Marvel: Randomly Load a Protagonist Template - Chapter 90
It seemed Nick Fury still noticed Hawking’s confusion and explained:
“This time, I want to trap and eliminate some moles within S.H.I.E.L.D., so I’ve intentionally sent everyone else away.
Your professors and teachers are all at the school, also under enemy surveillance. Leaving even one of them might spook the enemy.
Only you are different. I’ve never entered your information into S.H.I.E.L.D.’s system, and since the students are currently on break, your departure from the school would seem normal.”
Ever since the incident where Strucker was poisoned, Fury has been secretly investigating his own organization, S.H.I.E.L.D.
No infiltration is perfect; there are always flaws, especially since the spy that was caught came from the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy, which gave him a breakthrough and led him to some unbelievable truths.
But since he lacks sufficient evidence, he hasn’t been fully confident in his findings.
He has also hidden some of the information that could be concealed, no longer entering it into S.H.I.E.L.D.’s system.
Hawking’s data is among these hidden records.
In S.H.I.E.L.D.’s system, the information on Hawking still dates back to the data collected during that battle. Afterwards, he has been living like a normal mutant student at school, going on breaks.
The fact that he left school six months ago to fight crime and help establish the Avengers International Corporation isn’t recorded in S.H.I.E.L.D.’s system either.
Of course, he couldn’t hide major activities like researching drugs and weapons to suppress mutants; hiding such significant operations would raise suspicion.
This is also why, despite having drugs and weapons against mutants, he has never initiated any actions with them.
Now, with major problems existing within S.H.I.E.L.D., mentioning others is even less possible.
That’s why he disclosed the research on mutant drugs and weapons to Professor X, aiming to maintain stability.
He just didn’t expect that before he could deal with the internal moles, they somehow got wind of his plans and decided to take his life first.
Conveniently, he saw this as an opportunity to perhaps finally clear out these moles.
However, he was also prepared for Hawking to refuse. If Hawking were to decline, he had second and third backup plans, although these plans might involve significant losses.
“Internal moles within S.H.I.E.L.D., Hydra?”
Hearing Nick Fury’s explanation, Hawking remained composed on the surface, but was quite shocked internally.
He hadn’t expected Nick Fury to have detected Hydra’s presence so many years in advance, and even knew that Hydra was planning to assassinate him.
It seems there are many differences between universes, and one must not take them lightly.
In fact, Hawking didn’t know that it was his very presence that allowed Nick Fury to detect Hydra early.
Without Hawking, Strucker might have escaped, there wouldn’t have been a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent mistaken for a Hydra operative, Fury wouldn’t have become suspicious, and Mystique wouldn’t have delivered information to Hydra.
This universe and the primary universe have many differences, but the gaps are not huge. However, Hawking’s presence has led to many significant deviations.
And things were getting more and more skewed.
“Alright, I’ll help you out. With me there, you won’t die tomorrow.”
Hawking made an ‘OK’ gesture with his hand.
To him, Hydra was hardly a threat worth worrying about.
Moreover, the internal strife between S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra seemed beneficial in some ways, as Hydra was far larger than Nick Fury currently realized.
Alexander Pierce, who controlled the S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, was just one branch of it.
Even if they eliminated Pierce’s branch and wiped out all Hydra agents within S.H.I.E.L.D., the organization would be severely weakened and would still need to track down the other Hydra factions. It was likely that neither organization would have the resources to bother him and the mutant school in the coming years.
The next day, the snow stopped, the sun rose, and it was a warm, sunny day.
Nick Fury drove his custom black SUV out of a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. base in Manhattan, preparing to cross several streets to leave the urban area and head to another base in the suburbs to catch a plane out of New York.
On a rooftop of a twenty-something story building nearby, Peter Parker in his Spider-Man suit was watching Fury’s car and asked Hawking beside him:
“Captain, you suddenly gathered us here just to protect him? Who is he?”
Originally, Hawking had given them two weeks off for Christmas, so they didn’t need to come together to fight crime or shoot commercials. They were just supposed to handle any criminals that appeared nearby.
But last night, Hawking suddenly called them to gather here early this morning and told them they needed to protect the one-eyed bald man below.
So naturally, they were also curious about who this one-eyed bald man was that required so many of them to protect.
“He’s the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., a guy who thinks he’s smart and likes to trick people into doing his bidding for free. When you see him, stay away and don’t believe a word he says.
I brought you here today mainly to train you. The people coming to kill this guy are among the elite of humanity, and it’s very likely they’ve been injected with a serum that enhances their physical abilities,” explained Hawking.
Usually, the toughest enemies Peter and his team faced were armed gang members and robbers, who were no match for them and didn’t offer much of a training opportunity.
But the Hydra agents coming to kill Nick Fury were different.
They were definitely among the most dangerous agents, perhaps even injected with Hydra-developed serums to enhance their abilities. It was a good opportunity for Peter and the others to gain real combat experience.
“So, you mean the ones coming to kill the one-eyed man below are all bad guys? Since they are bad, can I eat their brains?” Eddie’s Venom, full of anticipation, popped his head out and asked.
“You want to eat human brains again, that’s just disgusting!” Eddie couldn’t help but comment.
Venom immediately expressed his dissatisfaction:
“With you, I have to eat chicken brains every day, and they taste terrible. I want to eat those bad guys’ brains!”
“Alright, today is a special case, I’ll allow it, but remember, don’t eat too much,” Hawking thought for a moment and agreed to Venom’s request.
He couldn’t be too harsh.
“It looks like it’s starting!”
Jessica, who had been monitoring with a telescope, suddenly shouted.
Hawking looked down just in time to see Nick Fury’s car being rammed at an intersection.
Then several vehicles disguised as police cars, driven by Hydra agents, quickly moved in, blocking Fury’s car from all sides, making it impossible for him to move.
“Go ahead, don’t rush to save him, let him struggle a bit before you step in.”
He promised not to let Nick Fury be killed, but he didn’t say he wouldn’t let him suffer a bit.
