Nagato in One Piece - Chapter 7
Since his arrival, Nagato had defeated every opponent with overwhelming power, causing even Zoro to feel wary.
“Ahhh—damn you, circle eyes! Don’t interfere with my fight!”
Suddenly, Luffy’s shout came from a distance. Despite being blown into the upper cloud layer by Nagato, Luffy had jumped back down and returned.
“Enel! I’m back, and I’m going to beat you up!!!”
In Shandora, Luffy jumped onto a rooftop, his nostrils flaring with steam like a boiling kettle, clearly furious.
“Huh?” He exclaimed as he landed and saw the battle area in the center of Shandora. “Why is the lightning guy sleeping?”
“He’s dead, you idiot!” Nami and Zoro shouted in unison.
“Luffy!” Another crewmate of the Straw Hat Pirates arrived—Usopp, the ship’s sniper.
“Nami-swan, forgive your loving knight for being late~” Sanji, the cook, also arrived, his eyes turning into hearts as he spun towards Nami like a whirlwind.
“Ah! Robin-chan!” In mid-spin, Sanji noticed the injured Robin and immediately stopped, looking seriously and angrily at her injuries. “Chopper! Hurry up and treat Robin-chan!”
Chopper, following behind Sanji and Usopp, hurried over. Seeing Robin sitting on the ground and Zoro charred, he turned pale as if he had seen a ghost, covering his face with his tiny hooves and shouting, “Ah! Call a doctor!”
“You are the doctor, you idiot!” Nami, Sanji, and Usopp yelled.
Realizing this, Chopper clapped his hooves together. “Oh! I’m the doctor!”
After the humorous exchange, Chopper quickly tended to Robin and Zoro, opening his medical kit and starting treatment.
Meanwhile, in a corner, the great warrior of the Shandians, Wyper, and the former God of Skypiea, Gan Fall, were recovering from Enel’s electric shocks, struggling to stand.
The sound of rustling clothes in the wind heralded several figures descending from above—Nagato’s shadow clone had brought two doctors from Angel Island.
“God!” The two doctors, shocked by the chaotic scene, didn’t know whether to address Enel’s fallen form or Gan Fall, who was just getting up.
Realizing their mission, the doctors saw that the Blue Sea people already had their own medical personnel, so they hurried over to Gan Fall to treat him.
“Cough…” Gan Fall, leaning against a rock, allowed one doctor to diagnose him while instructing the other, “One doctor is enough for me. Please tend to the Shandian warrior Wyper.”
“This…” The doctor hesitated, unwilling to treat Wyper.
Angel Island and Shandora had been enemies for centuries!
“Hmph, Gan Fall, I don’t need your hypocritical kindness. Get you and your doctors, and these Blue Sea people, out of here!” Wyper spat blood as he spoke, but his determination was evident. Despite his severe injuries from the Reject Dial and Enel’s millions of volts, he shouted with unwavering resolve, “This is our Shandora!”
“Shandora…”
The ancient ruins echoed Wyper’s sentiment.
“Hey, Sky Knight, what’s going on here?” With Enel down and no opponent, Luffy uncharacteristically remained calm and asked Gan Fall.
Even Nagato didn’t rush to take the gold from the Ark Maxim, moved by Wyper’s resolve.
So, Gan Fall explained the history of God’s Island, once part of Jaya Island, and the centuries of bloody conflict between Angel Island’s inhabitants and the Shandians over land.
After hearing the story, the Straw Hat Pirates immediately concluded that Gan Fall’s side was in the wrong.
“You guys are the bad ones!” they said, glaring at Gan Fall.
“What nonsense are you spouting? We…” The two Angel Island doctors tried to retort but faltered, unable to defend their side’s actions convincingly.
Objectively, Angel Island was indeed the unjust side.
Gan Fall bowed his head in acknowledgement, saying, “Yes, we started this unjust war.”
But he couldn’t help but add, “However, the land has always been desired by the people of Angel Island. That’s why I always sought peace with the Shandians and hoped they would share some land with us.”
Gan Fall might have done his best from his perspective, and his sincere words moved the Straw Hat Pirates, softening their stance. Wyper, too weak to argue further, lay on Shandora’s soil, staring at the sky, seemingly seeing his dreams.
“Light the lamp of Shandora…” he murmured, his voice barely audible even to himself.
“Hey, raccoon dog, this man is dying. Come treat him first,” Nagato, now standing beside Wyper, called to Chopper, who was bandaging Zoro.
“I’m not a raccoon dog, I’m a reindeer, a reindeer!” Chopper, sensitive to being called a raccoon dog, angrily retorted at Nagato.
But seeing Wyper’s dire condition, Chopper hurried over with his medical tools.
“Using people’s desires to justify an unjust war, but your sins cannot be washed away, Gan Fall,” Nagato said, standing up as Chopper worked to save Wyper.
Gan Fall and the Straw Hat Pirates were taken aback by Nagato’s harsh, even cruel words, but Nagato continued, “Your words remind me of my homeland’s past. My country was once invaded, its land lost, countless people killed or enslaved, subjected to the horrors of war and gas attacks. It was hell.”
Nagato’s words turned Gan Fall and the others pale. He went on, “After eight years of brutal war, we finally won, but the pain didn’t end. The invaders denied their crimes, acknowledging only minor incidents and offering apologies. When we questioned them, they responded, ‘We’ve admitted our wrongs, what more do you want?'”
Gan Fall couldn’t meet Nagato’s gaze, and behind Nagato, tears streamed down Wyper’s face as he clenched his fists.
“If you truly regret, show some sincerity. Give the Shandians some tangible compensation and comfort—land, rights, wealth. Flowery words are worth nothing compared to human lives,” Nagato said calmly, looking at Gan Fall. “Your eloquence cannot outweigh the lives lost.”
Initially angered by Nagato’s harsh words, the Straw Hat Pirates fell silent, feeling as if a cold bucket of water had been dumped on them.
Nami covered her mouth, and Sanji lit a cigarette, deep in thought. Zoro, heavily injured, slept after his treatment. Robin’s expression was unreadable, while Usopp seemed lost in the heavy atmosphere. Chopper focused intently on treating Wyper.
Gan Fall’s expression shifted from dark to light and back again, finally ending with a deep sigh. “I can’t decide for the people of Angel Island.”
“You don’t need to report to me,” Nagato said, nodding. “I’m not a god, nor can I decide your fate. History will tell the truth.”
Nagato wasn’t from Angel Island or Shandora, so he had no personal stake in their conflict. Even though the Shandians had a just cause, Nagato wasn’t their savior. Perhaps Skypiea might become part of his ideal world in the future, but for now, it was too early.
“My purpose here is only for the gold.” Nagato said, leaping onto the Ark Maxim.
“Ah~ah~ah!” Usopp’s exaggerated scream echoed, mocking Nagato. “So, you’re not a good guy either!”
Gan Fall and Wyper had no objections, as they didn’t value gold. But the Straw Hat Pirates, including Luffy, viewed Nagato with suspicion and hostility, seeing him as a deceiver and villain.
Standing on the ship, Nagato extended his right hand. With Universal Pull, he grabbed Enel’s corpse from a distance and tossed it onto the deck, ignoring their opinions.
Regardless of what the Straw Hat Pirates thought, Nagato had every right to the gold on the Ark Maxim. Even if Gan Fall and Wyper wanted to stop him, it made sense for Nagato to claim what Enel had taken from them.
In fact, Nagato’s determination to achieve his ultimate goal was so strong that he wouldn’t hesitate to take Skypiea’s gold by force if necessary.
To achieve lasting peace, sacrifices could be made, and he accepted the unjust actions along the way.
