Marvel: Randomly Load a Protagonist Template - Chapter 87
An hour later, in the principal’s office of the mutant school.
Professor X looked at Hawking, a look of surprise on his face.
“Hawking, weren’t you on holiday at home? Why have you come back so suddenly?”
“Professor, I have something important to tell you,” Hawking said with a severe expression.
Professor X, hearing this, also stopped smiling. Knowing Hawking’s steady nature, if he said it was necessary, it certainly wasn’t a trivial matter.
“Go ahead.”
“Last night, Magneto came to see me. He wants me to collaborate to destroy S.H.I.E.L.D. because he discovered…”
Hawking told Professor X everything about his conversation with Magneto the previous night, but he did not mention his action of sending a shadow clone to infiltrate S.H.I.E.L.D. today.
He only planned to tell people about the shadow clone technique if necessary.
This way, as long as no one knows about this technique, he can use the shadow clone to impersonate various identities and do things his current identity wouldn’t allow.
For example, if one day he needs to assassinate the president, the chairman of the Avengers Corporation Hawking, the superhero Hawking, and the X-Men Hawking couldn’t do it, but his shadow clone could change its appearance and carry out the task.
Even if exposed, the clone would simply vanish into smoke, leaving no trace back to him.
After hearing Hawking’s account, Professor X sighed:
“My old friend really can’t stay out of trouble. But Hawking, you don’t need to worry about those drugs and weapons from S.H.I.E.L.D.”
“Professor?”
Hawking noticed that Professor X wasn’t amazed by the drugs and weapons that S.H.I.E.L.D. was researching.
Professor X explained with a smile:
“A few days ago, Nick Fury talked to me about it and informed me of their development of these drugs and weapons. He holds no hostility towards us and has promised he won’t use them if we don’t initiate trouble.
His main concern is to prepare for Erik, whose actions have been increasingly frequent in recent years, causing him unease.
Of course, I know not everything he says is entirely trustworthy, but some things can be believed.”
He knew what kind of person Nick Fury was. Fury’s words were also a hope that if Magneto started a war, Hawking and he would stand with S.H.I.E.L.D., or at least remain neutral.
If Nick Fury had enough power, he probably wouldn’t mind doing exactly as Erik suggested, and this was all too clear to him.
But what of it? For now, he just hoped to maintain the status quo as long as Hawking’s Avengers Initiative succeeded and the public grew more accepting of mutants.
In the future, even Nick Fury couldn’t openly act against them.
“Nick Fury, that cunning old fox, seems to have played his cards well.”
Hearing Professor X’s explanation, Hawking also raised an eyebrow. He naturally thought of what Professor X had considered.
To be the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and to have developed it into the world’s largest organization, Nick Fury had more than just arrogance and a desire to control; his capabilities and strategies were also extraordinary.
“Yes, so as long as we stay put, those two won’t find it easy to start fighting.
I’ve already warned Nick Fury. If he attacks the Brotherhood of Mutants, then we’ll side with the Brotherhood.
You should also respond to Erik tomorrow. If he attacks S.H.I.E.L.D., then we’ll side with S.H.I.E.L.D.,” Professor X told Hawking.
“Okay, I understand,” Hawking nodded, thinking this was indeed a good plan, at least allowing them to stabilize the situation for a while longer.
The next day, at the same coffee shop.
“Hawking, have you decided? I don’t think you want to be caught by S.H.I.E.L.D. one day, leashed like a dog, kept in a lab every day as their experimental rat, or manipulated into becoming their executioner. Even if you think you are strong enough, remember that you have a sister and a brother who are less powerful than you. Join me, and let’s destroy S.H.I.E.L.D. together. Once it’s done, Charles won’t have much to say to you.”
At their meeting, Magneto didn’t beat around the bush but went straight into trying to persuade him.
Hawking, however, calmly sipped his coffee and replied leisurely:
“A week ago, Nick Fury had already sought out the Professor individually and informed him about the drugs and weapons. They do not intend to wage war against mutants. So, I’m sorry, Erik, but I cannot accept your request. Also, the Professor asked me to tell you that if you initiate a war, he will have to side with S.H.I.E.L.D.”
“He went to Charles first, good… very good!” Magneto first paused, then his face twisted into an ugly smile upon hearing Hawking’s response.
Hawking added:
“However, that’s just the Professor’s point of view. If you, Mr. Erik, have some powerful ace up your sleeve that makes me feel it’s enough to take on S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Professor’s X-Men, I suggest collaborating with you to erase S.H.I.E.L.D. from this world completely. I don’t like to take risks, nor do I like to fight uncertain battles.”
He didn’t want Magneto to think he was fully aligned with the Professor, so if Magneto was plotting something, he might get wind of it beforehand and not be caught off guard.
Magneto looked at Hawking, fell silent for about five seconds, and finally laughed:
“I understand. If that day comes, I’ll be the first to seek your cooperation.”
After that, he left the coffee shop with Mystique.
Watching the backs of Magneto and Mystique as they left, Hawking muttered:
“I always feel that this old guy is up to something.”
His intuition told him that Magneto wouldn’t let it go so quickly.
But after thinking it over, it didn’t matter. He didn’t want the current peace to be disturbed, but if it were broken, he would take the opportunity to shake things up, show off his strength, and let all powers know that Hawking is not to be trifled with.
At the same time, it would also be an opportunity to once again promote the banner of the Avengers International Corporation with Spider-Man and others.
If the event’s impact is significant enough, he might gain a wave of goodwill, which wouldn’t be a bad deal.
So, after some thought, he decided not to delve deeper.
Meanwhile, as Mystique drove, she turned to Magneto and asked:
“Why didn’t you reveal some of our plans to him now? We could have brought him over to our side.
“Don’t be fooled by that cunning fox. What he said might not be true, and he might just be trying to extract information. We can’t risk telling him our plans. Since he’s unwilling to join us, he shouldn’t blame me for being ruthless when the time comes.”
A flash of murderous intent appeared in Magneto’s eyes.
