In Marvel, People are Kamen Rider - Chapter 39
Five Asgardians joined the fray beside the armored Asgardian, and just their formation alone was enough to impose significant pressure on the scene.
The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents’ expressions grew grim, yet they were not completely despairing. Even split into two squads, their firepower was more than capable of handling eight Asgardians.
“Maintain formation, fire!”
“Garrett, Clint, there are six Asgardians in the main corridor of Laboratory C. We need backup!” Melinda May led the S.H.I.E.L.D. team, keeping formation and shooting while calling for support from Clint Barton and Garrett.
Meanwhile, Natasha Romanoff bypassed one of the labs to find a better firing line.
“Interesting, human weapons are becoming more formidable!” The recently arrived Asgardians were momentarily disorganized as armor-piercing rounds struck them.
Their skin was penetrated, and bullets exploded within their tissue—a sensation far from pleasant.
They had initially intended to sweep through the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents with an invincible stance, highlighting the gap between humans and Asgardians before killing them all.
“It seems we need to get serious now!” An Asgardian resembling an owl murmured, then opened his mouth.
He emitted a large cloud of black mist from his mouth.
The black mist spread rapidly along the corridor, reaching the agents in a blink.
Upon inhaling the black mist, the two agents at the front felt suffocating, dizzy, and stumbling to the ground.
“This mist is toxic. Put on your gas masks!” Melinda immediately took off her gas mask and put it on.
The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents were well-prepared for such sudden situations.
But the black mist not only carried toxins, it also wholly obscured their vision.
The corridor was filled with dense black mist, thick and unyielding, making it impossible to discern the situation inside.
“Don’t stop. Keep firing!” Melinda didn’t stop pulling the trigger, her firearm continuously spewing flames.
However, within the black smoke, all the Asgardians had vanished; shooting yielded no response.
“Something’s wrong, we need to retreat!” Melinda immediately issued the order to retreat, pointing in a direction. Behind her, Fitz and Simmons hurriedly ran towards the rear corridor.
But just as they were running, the ceiling above suddenly cracked open.
Two figures broke through the ceiling and blocked their way.
“I’ve got this!” Concerned about the newcomers’ safety, Melinda quickly slid forward, her long legs kicking fiercely against the chest of the snail-like Asgardian, pushing him back repeatedly.
Following that, she beautifully flipped to land, her gun already aimed at another obstructing Asgardian, a fern-like Asgardian.
Her bullets pushed the fern-like Asgardian back into a corner, revealing a passage.
“Move!” Melinda shouted at the stunned Fitz and Simmons.
The newcomers quickly responded, rushing forward during the brief opening.
“You’re excellent, and we’ll give you a chance to take your own life so you can become a powerful Asgardian!” The fern-like Asgardian and the snail-like Asgardian stood up, looking at Melinda with admiration:
“Do it yourself! The Asgardian born from you will be more powerful than one born after we kill you!”
“Are you saying that an Asgardian born from being killed by an Asgardian is weaker than one who dies on their own?” Melinda noticed the underlying message from the two Asgardians.
“Exactly! A naturally born Asgardian is far more formidable than one who has transformed!” The two Asgardians nodded and smiled:
“We need strong allies, and that’s why we infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D.! S.H.I.E.L.D. is Earth’s most elite organization. By transforming all of you, we would gain the strongest comrades. We will eventually rule humans!”
“So that was your plan!” Melinda May realized suddenly.
The rest of the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents also understood through her smartwatch and felt a chill of dread.
If it weren’t for this check-up exposing the presence of these Asgardians, had these Asgardians gradually infiltrated the core layers of S.H.I.E.L.D., then S.H.I.E.L.D. would have become accomplices in the Asgardians’ tyranny.
“What do you say, Agent Melinda? Your name as the ‘Iron Rider’ is widely known among the recruits. We respect you. Would you consider sacrificing yourself for the evolution of humanity?” The fern-like Asgardian spoke with refined grace.
“Well, of course… I would not!!” A glint flashed in Melinda’s eyes, and her rifle fired again.
The two Asgardians sidestepped, and a new gunfire came at them.
Under the barrage of gunfire, the snail-like Asgardian and the fern-like Asgardian were driven into a corner.
“Clint and Garrett have arrived in Zone B; we must hold on.”
Natasha appeared by Melinda’s side from a side route.
“I’m still worried, though. There are only six Asgardians here. Where are the other two?”
Melinda’s brows furrowed in concern.
She and Natasha had cornered the fern-like and snail-like Asgardians while their team held back the owl-like Asgardian and four others. Yet, two Asgardians had not shown themselves and were hiding somewhere.
“I don’t know! Let’s catch these six first and see if we can extract that information from them!”
Natasha and Melinda took turns reloading, keeping the fern-like and snail-like Asgardians cornered and immobilized.
They had probably a dozen kilograms of ammunition on them.
“Bad news, Agent Melinda, Agent Natasha, the four Asgardians in front have disappeared!”
Just then, a team member from the side reported more troubling news.
“What?”
Melinda and Natasha turned to look, only to see that the black mist in the corridor had dissipated, but the whereabouts of the owl-like Asgardian and others were unknown.
“What exactly are they planning?”
Natasha and Melinda exchanged looks, each seeing the seriousness in the other’s eyes.
The fern-like and snail-like Asgardians had been abandoned as pawns.
So, what were these Asgardians really up to?
“Natasha!”
“Mel!”
As Natasha and Melinda pondered, Clint and Garrett had arrived with their squad.
The previously escaped recruits like Fitz and Simmons were also safely gathered.
Moreover, they had taken in the remaining recruits, ensuring the newcomers’ safety.
“Is it just these two? Where are the rest?”
Garrett looked at the two Asgardians lying on the ground, unable to hide his anxiety.
It wasn’t surprising that he was so worried, as these eight newcomers were originally undercover Hydra agents who had mysteriously become Asgardians.
