Nagato in One Piece - Chapter 19
Nagato sat in his room, unaware of CP9’s series of actions and the minor changes in the battles that took place. He had far too many things to worry about, but for now, his web was already spun; he only needed to be patient.
For two whole days, Nagato stayed indoors. To outsiders, it seemed as though the man who once caused a massive uproar in the city was now content to disappear and enjoy a life of luxury with his vast fortune. Little did they know that he was closely watching the events unfold on Enies Lobby, one of the World Government’s central institutions, through the eyes of the seabird he had sent out.
The commotion caused by the Straw Hat crew, who stormed Enies Lobby with a group of dozens, ended with the island turned upside down. There were some minor incidents—Franky trying to destroy the Pluton blueprints only to find them missing, and CP9 keeping a close watch on Franky, knowing he was now a Rumble-Rumble Fruit user, preventing him from joining the fight immediately.
However, all of this was inconsequential. Even without Franky, the now slightly weakened CP9 was easily defeated by the Straw Hat crew, just as Nagato had anticipated. He was waiting for CP9 to be defeated and for them to be on the run from the World Government.
Flutter—
High up in the sky, the seabird soared effortlessly on the wind, occasionally flapping its wings. Below it, the heavily injured CP9 agents struggled along the floating tracks of the sea train.
The seabird followed the seven agents until they finally reached a city and settled down.
“The Spring Queen City, St. Poplar.” Sharing the vision of the Rinnegan, Nagato immediately learned CP9’s location. He stood up and flew into the sky.
At the same time, a light rain began to fall in St. Poplar, making the already battered CP9 agents look even more pitiful.
“Hey, did you guys notice?” Jabra, who was carrying Kaku, couldn’t hold it in anymore and asked casually.
“Yes…” Blueno’s deep voice replied. “That bird in the sky has been following us.”
“Kumadori thinks it might just be a coincidence that it’s following the tracks like we are,” Kumadori mused, shaking his head.
Kalifa sighed, looking at Kumadori as if he were hopeless. “There’s no such thing as coincidence. And how would a seabird match our walking speed while we’re injured?”
“Indeed.” Fukurou unzipped his mouth. “I noticed that bird back on Enies Lobby. Chapa-pa.”
“That makes it even more troublesome…” Kalifa glanced at the still-unconscious Lucci and Kaku, her face turning even more serious. “And if I’m not mistaken, I’ve seen those eyes before.”
“What about its eyes?” Jabra asked, while rummaging through his pockets, finding nothing. He then asked the others, “By the way, do any of you have money? Finding a doctor and a place to stay won’t be cheap.”
Guessing the unsaid part of Kalifa’s statement, Blueno, the only other conscious member, recognized the pressing concern. Jabra’s question about money quickly shifted the focus. The group searched their pockets, only managing to find a few thousand Berries on Kaku’s unconscious body.
It was pathetic for them, the elite agents of the World Government, to be in need of cash. The group decided to find a cheap inn first and then figure out how to earn some money.
After searching for a while, the elite CP9 agents finally managed to rent a room in a cheap inn, much to the disdain of the owner. They laid down the unconscious Lucci and Kaku, leaving Blueno to look after them while the others went out to find a way to make some money.
“What should we do? We can’t resort to stealing or robbing,” Jabra grumbled as they left the inn.
“Of course not. We are still agents of justice,” Kalifa responded, one hand crossed over her chest and the other adjusting her glasses. “Given our current situation, we can’t take on long-term jobs. I suggest street performing.”
“Sounds feasible,” Fukurou agreed. “Chapa-pa.”
Kumadori also nodded, “Oiyo~ I agree!”
With Kalifa’s quick suggestion and the others’ immediate agreement, they headed to the city center.
The CP9 agents were not only powerful but also versatile. Street performing was a trivial task for them. Soon, in the city center of St. Poplar, Jabra’s wolf dance and Kumadori’s seppuku performance attracted a crowd. Even Fukurou’s zipper mouth entertained a group of children.
“Three thousand, one hundred and seventeen Berries,” Kalifa counted the money collected in her mind. “Still far from enough… Let’s hire a doctor to do some basic treatment for Lucci and Kaku.”
As she walked through the crowd, encouraging people to leave tips if they enjoyed the performance, she suddenly stopped in front of a figure.
Looking up, she met a pair of grey eyes with concentric circles.
“I traveled from Water 7. It took some time,” Nagato said. “Your current situation doesn’t seem very good.”
“Water 7…” Kalifa’s first thought was the distance between the two locations. “That’s over 300 kilometers away. And there’s been no sea train for the past two hours. How did he get here?”
She calculated quickly, maintaining a composed expression. “Nagato-san, what brings you to us?”
Seeing the bird with the same eyes as Nagato’s and now him in person, Kalifa knew he had come specifically for them. She signaled Jabra and the others to pack up. This wasn’t the place for a conversation.
Jabra and the others were confused, seeing the increasing crowd and potential earnings, but Kalifa’s signal made them comply. Upon seeing Nagato’s eyes, their expressions became serious, shifting from their performance mode to alertness.
“You even collect and record information unrelated to your missions,” Nagato said, noting his name being called. “As expected of CP9.”
After apologizing to the audience, Jabra, Kumadori, and Fukurou joined Kalifa and Nagato and left the square. Hearing Nagato’s comment, they glared at him.
Kalifa adjusted her glasses. “That sounds more like a mockery than a compliment, Nagato-san.”
Despite their exposure to Iceberg and the Straw Hats, their true identities remained a closely guarded secret. Nagato’s revealing their identities so easily was a clear failure for CP9.
As they walked to a secluded area, Jabra spoke up, “What’s the deal in Water 7? And what’s this guy’s deal? Should we just take him out?”
Kalifa remained silent, waiting for Nagato to explain. If unsatisfied, she would act immediately.
“I’m not here to cause trouble, CP9,” Nagato said, completely unfazed by their attempt to corner him. “I’m here to invite you to join the ‘Akatsuki’.”
