Chapter 80: Chiba: Tengai Shinsei!
At the border of the Land of Fire, within the command post of the Konoha defense force, Commander Hatake Sakumo was busy writing a scroll requesting reinforcements. The scroll was a request to send Tsunade from the village.
If it weren’t for the poison gas developed by Chiyo hindering Hatake Sakumo, he wouldn’t have been passively defending and would have already launched a counterattack.
After finishing the scroll, Hatake recruited a subordinate and instructed him, “Send this scroll back to the village.”
“Yes!” The subordinate acknowledged and left the room.
Once alone, Hatake Sakumo began studying the map, trying to find weaknesses in the Sand Shinobi’s defenses. He had done this kind of research countless times to pass the time.
Just then, footsteps could be heard outside, and the captain of the ninja who was responsible for observing the enemy’s movements entered the room.
“Lord Sakumo, the ninjas at the Sand Shinobi camp suddenly withdrew from their positions,” the captain reported.
“Oh?” Hatake Sakumo furrowed his brows upon hearing the news and stood up from his seat.
He quickly made his way to the observation post, a cylindrical building over five meters tall, which served the purpose of observing the Sand Shinobi positions across the canyon. As he looked at the Sand Shinobi positions, Hatake Sakumo appeared puzzled.
“It’s strange. If the issue was due to shortages, the Sand Shinobi should have evacuated their positions under the cover of night. How could they withdraw in broad daylight?” he muttered to himself, feeling perplexed.
Hatake Sakumo was no fool. He wouldn’t launch a counterattack without understanding the enemy’s motives.
“They seem to have stopped,” the captain of the observation team reported, interrupting Hatake Sakumo’s thoughts.
“Stopped? So they didn’t evacuate their positions?” Hatake Sakumo questioned.
“Yes! They seem to be… welcoming someone.” The captain’s voice was filled with uncertainty.
Due to the distance, the observing ninjas could only make out blurry figures and movements.
“Who are they welcoming?” Hatake Sakumo’s eyes widened in surprise.
He was taken aback by the thought that someone could command such respect that the entire Sand Shinobi frontline troops would go out to welcome them.
At that moment, Hatake Sakumo’s expression drastically changed as a realization struck him.
“The Third Kazekage? Has he come to the front?” he pondered.
The more he considered it, the more it seemed plausible. Only the Third Kazekage possessed the authority and influence to receive such a grand reception.
“Immediately send my order. The defense forces should be on high alert,” Hatake Sakumo commanded.
After issuing the emergency order, Hatake Sakumo instructed the observation team to continue monitoring and reporting any changes.
He then made his way toward the position square.
Suddenly, a guard ninja approached Hatake Sakumo, informing him that they had caught a suspected spy.
“A spy? Are you certain?” Hatake Sakumo grew suspicious.
Anyone entering the position should be coming from the direction of the village, making it highly unlikely for them to be spies.
Chiba, who had been listening to the conversation, was exasperated. He had fainted as soon as he entered the position, only to be accused of being a spy by seven or eight men.
“Danzo wouldn’t dare call me a spy, but you slander good people?” Chiba exclaimed.
“Sarutobi Hiruzen bows his head when he sees me, and Mitokado Homura has to kneel every time he comes across me…”
With his hands on his hips, Chiba confronted the eight men who had accused him.
Hearing Chiba’s words, the eight men were dumbfounded. They didn’t know Chiba, but they recognized the three high-ranking officials he mentioned. They were powerful figures in the village, and it was strange to hear someone describe them as subservient.
At that moment, a cough broke the silence. Hatake Sakumo arrived at the scene. As soon as he saw Chiba, a sense of familiarity washed over him. He struggled to recall where he had seen him before.
“It’s you!” Hatake Sakumo exclaimed.
“Huh? Do we know each other?” Chiba felt embarrassed because he couldn’t remember.
“My name is Hatake Sakumo, the frontline commander,” Hatake Sakumo introduced himself. “I’ve long admired you.”
Chiba finally recognized Hatake Sakumo, realizing that he had forgotten to pay attention to the man’s distinctive hair.
“I know you, Chiba! I still remember that rain of… well, you know,” Hatake Sakumo recalled, and the others suddenly realized why they had found Chiba’s appearance familiar.
They remembered the day when a cloud of an unpleasant nature drifted over their camp, causing them to be drenched in a foul substance.
“Ahem, if you didn’t mention it, I would’ve forgotten about that incident,” Chiba admitted, feeling slightly embarrassed.
Just then, the captain of the observation team rushed in.
“Lord Sakumo! It really is the Third Kazekage!” the captain exclaimed.
“It’s confirmed?” Hatake Sakumo’s skepticism turned into certainty as the focus shifted to the presence of the Kazekage.
“Send a message back to the village immediately. Inform them that the Third Kazekage is at the front,” Hatake Sakumo ordered.
“All ninjas, seek cover,” he continued his expression grave.
Hatake Sakumo knew all too well that the Third Kazekage possessed the Magnet Style and could launch long-range attacks with sand and iron. Without proper cover, the Konoha defense force would suffer significant losses.
As the order was given, the ninjas in the position quickly sought shelter. However, there was one exception.
“The Third Kazekage has come to the front?” Chiba initially showed no emotion, but upon hearing the Kazekage’s name, anger welled up inside him.
“He poisoned my pig and nearly killed my friend,” Chiba muttered to himself.
Without hesitation, he stomped his foot on the ground and rushed toward the edge of the canyon.
“What are you doing? Come back!” Hatake Sakumo shouted, but his words fell on deaf ears.
At the Sand Shinobi frontline, surrounded by a large number of shinobi, the Third Kazekage walked towards the edge of the canyon with an air of invincibility.
“Kazekage-sama! The Konoha shinobi on the other side are seeking cover!” one of his subordinates reported.
“A bunker? For Kazekage-sama, a bunker is useless!” another remarked confidently.
“Master Kazekage is invincible!”
“I love you, Kazekage!” someone shouted enthusiastically.
While the Third Kazekage’s stride was seemingly unstoppable, his body abruptly paused when he heard the declaration of love.
These were just brief moments.
Standing on the edge of the canyon, the Third Kazekage squinted his eyes and scanned the Konoha defensive position on the other side.
“So these are the Konoha shinobi who lack the courage to fight?” he sneered.
However, at that moment, he noticed a young man charging out from the Konoha defense position, his face filled with anger.
The Third Kazekage, with his subordinates’ reminder, recognized the Sand Shinobi behind the young man.
“It’s him! The dung collector!” Kazekage’s expression changed suddenly.
Anger and a sense of murderous intent filled his being. This person killed Rosa and Saari and disrupted his plans.
“Chiba!” the name escaped his lips as the Third Kazekage’s hands swiftly formed seals.
Across the canyon, Chiba locked eyes with the Third Kazekage, his own anger burning intensely.
He sought revenge, revenge for the thousands of pigs that had perished. Revenge for Shizuka and Fujiki. Clasping his hands together, Chiba activated his imitation ability.
Tengai Shinsei!
In the next moment, a deafening explosion shattered the tranquil sky.
The heavens turned dark.
