- Chapter 105 - The Humiliation
The ruins spread across Konoha’s main street, a place that had remained intact even during Neiki’s explosion. Now, amidst the battle between Konoha and Kumogakure, it lay in shambles. Even the famed Ichiraku Ramen had been reduced to a pile of rubble.
Ayame, watching this from afar while being held by her father, wept uncontrollably.
The one responsible was Akimichi Choza, the clan head of the Akimichi. However, it was clearly not his intention. The Super Multi-Size Technique had its flaws. While it increased his size and destructive power, it also made him an easy target for enemies. His struggle to fend off attacks led to the surrounding buildings’ destruction.
Konoha’s strategy took this potential devastation into account when it decided to leverage the village’s minor terrain advantages for urban combat against Kumogakure.
Despite moving the battle from the forest to the village, Konoha’s forces were still struggling.
This was not only because of the enemy’s superior numbers but also because, after Neiki’s betrayal and the Uchiha clan’s rebellion, Konoha had lost both the Uchiha and Hyuga clans, two major sources of kekkei genkai. The power gap between Konoha and Kumogakure widened significantly, with ordinary ninjas and kekkei genkai users being worlds apart. On the battlefield, a single kekkei genkai user could often handle multiple ordinary ninjas.
With the Uchiha and Hyuga clans gone, Konoha lacked hundreds of kekkei genkai users.
The battle had lasted only forty minutes, but Kumogakure’s original plan was to break through Konoha in one hour and quell all resistance in three. Judging by the current situation, they were likely to succeed.
The ground was littered with Konoha ninja corpses, and Kumogakure had essentially taken control of the area. They marked the boundaries and watched the ongoing battle within those boundaries with fervor.
“Lightning Release: Liger Bomb!”
The Fourth Raikage, A, roared as he descended upon Hiruzen Sarutobi with a powerful kick from above.
Boom!
Countless stones scattered.
A startled Hiruzen turned into a puddle of mud, and A’s leg got stuck, making it difficult to pull out.
“A mud clone?”
Surprised, he looked up to see the real Hiruzen forming seals beside him.
“Earth Release: Earth Flow River!”
The mud river surged, dragging A down.
Hiruzen quickly formed more seals:
“Earth Release: Earth Dragon Bullet!”
An earth dragon emerged, spitting mud bullets at A.
Seeing that the mud bullets couldn’t penetrate his Lightning Release armor, A sneered, ready to taunt Hiruzen, but Hiruzen roared,
“It’s not over yet!”
“Fire Release: Dragon Flame Bomb!”
“Combination Technique: Earth Dragon Flame!”
The mud bullets ignited with fiery flames, engulfing A.
Amidst the roaring flames, A screamed in pain. When Hiruzen stopped, all that remained of A was a pile of ashes.
Staring at the ashes, Hiruzen suddenly realized too late.
A’s lightning-clad fist struck him violently in the face.
In slow motion, Hiruzen’s face contorted under A’s punch.
Bang!
The immense force sent Hiruzen tumbling through countless walls until he finally stopped, cradled by a Konoha medical ninja who had leaped to save him.
Ignoring her own pain, the medical ninja quickly began treating Hiruzen. Seeing his sunken face, broken teeth, and bloodied mouth, tears streamed down her face.
“Lord Hokage…”
“Yuno, don’t cry… It’s okay…” Hiruzen tried to comfort her, but speaking hurt. He wanted to say his injuries weren’t severe, just looked worse, but the words were garbled.
“Lord Hokage, can we really defeat Kumogakure?”
“So many people have died, Lord Hokage…”
“Yuno… Yuno doesn’t want to die, and I want you to live too…”
Yuno cried, her pretty face marred by a scar running through her eyebrow. Despite her tears, her hands never stopped healing Hiruzen. She kept talking about who had died, who was still fighting, who had fled, and who was bravely charging at Kumogakure ninjas.
Her voice was broken, her thoughts disjointed, but she spoke through her sobs, saying whatever came to mind.
Finally, wiping her tears, she asked, “Lord Hokage, can we really survive this crisis?”
An explosion echoed above. Hiruzen sighed, shakily stood up, spat out some blood, and, with a determined look, smiled at Yuno.
“Absolutely. The Hokage… will protect you.”
With that, Hiruzen climbed out of the hole in the wall.
The Raikage, searching for him, turned and grinned, dropping a Konoha ninja he had been holding.
“So, that’s where you were hiding?”
Ignoring him, Hiruzen signaled to two figures on a distant cliff before turning his attention back to A.
Facing such an opponent was overwhelming.
Extreme speed, strength, and endurance.
Konoha’s strategists had racked their brains on how to deal with such a foe.
They had contingency plans, but those plans struggled to work against such overwhelming power.
The Third Raikage fought for three days and nights on a battlefield of ten thousand before dying. The Fourth Raikage was even tougher, and Kumogakure’s attack wasn’t just him alone. They brought more and better ninjas, led by the Fourth Raikage, like a sharp knife.
They weren’t here for a stroll; they aimed to annihilate Konoha.
“You’re signaling the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki to escape?” A raised an eyebrow, shaking his head. “It won’t matter. Once I capture you, someone will hand over the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki.”
“That gift from Minato to Naruto won’t fall into your hands.” Hiruzen straightened his jaw, speaking calmly.
“Tailed beasts are natural entities. When did they become Konoha’s property?” A laughed. “I respected Minato; he was a worthy opponent. If he were still here, I wouldn’t attack Konoha.”
“Of course, I’ll treat his son well. He’ll live comfortably in Kumogakure until we’re ready for the tailed beast extraction ritual.”
Arrogant.
Greedy.
Overconfident.
I’m to be taken captive and used to force other Konoha ninjas to surrender?
