Dragon Ball Xenoverse - Chapter 4
Time passed quickly.
Pica slowly opened his eyes, clutching his wounds and saying, “Ugh, it hurts.”
Pica looked around and realized he was in an unfamiliar place, though it seemed somewhat familiar.
“(Finally, I can learn martial arts!) I will do my best.” Two slightly childish voices came from outside the window. Pica looked out and saw an old man with a giant turtle shell on his back, leading two children, one with fluffy hair and a tail, and the other a bald boy in what looked like a monk’s robe.
Pica raised an eyebrow, quickly recognizing who they were.
“There are no real martial arts! Actually, I have nothing left to teach you.”
“What? How can that be?” the children exclaimed.
“The basic essence of Turtle School martial arts is already included in your daily training. You may not realize it…” Master Roshi continued walking, “But your eyes, hands, feet, and entire body, even your mind, have been trained.”
Master Roshi paused, standing beside Goku and Krillin, saying, “Martial arts is about application, not just technique.”
Goku and Krillin stared at Master Roshi with wide eyes. Goku asked, “Grandpa, how can we win without any special moves?”
“The importance of martial arts is not to defeat others, but to surpass yourself. You should use the basics you’ve learned to create your own techniques,” Master Roshi explained.
“But… weren’t we supposed to win the World Martial Arts Tournament and become the champions?” Krillin asked.
“I never expected you to win the tournament. It’s to make you realize your limits and push you to improve,” Master Roshi said seriously. “In this last month before the tournament, I won’t teach you new techniques. Just continue your usual training, but there’s one thing…”
Goku and Krillin looked at each other and asked, “What is it?”
“Your turtle shells’ weight will double. Switch to these 40-kilogram shells,” Master Roshi said, placing a heavy shell on the ground, causing a small crater.
Is he Master Roshi? What he said is similar to Jeet Kune Do’s principles. Jeet Kune Do’s philosophy is “Using no way as way; having no limitation as limitation.” Master Roshi wants Goku and Krillin to create their own techniques from the basics they’ve learned.
Though often unreliable in the anime, Master Roshi is indeed a martial arts master, having trained strong fighters like Goku, Krillin, Tien, and Yamcha, and producing two powerful Dragon Ball warriors: Krillin, Earth’s strongest (excluding androids), and Super Saiyan Goku.
A thought flashed through Pica’s mind.
“Hello!” Pica greeted Master Roshi respectfully, “Are you Master Roshi?”
“Oh, young man, you’re awake. Yes, I’m the ‘God of Martial Arts’—Master Roshi.” Master Roshi stood with his hands on his hips, looking smug.
“Well then…” Pica bowed to Master Roshi, “Please teach me Turtle School martial arts, Master Roshi.”
Master Roshi shook his head, “Young man, it’s not that I don’t want to guide you, but I can sense your ki is tens of times stronger than mine. Why would someone as powerful as you need my guidance?”
“How can that be? Master Roshi, I have great energy but don’t know how to use it. I need a master to guide me.”
“Is that so? You were born with such strong energy… hmm…” Master Roshi looked puzzled, thinking.
“Alright, I’ll teach you how to control your ki,” Master Roshi said.
I hope this guy won’t do evil; otherwise, I’ll have to use all my strength to stop him, Master Roshi thought.
“Thank you, Master Roshi.” Pica was overjoyed, expecting Master Roshi to set a difficult challenge, but it was easier than he thought.
“Follow me.”
“Yes.”
Behind Master Roshi’s house, he said to Pica, “Sit down and calm your mind.”
“Yes, Master Roshi.” Pica sat cross-legged, calming his mind.
“Slowly, draw out the power within you, like this.” Master Roshi made a ball-holding gesture, gathering blue light between his hands.
“Haa!!” Master Roshi pushed the blue ball forward, sending it into the sea, creating huge waves.
“Guiding ki is like this. It may be difficult at first,” Master Roshi watched Pica gather a blue light in his hands, “Uh, cough, cough, you’re as talented as I was. I also mastered ki control easily. Uh, hahaha…”
I remember in the anime, you weren’t as strong as young Goku and just bragged and peeped at girls. When did you control ki so easily? Pica thought.
“Since you can guide ki, I have nothing more to teach you. If you control your ki well, you’ll surpass me quickly,” Master Roshi said seriously. “But if you have evil intentions and do bad things, I’ll stop you, even at the cost of my life.”
“Don’t worry, Master Roshi. I won’t do bad things,” Pica said respectfully.
“I recommend you visit a place called Korin Tower. There’s a cat sage who can help you train. I trained there before,” Master Roshi said.
Korin Tower, huh? Although Korin’s strength isn’t great, the Sacred Water is miraculous and should quickly improve my strength, Pica thought.
“Yes, Master Roshi. I’ll learn to control my ki well.”
“Good, I’ll go train Goku and Krillin now. By the way, Goku saved you,” Master Roshi said with a mysterious smile, glancing at Pica’s waist.
Pica followed Master Roshi’s gaze, smiled, and muttered, “Looks like I owe Goku.”
Pica said loudly, “Thank you, Master Roshi.” He jumped into the sea, swimming in the direction Master Roshi pointed.
Master Roshi watched him go, saying, “This young man will achieve great things…”
