Chapter 106: Fourth Hokage! Chiba!
Early the following morning, the Third Hokage’s funeral and memorial service were held simultaneously.
The cause of the Third Hokage’s death was determined through consultations among various ethnic groups. A fierce battle against powerful alien foes!
Naturally, they couldn’t fall for Danzo’s ruse; it was far too childish. Resisting a formidable adversary in a fight to the death not only provided a rationale for Sarutobi Hiruzen’s demise but also propelled Chiba to the position of the Fourth Hokage.
Indeed, among the different clans, it was said that Chiba was the one who had vanquished the mighty enemy. At the memorial service, people from all ethnic backgrounds gathered, their faces etched with sorrow.
Many villagers came to offer their condolences and hear tales of the Third Hokage’s valiant stand against formidable adversaries. Chiba was also present, albeit unwillingly.
He had been coerced into attending. The memorial service lasted well into the morning.
“It’s finally over.”
Chiba’s legs were numb from sitting on the ground, and he could finally return to his farm.
Or so he thought.
As soon as he stood up, the clan leaders dragged him to the Hokage building.
“Chiba! Following discussions among our clans, you will temporarily assume the role of the Fourth Hokage!”
To be honest, Chiba’s mind went blank at this moment. He had no prior knowledge of this.
“We have dispatched individuals to gather the villagers; you should prepare your speech.
The Nara clan leader solemnly left these words behind. Not just him; all the clan leaders left the Hokage building. Clearly, they didn’t see it fitting to stand alongside Chiba.
Whoosh!
At that moment, Hatake Sakumo appeared.
“Chiba, no! Fourth Hokage-sama! I am the captain of Anbu, Hatake Sakumo!”
After introducing himself, Hatake Sakumo had mixed feelings. He believed Chiba’s sudden transformation in status was too rapid, almost unreal.
“Oh.”
Chiba was listless and lacked enthusiasm. Being Hokage was not something he truly desired. Being a farmer was his dream. Chiba was lost in thought.
Hatake Sakumo was not one to idle around and handed Chiba a brand-new Hokage robe. Seeing that Chiba remained motionless, Hatake directly helped him change.
“By the way, Hokage-sama! Is your speech ready?”
Suddenly, Hatake Sakumo inquired. Chiba shook his head.
‘A speech? What use was there for such a thing?’
Speaking out loud should suffice. Since things were now irreversible, Chiba decided to accept the reality.
“Hatake Sakumo! Assemble all the Anbu members immediately, gather in the meeting room, and wait for me.”
Chiba regained his determination and felt compelled to take action. As a Fourth Hokage with a distinctive flair, he needed to stand out, to be unique.
Before long, a dozen Anbu had gathered in the conference room. And Chiba, now a Hokage, issued his first directive.
Create gold bars! With his mimicry ability activated, he produced gold dust placers one by one. The Anbu’s task was to shape these placers into gold bars.
“Isn’t the Fourth Hokage’s ability a bit exaggerated?”
“So much gold dust produced in such a short time?”
“Gold bars? This is incredible.”
“Let’s get to work!”
The group of Anbu began their task, their excitement was palpable.
“Do it well! After distributing them to the villagers, it will be your turn.”
With these words, Chiba departed. The others left as well, but his earlier statement lingered in the hearts of every Anbu.
“Did I hear correctly? We’re giving gold bars to the villagers?”
“We get some too?”
“That’s amazing!”
“Let’s hurry!”
…
When Chiba ascended to the top of the Hokage building, a considerable number of villagers had already gathered in the courtyard below.
For Chiba, nearly everyone recognized him.
The one who tended to the farm cleared dung and enjoyed his meals openly. This was the villagers’ first impression of Chiba. They were bewildered: how could such a person become the Fourth Hokage?
…
On the rooftop, Danzo gestured, signaling that Chiba could begin speaking. He felt that he couldn’t delay any longer; if he did, the villagers might start questioning him.
Step by step, wearing his Hokage attire and hat, Chiba approached the railing. Surveying the villagers, Chiba noticed skepticism, confusion, and even disgust.
He realized that the villagers’ expressions were universally negative; there was no joy or excitement to be found.
Chiba cleared his throat, ready to reshape their perception of him in one fell swoop.
“I am the Fourth Hokage! My first act as Hokage will be to give each villager a one-pound gold coin!”
Chiba’s statement was concise. He waited for the villagers to erupt in cheers. However, to his surprise, those around him remained skeptical and silent.
“Danzo!”
“Hokage-sama!”
Danzo hurried over, drawing nearer to Chiba.
“Immediately send someone to collect the villagers’ information! Each household will receive a one-pound gold bar!”
“Go to the conference room to claim the gold bars!”
After delivering these instructions, Chiba waved his hand.
Finally, the villagers’ expressions shifted from doubt to ecstasy, and then to adoration. People cheered and jumped with excitement.
“Long live the Fourth Hokage!”
“Support the Fourth Hokage!”
“Master Hokage is so benevolent!”
“Hokage, we love you!”
Hearing the villagers’ cheers, Chiba’s ears perked up.
He caught the phrase “we love you” and turned to locate the source.
To his surprise, it was an elderly woman in her fifties.
Chiba: “”
He quickly averted his gaze, waved his hands, and maintained a smile for the villagers. Danzo’s plan had succeeded. As Chiba pondered how to make an exit, Tuan (Li De’s) Zang’s people set up over a dozen tables and began registering the villagers’ information.
This was Chiba’s chance to slip away. Upon returning to the meeting room, the leaders of the various clans arrived.
Their eyes were fixed on the gold bars in the room, their excitement evident. Seeing that everyone was present, Chiba got straight to the point.
“Calculate the number of clan members and their strengths.”
“The stronger the clan, the more gold bars they receive.”
“The larger the clan’s size, the more gold bars they receive!”
Chiba had just finished speaking. The Uchiha clan leader beamed with joy.
In terms of strength, the Uchiha claimed second place in the village, and no other clan dared to contest their position. Regarding numbers, the Uchiha clan surpassed all others.
