- Chapter 38 - "Kid, I See Great Potential in You, Join My Ship
Since Mosen’s training plan changed, he would spar with Shuzo for two hours daily.
A few days had passed, and the recruits in the training camp had become accustomed to Mosen and Shuzo’s presence, no longer gathering to watch their battles.
No one wanted to miss their training sessions by watching Mosen and Shuzo fight.
Only Shuzo, who fought with Mosen daily, knew how fast this kid was improving.
From the first day, when Mosen could barely use Moonwalk occasionally, to the fifth day, when he had already mastered Soru and Moonwalk.
Even Kami-e could now be applied in battle.
Most impressive was Mosen’s rapidly increasing resilience. His proficiency in physical techniques and his body’s growth spurt greatly enhanced his physical attributes and stamina.
**Bang! Bang!**
Another punch from Shuzo sent Mosen flying, but he adjusted mid-air and landed smoothly as if nothing had happened.
Sparring with Mosen these days has been beneficial for Shuzo, but it has also been frustrating to see the kid improve so quickly.
Facing someone like Mosen could shake one’s confidence. Shuzo looked at Mosen with a complicated expression.
Luckily, Shuzo’s assistant reported: “Deputy Instructor Vice Admiral Dalmatian is in Instructor Zephyr’s office.”
Shuzo nodded and said to Mosen, “Kid, let’s call it a day. Follow me; I want you to meet an old friend.”
Mosen had already heard the assistant and knew that Dalmatian had arrived at the camp.
Dalmatian was one of the notable Vice Admirals in the anime, and Mosen had a good impression of him. He hadn’t been a Vice Admiral for long, but his combat power was likely still impressive, though not at the elite level yet.
Nevertheless, his swordsmanship was undoubtedly superior to Mosen’s. Those who reached the rank of Vice Admiral without a Devil Fruit ability had exceptional Haki, physical techniques, or swordsmanship.
Sparring with such a person would be highly beneficial.
—
In Zephyr’s office, Dalmatian sat in a guest chair, dressed in his trademark purple pinstriped suit.
His single ponytail lay alone atop his head, much like Shuzo’s, which explained their friendship.
Dalmatian’s moustache twitched as he spoke with Zephyr.
“Zephyr-sensei, it’s been a long time. You look even better than the last time I saw you.”
Zephyr smiled, apparently recalling something. “Dalmatian, while you were away from Headquarters, we’ve had a remarkable newcomer in the camp. His talent rivals even that of Kuzan and the others.”
“I’ve heard about a kid named Mosen. His name is all over Headquarters. Sensei, you’ve really nurtured another outstanding talent. Once he graduates, he’ll be a valuable asset in enforcing the Navy’s justice. The pirates nowadays are getting too bold.”
Zephyr waved his hand dismissively. He had trained many elite students, yet pirates kept emerging.
“Did you manage to capture those pirates you were after in the New World?”
“They’re in Impel Down now. Ever since Roger’s execution, pirates have been swarming the New World like crazy. I’ve captured countless ones, including some so-called ‘Supernovas,’ who are just full of themselves.”
Dalmatian’s frustration was evident. He had spent half a year chasing pirates in the New World, enduring countless hardships, but finally captured them before they could join Kaido’s crew.
Zephyr nodded in agreement. Pirates have always been numerous for various reasons.
They had hoped Roger’s execution would deter others, but his last words only spurred more people, including many ordinary folks, to set sail.
“No matter how many pirates there are, as long as the Navy can fight, we will bring them to justice.”
“Indeed, Sensei. The Navy’s justice will never allow these pirates to run rampant.”
**Knock, knock… knock, knock…**
“Come in!”
Shuzo and Mosen walked in, one behind the other.
“Sensei,” Shuzo greeted Zephyr before turning to Dalmatian. “Dalmatian, it’s been a long time. You’re still as meticulous as ever.”
“Shuzo, it seems you’re not doing too well in the camp. No new clothes?”
Despite his severe usual demeanour, the Dalmatian couldn’t help but joke with his old friend after half a year apart.
Shuzo casually removed his tattered shirt. Every spar with Mosen destroyed his clothes, much to his frustration.
Mosen’s shirt was already in shreds. The logistics officer, Elder Mo, had complained to them several times about it.
Mosen thought wistfully about the anime scenes where characters fought fiercely, yet their clothes remained intact. If only they had such garments.
Shuzo and Dalmatian bumped fists in greeting, then stepped aside to introduce Mosen.
“Dalmatian, this is our camp’s most outstanding elite recruit, Mosen.”
“You’re a master swordsman. It would be great if you could help Mosen with his swordsmanship.”
Dalmatian, similar in height to Shuzo but with a leaner, fair-skinned build, stood in stark contrast to his friend.
It was easy to see that he must have been quite charming in his youth, unlike the rugged Shuzo. Even now, Dalmatian has a distinctive appeal.
Dalmatian, also skilled in Haki, was immediately impressed by Mosen. Rayleigh had mentioned that Kenbunshoku Haki could sense an opponent’s strength, and Dalmatian felt the formidable presence of this strikingly handsome young man.
Moreover, the famous sword, Shigure, at Mosen’s waist and his sharp aura clearly indicated his advanced swordsmanship.
Such prodigies were rare.
“Mosen, would you be interested in joining my ship as a lieutenant after graduation? I assure you that we can explore and hone your swordsmanship together.
Dalmatian looked at Mosen expectantly.
If Mosen joined his fleet, his efficiency in capturing pirates would increase by 30%, allowing him to attempt previously unthinkable missions.
“Thank you, Vice Admiral Dalmatian, but I don’t have a say in where I go. After graduation, Fleet Admiral Sengoku will make the final assignments. However, if given a choice, I’d definitely choose your ship first.”
Mosen put on a look of longing yet helplessness, making Dalmatians like him even more.
He didn’t notice the mischievous expressions on Zephyr and Shuzo’s faces. If he had, he might have reconsidered his affection for Mosen.
Of course, Mosen was just acting.
He would not join the Dalmatian’s ship. His goal was Kuzan. Having Kuzan as a superior would mean a lot of freedom.
If that didn’t work, he’d go for Garp. The older man took frequent vacations.
Other officers would likely keep him busy, with no chance to slack off.
If Dalmatian knew he praised Mosen for his looks, Mosen might have even reconsidered.
