- Chapter 55 - For Those Who Carry The Wood For All, They Must Not Perish In The Wind And Snow
Qi Yun fell silent after learning the entire history of the Energy Tower. This world was incredibly deficient in energy acquisition, and its intelligent beings seemed to lack wisdom. They weren’t weak in combat but foolishly one-upping each other in stupidity.
“Hello.” Just then, Qi Yun suddenly spoke from behind Deer Brother.
Deer Brother jumped, spinning around instinctively into a defensive stance.
His first sight was Qi Yun’s lightly clothed figure.
“How can you wear so little? Is your clothing damaged? We have spares; let me get you one,” Deer Brother said quickly.
This was a habit of the people in this world, as the cold weather made them minimize any actions that might lose heat.
“No need to bother,” Qi Yun said, pleased with the man’s initial reaction, and gestured with his hand.
A yellow barrier began to spread around him, enveloping Deer Brother.
Instantly, a warm sensation enveloped Deer Brother, and the rapid temperature rise left him stunned.
“What… what is this!” Deer Brother asked cautiously, his eyes following the expanding barrier.
“Oh, it’s just a simple warming spell,” Qi Yun explained.
“A spell? Are you a wizard?” Deer Brother was even more surprised. Having lived in this post-apocalyptic world for so long, he had never encountered someone with special abilities.
“You could say that,” Qi Yun nodded. “Also, there’s no need to look for survivors anymore. I’ve already checked this city after I arrived; there are no other living people here.”
“Then, those graves…” Deer Brother still held a sliver of hope that the survivors had left before Qi Yun arrived.
“I dug those graves,” Qi Yun explained. “Leaving their bodies exposed to the wilderness is not my style.”
“I see…” Deer Brother was saddened for a few seconds but quickly regained his spirit. Death and sacrifice were all too common sights, no longer enough to shake his resolve.
“Um, I’m embarrassed to ask, but could you teach me that spell?” Deer Brother continued. Their struggle for survival would be much easier if the spell could be spread.
“No,” Qi Yun shook his head. Then, seeing Deer Brother’s disappointed face, he continued, “However, I can allow you to learn.”
“Really?!” Deer Brother’s expression shifted from disappointment to joy.
“Yes.” Qi Yun produced a golden ticket. “If you want to change the current state, even the world, just open this.”
Deer Brother took the ticket and looked up to say something but found that Qi Yun had already disappeared, leaving behind a message.
“My spell will continue to affect you for ten hours; I think that should be enough time for you to decide.”
Maintaining the spell for Deer Brother was Qi Yun’s reward for him because those who gather wood for everyone should not be allowed to perish in the wind and snow.
Deer Brother cautiously tested his surroundings and found it still warm.
Based on the melting state of the snow on the ground, Deer Brother realized that the spell’s effect extended to a hemisphere with a fifty-meter radius centered on him.
The range was impressive; maintaining a habitable temperature in this area using coal would be enormously consuming.
After confirming that he was not dreaming, Deer Brother carefully placed the ticket in his innermost pocket, then tied several knots in his clothing to ensure the ticket wouldn’t be lost even if he died.
Having done all this, Deer Brother turned and started looking for his teammates.
“Everyone! Stop what you’re doing and gather here!” Deer Brother shouted from a high spot.
Hearing his command, everyone acted without hesitation.
“Captain, what happened?” a team member said as he passed through the warm and cold barriers. The person paused, then stepped back and forth over the barrier boundary.
“What! What’s going on!” the team member exclaimed in surprise.
“Don’t rush; come here first. I’ll explain once everyone is here,” Deer Brother waved at him.
Ten minutes later, all the team members were within Deer Brother’s fifty-meter radius, and he explained everything that had just happened.
“You met a wizard? And he promised you a chance to learn a spell?!” the team member said, his face showing a mix of confusion and disbelief.
“Honestly, if it weren’t for the spell around us, I might think you’ve frozen your brain,” another person added.
“It would be great if this spell could last forever,” a man pulling a sled sighed.
“There will be a chance,” Deer Brother said with a profound expression. “Once we learn this spell and spread it, we can return to our original warm world!”
“Then open that ticket, captain! Don’t let it expire!” a team member urged eagerly.
“No,” Deer Brother shook his head. “I was never good at studying. If I fail to learn the spell because of my lack of intelligence, it
It would waste the best opportunity. So now we must hurry back to the base and let the leader select the smartest among us!”
“No problem! With this temperature, I’m confident we can return in five hours!” the team member said.
The warm environment melted snow under their feet, forming a solid path. Although slippery, it was still much faster than walking through thigh-deep snow.
“Alright, that’s decided then. Let’s secure our collected supplies and prepare to head home!” Deer Brother commanded.
With the effects of Qi Yun’s spell, traveling across the vast ice field was easier than anticipated.
The biting cold winds were completely blocked out, and the spell even identified unsafe areas to tread on by melting the ice. The melted water served as their best scout.
Since the onset of the apocalypse, this was the easiest journey Deer Brother and his team had ever made.
Under these circumstances, everyone’s morale was boosted, and their movement speed was astonishingly fast; they covered most of the distance in just three hours.
Deer Brother observed the warm red light in the distance as dusk fell and sighed in relief.
The ice field at night was more dangerous than in the morning, with many carnivorous animals active after dark, so their hunting was mainly done at night.
Normally, danger was just another part of life in this world.
But now, they carried with them a hope, a hope that could change the world.
If this hope were to be destroyed by some wild beasts, Deer Brother would never forgive himself.
