- Chapter 60 - The Strong Woman Who Jumped Off The Building
“Freeze!”
Arriving at the school entrance, Cyclops, having custom-modified a Harley-Davidson motorcycle for him, pulled it from his pocket, dispelled the shrinking spell, and Hawking accelerated towards downtown.
Though Professor X had not given Hawking much money, he ensured Hawking had everything he needed.
Hawking had mentioned that borrowing Cyclops’s motorcycle was inconvenient, so Professor X immediately sent a new one and had Cyclops modify it.
Professor X would provide money immediately if Hawking needed it, though more significant amounts required justification.
Because in Professor X’s eyes, Hawking was still a kid, and he worried that too much money might lead him to lose himself in the city and go astray.
Speeding along, Hawking quickly reached Queens.
But he wasn’t headed to OsCorp Tower, but to Queens Hospital.
He planned to verify whether Peter’s classmate Jessica was indeed Jessica Jones before heading to OsCorp to talk to the Green Goblin.
“Hi, beautiful. Please tell me which room Jessica Campbell is in.
Pulling out a coin and magically transforming it into a rose, Hawking flashed a smile and handed it to the reception nurse.
Initially busy and somewhat impatient, the nurse’s attitude changed utterly upon seeing Hawking’s handsome face and the rose in his hand.
“Handsome, let me check for you.”
After receiving the rose, the nurse quickly blinked and gave Jessica’s room number.
Not everything needed a soul-stealing spell; good looks, physique, money, humor, and romance can sometimes be their kind of magic.
Waving goodbye to the nurse, Hawking found Jessica’s room number, but the black-haired girl was not there.
“It’s so sad. I heard her parents and brother died in the accident, and she’s the only survivor.”
“Yes, and she has no relatives left. She’ll have to be adopted by someone now.”
“Where did Jessica go?”
“Dr. Strange, she’s probably on the rooftop again. She’s been there to clear her mind every day since she woke up.”
“Tell her not to wander off when she returns; I need to check her recovery later.”
Although Hawking didn’t find Jessica in her room, he gathered enough information from nearby patients and doctors.
He quickly headed to the hospital rooftop.
“This kid, she isn’t thinking of jumping, is she?”
As he reached the rooftop, he saw Jessica standing on the edge, closing her eyes and stepping off.
Indeed, she was attempting to end her life.
A weekend ago, their family was happily headed to Disneyland, but on the way, Jessica and her brother argued over the next ride, distracting their father and causing an accident.
When she awoke, she found out her parents and brother had died in the crash, and she miraculously survived.
Now, blaming herself for their deaths, thinking if she hadn’t argued, the accident might not have happened.
Without her family and overwhelmed by guilt, she decided to end her life.
But she was afraid of heights; each time she tried to jump, she was scared back.
However, she had resolved to jump today, so she closed her eyes and stepped off the rooftop.
“Why don’t I feel like I’m falling?”
After stepping off, expecting to fall and die, she felt as though she was still in place, not falling.
“Did I miscalculate and not step far enough?”
Quietly opening her eyes, Jessica slowly looked down.
But the next second, her eyes showed a skeptical look.
“Leviosa!”
Because she found herself indeed in mid-air, feet dangling, yet not falling as usual, completely defying the laws of physics and floating in the air.
“Wow, I’m dizzy!”
After regaining her composure, the vertigo from her fear of heights immediately set in, and her ability to float in mid-air disappeared due to panic, causing her to plummet downward.
“Ah… Help!”
Instinctively, she cried out for help.
Fortunately, a firm hand suddenly appeared, grabbed her hospital gown, and pulled her back onto the rooftop.
“Long time no see, Miss Jessica!”
Hawking put Jessica down, bent over, and smiled at her.
By now, he was sure that this Jessica Campbell was indeed the Jessica Jones he remembered, likely having changed her name later.
He had just witnessed Jessica’s flight abilities, though it seemed she had just awakened.
“It’s been a while… thank you for saving me.”
A bit shaky on her legs, Jessica tried to calm her racing heart and recognized the boy who had saved her, quickly expressing her gratitude to Hawking.
Hawking then extended a hand:
“It seems you’re not feeling great. How about we grab something to eat? My treat!”
Jessica looked at Hawking, glanced outside the rooftop, and finally took his hand and stood up.
After the ordeal she just went through, she no longer wanted to die today. She felt she should find another way; jumping from heights was too frightening for her fear of heights.
“You can’t leave the hospital dressed like that.”
Pointing at Jessica’s hospital gown, it instantly transformed into a jacket and jeans.
This magical transformation stunned Jessica on the spot.
“Don’t be surprised; it’s a special ability, just like how you were floating in the air just now.”
Waving at Jessica to follow him, Hawking walked towards the staircase from the rooftop.
After a few seconds of shock, Jessica hurriedly followed him, slamming the iron door to the rooftop as she entered the stairwell.
“Bang!”
A loud noise echoed as the door, propelled by a tremendous force, flew towards Hawking.
Quickly reacting, Hawking turned around and caught the flying door.
“Expletive!”
Jessica looked at her hands incredulously and then at Hawking, unable to hold back a curse.
Hawking set the door aside and joked:
“It looks like you’ll need to be careful with your strength, or someone might end up seriously hurt, like if that door had hit them just now.”
“You… who exactly are you? And what’s happening to me?”
Looking at Hawking’s five unmistakable fingerprints on the iron door set aside, Jessica finally couldn’t help but ask.
Hawking replied:
“I think it’s better if we sit down, have some food, and talk this through.”
“I want a burger.”
“No problem.”