Hiruzen shook his head.
“I’m being underestimated…”
The war continued, but unlike before, where Konoha ninjas were the majority, now the battlefield was filled with more and more Kumogakure ninjas. A had marked the boundaries, forbidding other Kumogakure ninjas from interfering in their duel, but as Konoha’s resistance weakened, many Kumogakure ninjas, finding no opponents, sat watching the spectacle, blowing bubbles out of boredom.
### Chapter 107: Humiliation
The Konoha flag atop the temporary Hokage building was replaced with Kumogakure’s emblem.
A resounding crash echoed as the massive figure of Akimichi Choza fell in the distance, disappearing from view.
At the entrance of the newly established ninja hospital, the body of a female Konoha ninja hung.
Several Konoha prisoners, stripped to their waists, were paraded through the ruins by Kumogakure ninjas, hoping to provoke hidden Konoha ninjas into a reckless attack.
Resistance continued in the surroundings but had significantly dwindled.
This was a war and the most humiliating moment in Konoha’s history since its founding.
Konoha’s forces fought tenaciously, but given their inferior numbers and strength, it was only a matter of time before they succumbed.
“The cause of all this… is me,” Hiruzen thought, his heart heavy but his resolve strengthening.
Kumogakure’s forces weren’t numerous. If he could kill the Raikage, Konoha might still have a chance once Jiraiya’s reinforcements arrived.
This current humiliation was undoubtedly temporary.
Hiruzen had repeatedly proven he couldn’t handle this type of opponent. As Earth Release was naturally countered by Lightning Release, a ninjutsu professor like him was at a disadvantage against someone as tough, fast, and strong as A.
There weren’t many ways to deal with such an opponent, but there were some.
Thanks to Minato’s care, Hiruzen had survived numerous crises. With Konoha’s situation so dire, he felt it was his time to atone with his life for the mistakes he’d made.
Without hesitation, Hiruzen began to form hand seals rapidly.
Dead Demon Consuming Seal…
Snake-Boar-Ram-Rabbit-Dog…
Boom!
A quick leg sweep hit him, but this time Hiruzen blocked with his arm, still getting kicked away.
Buried under rubble, he tried to continue forming seals.
However…
“Lightning Release: Lariat!”
A’s arm transformed into a blade, piercing through the rubble. Hiruzen narrowly avoided the strike, facing A’s charging figure with a grim expression.
He didn’t even have a chance to perform the jutsu!
Bang!
His body slammed into a wall, spitting blood, his vision swimming. Around him, young Kumogakure ninjas jeered. Ignoring them, Hiruzen knew Naruto was watching from afar. This true demonstration of the Will of Fire had to be completed.
With trembling hands, he resumed forming seals.
The Raikage, puzzled, walked towards Hiruzen, casually asking,
“What jutsu needs such long hand seals? What’s the point? Can you really turn this around?”
As he spoke, a figure stepped between him and Hiruzen.
“You won’t harm the Hokage!” Yuno, her ponytail swaying in the wind, shouted bravely.
Both Hiruzen and A were stunned.
“Hey, hey, hey, do you think a little medical ninja can interfere in a duel between Kages?” The Kumogakure ninjas were displeased.
Before the Raikage could act, someone moved to drag her away.
Hiruzen’s lips quivered, remembering his promise to her. He let go of the hand seal, clenching his fist.
The next second, a golden staff extended from nowhere, knocking away the approaching Kumogakure ninjas.
While the staff engaged the Kumogakure ninjas, the Raikage bypassed them, standing before Hiruzen.
“This is necessary.”
He then grabbed Hiruzen’s arm and broke it with a snap.
“Ahhh—”
Hiruzen screamed, clutching his broken left arm, his eyes bloodshot but still glaring at A with a grim face.
A looked at him in surprise, “It seems you’ve finally accepted your fate.”
…
On the cliff.
“We have to go,” Ebisu’s voice trembled.
“No, the Hokage wanted me to see something… I haven’t seen it yet…” Naruto shook his head firmly.
“It’s… over. From the moment the Hokage lost his arm.”
“No.”
Ebisu didn’t argue further, instead casting a binding jutsu on Naruto, intending to flee.
“Wait… really!!” Naruto shouted, “I see it—the thing the Hokage wanted to show me!!”
Ebisu didn’t believe him, but Naruto’s struggle made him glance back.
Then.
He froze.
That was…
Those people were…
…
Enma the Monkey King went berserk, but seeing Hiruzen in the Raikage’s grasp, the indestructible summon quieted down.
“Not bad,” the Raikage chuckled, already imagining the effect on the remaining Konoha ninjas seeing this.
Kumogakure ninjas cheered around them.
Capturing another Kage, especially the famed Third Hokage, was unprecedented for Kumogakure.
It practically signaled the end of the war. Kumogakure would ascend to the pinnacle on Konoha’s corpse.
“Why is it getting louder…” A wasn’t referring to the cheers but the increasing explosions and jutsu sounds in the distance.
Strange.
The battle should be winding down, but the sounds were intensifying, moving closer.
A thud, like something hitting the ground.
“So, you are here.”
The voice was sudden, and everyone turned to see a bandaged man with only one eye exposed, standing on a rooftop, leaning on a cane.
He had pushed down the body of a Kumogakure ninja.
“Kuyoi!”
The Kumogakure ninja who had stripped Konoha prisoners to parade them.
When did…
Hiruzen squinted, seeing Danzo’s face shrouded in shadow against the sunlight, like roots emerging from the darkness.
Behind him, dozens of figures appeared.
Could Konoha still have such a substantial resistance force?
But as Hiruzen recognized their faces, especially one expression, he couldn’t help but lower his head.
“So pathetic, Hiruzen,” Danzo remarked coldly.
