Marvel Saiyans - Chapter 84
Tessa Eagle stared at Peter Parker, her face full of curiosity.
Just last week, Peter was the typical nerd: nearsighted, frail, and awkward, often bullied at school. But over the weekend, he changed. He ditched his nerdy glasses, and his eyes no longer showed fear but were filled with confidence.
“You know, being possessed by a demon might give you powerful abilities temporarily, but soon, the demon will drain all your vitality, leaving only an empty shell!”
Peter Parker was confused. He had only been bitten by a spider, which resulted in his body merging with spider genes, granting him extraordinary strength, balance, and reflexes.
This was the result of his father’s research, having nothing to do with demons.
“No, no, I’m fine, Tessa. There’s nothing wrong with me.”
Peter took two steps back, realizing that the popular girl might have a screw loose.
“Hi, Parker, Tessa. So, here you are. I didn’t realize you two were so close,” said a fashionable girl, equally attractive as Tessa, holding a stack of books. She was Gwen Stacy, the daughter of the NYPD commissioner.
“Gwen! Parker is possessed by a demon!”
Tessa quickly grabbed Gwen’s arm, pulling her away from Peter.
“Parker! You don’t need to be afraid. I know a great exorcist who can help you!”
Gwen Stacy’s face was peculiar. She and Tessa both interned at Oscorp, where Gwen was highly valued by Dr. Connors, who led all the interns. During their time together, she thoroughly understood Tessa’s quirky personality.
Tessa, the girl from Texas, was obsessed with Eastern mythology and believed in it wholeheartedly, often unable to stop talking about it.
Peter Parker clutched his head in frustration. He had long been infatuated with Gwen Stacy and didn’t want this bizarre situation to drive them apart.
“Come with me. I’ll explain everything!”
He led Gwen and Tessa to a nearby café. After gathering his thoughts, he explained the source of his powers.
“So, you sneaked into Oscorp’s lab to find information about your father? That was reckless, Peter. Oscorp’s lawyers could bankrupt you and send you to jail!”
Gwen Stacy looked horrified.
“This is about Dr. Connors’ cross-species gene transfer project? It’s unbelievable that a spider bite could integrate its genes with yours.”
Tessa was disappointed, realizing Peter wasn’t possessed by any creature.
“Those spiders are my father’s research. It seems he transferred his genes into the spiders.”
Due to his father-son relationship, Peter easily assimilated the spider genes.
Gwen Stacy looked worried.
“You’re too rash, Peter. You shouldn’t reveal this secret so easily. Oscorp is obsessed with the cross-species gene project. You’re a living experiment to them. If they find out, they won’t let you go!”
She then stared at Tessa.
“Don’t worry, Gwen. I won’t tell anyone!” Tessa assured, her curiosity piqued. “So, Parker, what’s your superpower? How much can you lift?”
Peter scratched his head, having tested his abilities when he first got them.
“About two tons.”
(Full-fledged Spider-Man can lift 15-20 tons, but in the movies, a newly empowered Parker struggled to pull a one-ton car with his web, so here, his limit is set at two tons.)
Tessa was disappointed.
“That’s pretty weak. Can you shoot heat rays or energy blasts?”
Peter awkwardly shook his head.
“No.”
“Can you fly or stop bullets?”
Tessa was interested in superpowered individuals and mutants, but Broly’s intimidating presence prevented her from asking detailed questions.
The newly empowered and still a classmate Peter was an ideal target for her inquiries.
“No, none of that,” Peter said, feeling a strong sense of inadequacy. His powers seemed impressive initially, but Tessa’s questions humbled him.
Gwen Stacy started lecturing:
“Peter, your powers are just like an ordinary mutant’s. Don’t use them recklessly. If you encounter someone like the Green Demon, you’d be killed instantly!”
Due to media coverage of the Mexico City incident, the Green Demon was well-known in America.
Recent events in Mexico and Afghanistan had made the US government ambivalent about superpowered individuals. Gwen knew this wasn’t good. If special departments recruited them, they might face terrifying figures like the Green Demon. It was safer to live as an ordinary person.
Tessa felt a bit smug. Knowing Broly didn’t eat people, she admired him. She knew he went to Mexico to eliminate drug dealers.
“But Peter, since you’ve shown Dr. Connors the decay rate algorithm, you must join the project. Dr. Connors is obsessed with this project and won’t miss any chance of success. Trying to back out will only raise suspicions from him and Oscorp.”
Gwen, influenced by her father, was more mature than her peers.
Peter scratched his head. He had shared the algorithm with Dr. Connors to get an internship at Oscorp and be closer to Gwen.
