- Chapter 85 - Yamamoto Genryusai's Considerations
As the words fell, a violent gust of wind swept through the training ground, transforming into a ferocious phenomenon that covered the area.
This technique was one of the few Tokikaze’s Shikai moves, and at the same time, it was the most developed one.
Everyone watched in horror upon seeing the scene,
As the blade descended, an endless raging wind tore through the layers of the training ground’s surface, rushing forward in a tornado-like manner.
Seeing this, Ichimaru Gin’s previously smiling expression instantly turned serious.
Before the Captain Proficiency Test, no one had ever told him that he would have to fight against such a monster.
Wasn’t this level of Shikai comparable to ordinary Bankai techniques?
Still with his previous posture, Ichimaru Gin attacked once again.
“Kamishini no Yari · Buto!”
Roaring flashes of light scattered, instantly forming a curtain of light covering the sky. The training ground seemed to be illuminated like a miniature sun, shining in all directions.
Countless exploding blade lights descended, merging into the surging wind.
In just an instant, the overwhelming wind was directly torn into fragments, its momentum faded away, leaving only a faint breeze drifting in the air.
Tokikaze nodded quite seriously. Kamishini no Yari was truly terrifying!
Unfortunately, this Zanpakuto had a certain drawback.
It was well known that the longer the weapon, the stronger it became.
But once Kamishini no Yari extended long enough, it would take some time to retract it, and it might even become a hindrance.
So, the moment Ichimaru Gin launched his attack, Tokikaze also used Shunpo, disappearing from the spot.
When he reappeared, he was already near Ichimaru Gin.
“Judging from Captain-Commander’s expression, it’s not difficult to see that he wants me to teach you a good lesson.”
Arashigane was raised high, with wind swirling around it. A fierce wind rose again on the flat ground, ruthlessly falling with an unparalleled force.
Clang!
Under the collision of immense force, the sound of iron and gold crossing each other seemed particularly muffled, as if a heavy hammer struck a giant drum.
In the instant the two Zanpakuto clashed, Ichimaru Gin instinctively opened his eyes wide, filled with disbelief.
This level of power…
Before he could react, Tokikaze unleashed a terrifying onslaught of wind and rain-like attacks, smoothly using countless sword techniques of various swordsmanship styles.
In an instant, Ichimaru Gin found himself suppressed and at a disadvantage.
On the high platform, Kaname Tosen’s eyes twitched, as if recalling some unpleasant memories.
On the other hand, Unohana Retsu looked towards the training ground with joyful eyes. Her hands were crossed in front of her as she softly murmured to himself, “What a delightful battle. A spar using bamboo swords is too restrained. If I can spar with Captain Tokikaze using Zanpakuto, I would have no complaint.”
It seemed like Yamamoto Genryusai heard Unohana Retsu’s comment, and the corners of his eyes twitched.
He was aware of the fact that Tokikaze often visited the Fourth Division barracks and sparred with Unohana Retsu.
Even the process of their battles was well known to him.
But from Unohana Retsu’s words, he discovered a worrisome thing.
It seemed like in through their exchange, Zaraki Kenpachi was gradually replacing by Tokikaze in Unohana Retsu’s heart.
This was not a good sign.
Once Unohana Retsu reverted to her past self, the Fourth Division would have to choose a new Captain.
Although this possibility was small, it was not impossible.
In the training ground, Ichimaru Gin struggled to support himself, completely at a disadvantage.
This overwhelming close-quarters combat truly made it hard to utilize his Shinso.
Until…
A hot Captain erupted from the high platform, as if molten magma was flowing on it.
“Let’s end the test here.”
Yamamoto Genryusai’s voice echoed throughout the training ground, “The performance of Vice-Captain Ichimaru Gin has already gained the approval of the Captains.”
The momentum of the battle came to a sudden stop.
Tokikaze sheathed his Zanpakuto and stood still, stopping in front of Ichimaru Gin. “You fought well, Captain Ichimaru.”
