Nagato in One Piece - Chapter 23
CP9, as the World Government’s secret intelligence agency, boasted that there was nothing in the world they couldn’t find out if they set their minds to it. This was somewhat exaggerated, but the World Government was not blind. The user of the Ope Ope no Mi, Trafalgar Law, had already made a name for himself and was on the verge of becoming a Supernova. It was impossible not to have the necessary information on him. So when Nagato mentioned Law, CP9 retrieved the desired result from their accumulated intelligence…
“Record, Trafalgar Law, Den Den Mushi number DUI94437QP586L,” Kalifa recited a sequence of commands to a Den Den Mushi.
Nagato and the other CP9 agents waited quietly beside her.
They had moved from the abandoned dock to a hotel suite, as the noise from the earlier battle was too loud and the dock was not a secretive location.
“Record, Trafalgar Law, Den Den Mushi number DUI94437QP586L,” Kalifa repeated, this time through the Den Den Mushi in her hand. “Recording successful.”
This was how Den Den Mushi worked. Once it recorded the unique number, it could directly call the other Den Den Mushi.
Nagato took the Den Den Mushi from Kalifa and told the seven agents, “I need to speak to him alone.”
They exchanged glances, and then all left the room.
“Contact Law,” Nagato instructed the Den Den Mushi.
“Brrr… brrr… brrr…” The Den Den Mushi began to emit special bio-waves, searching for the recorded number.
After five rings, someone on the other end picked up. The Den Den Mushi perfectly mimicked the expression and voice of the person on the other end, “Hello, this is Trafalgar Law. Who is this on the other end of an unfamiliar Den Den Mushi?”
“Nagato,” Nagato replied. “Law, I need your help to take over Dressrosa!”
“!!!” On the other end, Law was shocked.
Meanwhile, outside the room, CP9 agents whispered among themselves.
“We can’t hear anything,” Fukurou and Kumadori, who were trying to eavesdrop, shook their heads in unison after failing to hear a sound.
Of course, they couldn’t hear anything. Nagato anticipated the possibility of CP9 trying to eavesdrop and set up a soundproof barrier. This proved correct as CP9 indeed attempted to listen in.
“Do you want me to read his lips from within the Door-Door World?” Blueno asked Lucci.
Lucci shook his head, “No. Standing outside the door can be justified as preventing others from eavesdropping. Using abilities to spy, if discovered, can’t be explained away. It’s not worth the risk.”
Lucci’s words settled the matter, and the seven agents waited patiently for Nagato to finish his call.
Inside the Heart Pirates’ submarine beneath the blue sea, somewhere on the Grand Line.
Law, who was gripping his Den Den Mushi tightly and shouting in shock, asked, “Hey… who are you? What do you want?”
“Calm down, Law,” the Den Den Mushi replied, its expression unchanged. “I believe I already answered those questions.”
“Nagato…” Law took a deep breath and said, “I don’t recall having any connections with anyone from Wano Country.”
Nagato’s voice came through, “I’m not from Wano Country. I understand your confusion because I approached you so directly due to certain reasons.”
“In other words, I have information about you, but you don’t know me.”
After the initial shock, Law forced himself to calm down. As his mind raced, he probed, “Hey… you seem to know a lot. A madman found my Den Den Mushi number, and now you’re talking about taking over Dressrosa… Sorry, but I have no reason to join you on a suicide mission. Goodbye!”
“Wait,” the Den Den Mushi remained calm, still mimicking Nagato’s expression. “I’m not here to waste your time.”
Nagato continued, “My information is not detailed but sufficient to explain—You were once part of the Donquixote Family. Donquixote Doflamingo, your former master, killed his brother, who saved you. Moreover, you have the Ope Ope no Mi, which Doflamingo desires. So, you have a grudge against him.”
“!!!”
Law’s expression changed dramatically again. After a few seconds, he forced a smile and said, “Nonsense! Do you think some random gossip you heard is true?”
Law tried to deny it.
Nagato’s information, as he said, wasn’t detailed. He couldn’t remember every detail, but the core facts were enough.
As for Law’s stubborn denial, it was necessary.
Only Law and the Donquixote Family’s executives knew about this past. Even Doflamingo didn’t know about Law’s connection to Corazon, still harboring hopes to win Law over for his abilities. This was why Law hadn’t been dismembered by Doflamingo yet. Otherwise, hiding in a submarine wouldn’t have been enough to escape “Heavenly Yaksha.”
Thus, Law had to deny it. His first thought wasn’t how someone knew this past but how to silence them.
“…”
This time, Nagato fell silent. Though his expression remained unchanged, he felt confused and troubled.
His vague memory didn’t help.
Nagato quickly decided that this was a matter of trust. He knew Law had a deep grudge against Doflamingo and wouldn’t refuse an ally against his enemy. Unlike the Straw Hats, if Nagato remembered correctly, Law would seek an alliance with Luffy against Doflamingo two years later.
Suspicious of his identity? Doubting his strength?
Nagato’s thoughts turned to these issues as he spoke, “I’m not your enemy, Law. But words are not enough. I want to meet you. You choose the time and place, and I’ll tell you my plan in person.”
To ease Law’s concerns, Nagato let him choose the time and place. Law’s Ope Ope no Mi allowed him to teleport, making him almost impossible to catch. Choosing a place unknown to Nagato gave Law ample security.
If Law was worried about facing Doflamingo’s strength, Nagato would explain his plan in person, confident he could convince Law.
However, Law still couldn’t decide. Agreeing would mean admitting his enmity with Doflamingo, a great risk since he wasn’t yet strong enough to face him. His caution made him control his emotions and reactions, not showing any change in expression.
“What are you still worried about?” Nagato pressed. “If I were with the Donquixote Family, I would have informed Doflamingo about this secret, not wasted time here.”
“My plan is to take over Dressrosa, which includes defeating Doflamingo. He won’t survive if all goes well. But first, I need your help against your enemy.”
“Time is pressing. Choose a place and contact me soon!”
After a few seconds of silence, as Nagato was about to hang up, Law finally spoke.
“I agree to meet you.” Pressing his cursed sword Kikoku against a wooden crate beside him, Law’s eyes were sharp. “Soon is fine, but we don’t know each other’s locations.”
With a confident and light-hearted smile, Law continued, “Third route of the Grand Line, sail 130 nautical miles northwest from the ‘Island of Bats’ Puda. Between there and the ‘Marine Amusement Park’ Geboa, there’s a small island. Three days from now, I’ll wait there for a day.”
“Can you make it?”
“Of course!”
