Marvel Saiyans - Chapter 39
“Roar!”
This was a massive cougar, its body reaching the limits for its species at over two hundred centimeters long with a shoulder height of eighty centimeters. Beneath its sleek, gray fur lay muscles as fluid as running water. At this moment, its long tail swayed as its muscles tensed and relaxed, continuously emitting intimidating roars.
It was bluffing, still not realizing how it had been captured.
Riding on the Flying Nimbus, Broly circled the desert several times before finding this king among cougars. He had placed it into a large pit created by blasting it with energy.
“Kakarot, jump in yourself. If you’re killed, it just means that’s the limit of your potential,” he said.
He had been training Kakarot for fifteen days, and it was time for a phase test. The intensive training had unearthed Kakarot’s potential; as long as she wasn’t crippled by fear, the cougar definitely wouldn’t be able to threaten her life.
Saiyans, though known as a warrior race, are more so because they gain strength exponentially after near-death experiences, not because of the strength they inherently possess. Without the protagonist’s luck, it’s easy for them to simply die instead of being miraculously saved after a close call. Akira Toriyama only named them a warrior race, not the most vital warrior race.
The average strength of Saiyans isn’t high. Raditz may seem weak, but she is considered a genius warrior among Saiyans.
The plethora of Super Saiyans that appear in the later parts of the manga gives the illusion that all Saiyans are incredibly strong. In reality, under Lord Frieza, the Ginyu Force, Dodoria, and Zarbon looked down on Saiyans. The Saiyans’ status under Frieza was meager.
Even the genius Saiyan warrior Vegeta, before his power boost during the Earth saga, was no match for them.
Lord Frieza chose to destroy the Saiyans not because of their strength but because of the seemingly far-fetched legend of the Super Saiyan.
In an interview with Akira Toriyama, he described the social structure of the Saiyans. After birth, infants are immediately tested for their power level. If the number exceeds the standard, they are considered candidates for combat training. If their power level does not increase after a certain period, they become technicians or are sent to conquer a planet in a spaceship.
Only those who grow strong enough to conquer planets can return to their homeland as lower-class warriors. The term “lower-class warrior” may not sound prestigious, but it already places them among the ruling class of Saiyans.
Only those who continuously improve their combat skills during childhood are considered upper-class warriors.
Raditz was one of the rare geniuses immediately judged as an upper-class warrior. As an official combatant, he was assigned to a squad under the renowned Nappa, participating in battles and plundering planets from a young age. Prince Vegeta, on the other hand, was the last to join the squad. Due to his powerful combat abilities and princely status, he directly replaced Nappa as the team leader.
The average combat power of Saiyans isn’t high. As interstellar pirates, they are more adept at bullying the weak and plundering ordinary planets, yet they cringe before the much stronger Lord Frieza. In this environment, few Saiyans fight to a near-death state to enhance their combat power.
Raditz had reached the ceiling of what an ordinary Saiyan could achieve. If Kakarot was left to grow untamed, she might not even match up to Raditz.
When Kakarot saw the cougar continuously roaring in the pit, she let out a childish roar and jumped in.
The cougar was initially startled by the human, who suddenly leaped in, quickly backed off, and then started circling to probe. Kakarot assumed a Mephisto-style starting position, continuously adjusting her stance while facing the cougar with a baby-faced, serious expression.
After a two to three-minute standoff, the beastly cougar finally decided to attack.
In its experience, human juveniles are very weak and could be killed with one bite. The cougar’s attack relied on strong shoulder muscles to pull prey in front of it and then use its teeth to tear arteries and kill. Its agile body, strong power, and lethal bite force made it a top American predator.
Kakarot remained calm, blocked the cougar’s forepaws with a backhand, and then kicked its lower jaw.
This kick sent the cougar flying into the pit wall.
The cougar whimpered, quickly stood up, and warily watched Kakarot. It realized that this human was not simple.
But beasts are simple in deception and lack intelligence, making the cougar’s attack methods relatively straightforward—aside from pawing, it only had biting left.
After Kakarot saw through its limited tactics, it wasn’t long before she pinned the large cat down, rendering it immobile.
Kakarot grasped the big cat’s neck and straddled it. Soon, the cougar emitted pleading whimpers.
The strong force on its neck was almost suffocating it.
Kakarot hesitated for a moment and then let go. The released cougar greedily gasped for air, somewhat submissively lolling its tongue and wagging its tail, looking like a large domestic cat.
“Hey, Broly, how about we don’t eat it?”
Kakarot, still a child, was immediately charmed by the cougar’s adorable behavior and looked up to ask Broly above.
Broly was surprised by Kakarot’s progress; he had thought she would struggle more with the cougar, but she handled it efficiently. Now, in hand-to-hand combat, she could probably take on two Wades. She could handle five Wades without trouble if she mastered the Mephisto technique of focusing energy in her fists.
He had already decided to catch some brown bears or lions to serve as Kakarot’s next opponents.
“Sure, as long as you take responsibility for its food,” Broly said. “Be careful; don’t let this beast bite your throat at night.”
This cougar’s wild nature was untamed, only temporarily submissive to Kakarot’s strength. It was believed it wouldn’t be long before it turned hostile or escaped.
“No, right, Bigu?”
Kakarot had already picked a name for the cougar.
Holding Kakarot with one hand and the cougar with the other, Broly leaped out of the pit. His powerful aura made Bigu tremble, almost causing it to defecate.
He found that because of her gender, Kakarot, although still very belligerent and rough, lacked the male Saiyan’s typical cunning and bloodlust. This should be considered a plus. At least it made her much more straightforward to raise.