“It’s really terrifying.” Ichimaru Gin shuddered, “You didn’t give me a chance to use my Bankai again.”
“The training ground is too small, not suitable for Kamishini no Yari.”
Tokikaze reassured him, “If it were in a more spacious area, I might be overwhelmed.”
Heaven and earth could bear witness; he was speaking the truth.
If Kamishini no Yari was used for surprise attacks, even Tokikaze couldn’t defend against it at his current level.
The two exchanged insincere compliments for a few moments, then bid farewell with overly fake smiles.
With the Captain Proficiency Test concluded, the training ground had turned into ruins.
Both Ichimaru Gin and Tokikaze were skilled at destructive techniques, and if they fought in Seireitei, at least several barracks would have collapsed instantly.
The spectators outside the arena were left in awe, utterly astonished by the intensity of the battle. They couldn’t fathom the immense gap between the captains.
Even though Ichimaru Gin had unleashed his Bankai, Tokikaze had effortlessly suppressed him using only his Shikai.
From the spectators’ perspective, it seemed that if Captain-Commander Yamamoto Genryusai had not intervened to stop the fight, this future Captain of the Third Division might have met his end on the training ground.
“I’ve made up my mind; I must join the Ninth Division!”
“A wise choice! Captain Tokikaze’s strength is truly exceptional!”
“From now on, Captain Tokikaze is the goal I strive to surpass!”
After the initial shock wore off, the onlookers expressed their deep admiration for Tokikaze, pledging to follow his example or even challenge themselves to reach his level.
After the Captain Proficiency Test, the Captains went together to the First Division barracks for Ichimaru Gin’s inauguration ceremony.
Unlike Tokikaze’s hasty appointment, even before Yamamoto Genryusai announced the preparation for the Captain Proficiency Test, Tsujishiro Kyoraku already started preparing Ichimaru Gin’s Captain haori.
Watching the white figure in the center, Chikane Iba sighed as he walked behind Ichimaru Gin. Finally, the right person had come to take on the role of Captain.
She could now submit her application for a break to the First Division.
Yamamoto Genryusai, with a stern gaze, surveyed the Captains. He exchanged a few customary words, identical to those spoken when Tokikaze assumed the role of Captain, even maintaining the same pauses in his tone.
“The Captain’s inauguration ceremony concludes here.”
Yamamoto Genryusai’s tone eased slightly, “However, there is one more thing I need to inform you all, and I hope you Captains are prepared for it.”
“The Central 46 recently issued a new decree.”
Hearing this, Tokikaze frowned slightly, a vague sense of unease forming in his mind.
“The Third Seat of the Twelfth Division, Mayuri Kurotsuchi, has successfully completed the probation period.”
At this point, Yamamoto Genryusai paused for a moment, as if brewing his emotions. “Considering that the Twelfth Division has yet to find a suitable candidate for the position of Captain, I hereby recommend Mayuri Kurotsuchi to assume the role of the Twelfth Division’s Captain. Is there any objection?”
As the words fell, the faces of the Captains showed various expressions.
They were quite familiar with Mayuri Kurotsuchi.
A former prisoner of Nest of Maggots, currently the head of the Research and Development Institute, and the Third Seat of the Twelfth Division—an advanced researcher rarely seen in the Soul Society.
Simultaneously, one of the most unstable factors.
Anyone who was imprisoned in Nest of Maggots was not a good person.
If it weren’t for Kisuke Urahara, who once served as the Captain of the Second Division and single-handedly suppressed the entire Nest of Maggots, it would be impossible to take Mayuri Kurotsuchi out of there.
Currently, Mayuri Kurotsuchi seemed to be in a relatively subdued state.
But no one could predict what was going on in this guy’s mind and whether he would cause significant trouble in the Soul Society one day.
As the Captains contemplated, a voice echoed in the meeting room.
“I agree.”
All eyes turned towards Tokikaze.
He raised his hand, signaling his agreement. “Mayuri Kurotsuchi, as someone with intelligence second only to Kisuke Urahara, is fully qualified to be the Captain of the Twelfth Division.”
