- Chapter 60 - When a Nation Declines, There Will Be Monstrosities - A Chaotic Konoha
“Minato has returned?”
“Hmph.”
“Is this the prized disciple of Hiruzen? The one who managed to lose all of Konoha’s defenses within a few days?!”
Danzo Shimura roared, slamming his fist on the table, causing Homura Mitokado and Koharu Utatane’s faces to darken.
Though they harbored some blame towards Minato, now was not the time for this discussion.
“I think…”
Knowing his old friend’s temperament well, Homura Mitokado interrupted.
“Danzo, now isn’t the time for blame.”
“Have you received a reply to the peace proposal you sent?”
Danzo swallowed his retort at these words, his anger subsiding as his brows slightly relaxed.
Upon hearing of Minato’s defeat, he immediately sent out a peace proposal on his own, which garnered the approval of the two council members.
This was his first time exercising a power close to that of the Hokage.
The thought brought a hint of joy, replacing his anger.
The taste of power, the taste of Hokage’s power, was truly intoxicating.
Suppressing his excitement, he resumed his cold tone.
“Not yet.”
Pausing, Danzo continued confidently.
“However, based on Naoki’s behavior, he should not reject the proposal. Continuing the attack yields no greater benefits for him.”
“However, who would have thought that after such a prolonged war, we would have to make peace first with a small nation like Kirigakure.”
Danzo snorted, ready to continue his tirade against Minato.
At that moment, a knock on the door interrupted.
“Lord Danzo, a reply from Naoki has arrived.”
“Oh?”
“Come in.”
Danzo adjusted his robe slightly before taking the scroll from the “Konoha ninja” who delivered it.
However, as his ambitious eyes scanned the words on the scroll, they filled with fury, and his face turned a mottled red with rage.
Glaring at the “Konoha ninja” before him, he gritted his teeth.
“Leave, return to the Root, and face your punishment. You know what that entails.”
The “Konoha ninja” left expressionlessly, exiting the room.
Handing the scroll to his colleagues, Danzo listened as they echoed sentiments of outrage, but his expression remained stern.
He thought Konoha’s endurance was partially due to Hiruzen. Konoha’s prosperity wouldn’t exist without his efforts in the shadows.
His eyes burned with anger.
As the Root, he bore the darkness. Only by becoming Hokage could he bask in the sunlight atop the cliff.
Hokage.
It was all about becoming Hokage.
Danzo’s heart surged with murderous intent and ambition.
Naoki, that brat, would die by his hand eventually.
And the Hokage position must be his.
No.
No.
A shadow passed over his eyes, and he calmed himself.
No rush. Wait a bit longer.
The defeat should be Hiruzen’s burden to bear.
Orochimaru’s human experiments, the evidence was in his hands.
Minato, the defeat could be pinned entirely on him.
And that sickly boy couldn’t be cured, let alone become Hokage.
Those two, Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Hmph, had no intention of becoming Hokage.
If so, the Fourth Hokage position should naturally be his.
Danzo stood, looking at his ineffectual colleagues and the panicked crowd outside, feeling a surge of ambition.
Look, Hiruzen, see how Konoha has declined under your rule.
Reviving Konoha would be his duty as the Fourth Hokage, Danzo vowed.
. . . . .
The “Konoha ninja” left, noticing no Root members forcefully tried to take her away. She couldn’t help but internally mock.
Danzo is so confident.
You think your subordinates are obedient dogs, don’t you?
But this made things easier for her.
With that thought, she left the room.
Walking to a dark alley, she was met by three bone clones.
“The plan has changed. Danzo sent me back. Report your statuses to me, and I’ll relay them to the main body.”
The three clones nodded, and the “Konoha ninja” began with the first.
The first bone clone spoke with a somewhat unusual expression.
“I was preparing to spread the word that Minato was responsible for the defeat, only to find that the news had already spread throughout Konoha.”
He shrugged helplessly.
“Before I even acted, the rumor had swept through the village. I don’t know what kind of public opinion White Fang faced, but it was probably similar.”
The “Konoha ninja” nodded in satisfaction.
While he knew Minato couldn’t be turned against Konoha, Kushina could be swayed.
It makes her resent and hate Konoha, and when Obito attacked, their organization could save Kushina and Naruto.
Then, the reincarnation of Asura would be in their hands.
When the benefits outweigh the costs, these methods won’t be spared.
Turning to the next bone clone, he asked.
“And you?”
The clone reported.
“Spreading the news that Kushina is the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki went smoothly, but it didn’t garner as much attention as blaming Minato for the defeat.”
“Good.”
As expected, the “Konoha ninja” nodded before looking at the last clone.
“And you?”
The clone’s face darkened.
“No one cares about Danzo, who never appeared in the war. The idea of making him Hokage isn’t spreading at all!”
The “Konoha ninja” chuckled.
“Then stop trying. Wait for the main body’s call.”
“Main body? What’s next?”
The “Konoha ninja” took on a strange expression, slowly explaining.
“The main body wants to record his coup process to inspire the Uchiha radicals.”
“Will it work?”
The bone clone shook his head.
“Does this mean we need to incite the Uchiha to seize the Hokage position?”
“Does that even need inciting?”
The “Konoha ninja” rolled his eyes, clearly unimpressed with the clone’s intelligence.
“Oh, right.”
The clone scratched his head, earning a scornful look from the “Konoha ninja.”
“Just do your part.”
“I’ll continue monitoring Konoha, then dissolve to return the memories to the main body for decisions.”
“Got it.”
The three clones nodded, leaving the alley.
The “Konoha ninja” emerged as they vanished, wearing a peculiar expression.
The bustling, panicked crowd, the grim and violent Konoha ninja, and the mobs demanding accountability from Minato and Hiruzen.
So chaotic.
It felt just like Kirigakure.
Konoha was no longer invincible.
Walking and observing, the bone clone took a deep breath.
If the main body came here arrogantly…
It could stir more public opinion, extracting more reparations and territory.
Of course, it could also provoke Konoha to abandon two fronts and fully retaliate.
You’d better leave the specifics to the main body.
Progress is needed to accelerate Konoha’s disruption, root out Kirigakure’s parasites, and stage a coup.
