Chapter 84: Gap! Crack!
Early the next morning, Chiba woke up feeling energized. He decided it was time to return to the village since there was no longer a need to stay at the Sand Shinobi position. However, to his surprise, Hatake Sakumo and some of his subordinates joined him on the journey back.
As they traveled, Chiba noticed that the people accompanying him seemed to look at him strangely. Perplexed, he approached Hatake Sakumo to ask what was going on. But every time he got closer, they would immediately create distance between them.
Confused and determined to find answers, Chiba tried to approach others, but they would scatter as soon as he made a move. Frustrated, Chiba approached a big man who initially blocked him and demanded an explanation.
“Master Chiba, actually…” the big man began.
Before he could continue, Chiba realized that everyone around him was staring with a warning in their eyes. Frustrated, he urged them to speak up, and the big man finally responded, saying they were setting up a formation to protect his safety.
At that moment, Hatake Sakumo arrived, bringing a scroll from the village. He handed it to Chiba with admiration. Chiba was taken aback. Could it be that what the others said was true? The contents of the scroll confirmed that the village was concerned about his safety and had sent a group to protect him.
Feeling touched, Chiba exclaimed, “The village is too worried about me, sending so many people to protect me.” The people around him let out a sigh of relief.
Suddenly, a thought struck Chiba. “Don’t we occupy the Sand Shinobi position?” he asked, puzzled. He couldn’t understand why they were returning to the village when they could seize the opportunity to advance further by occupying the enemy’s position.
“We are only defending the border. The Sand Shinobi position falls within the territory of the Kawa no country,” Hatake Sakumo explained. “If we were to take the Sand Shinobi position, we would no longer be defenders but aggressors, invading the Land of Rivers.”
Chiba finally understood. The objective was to resist the Sand and support Sichuan. Hatake Sakumo had returned to the village to report on the battle situation, unable to convey it effectively through writing.
After half a day, they arrived at Konoha Village. Chiba rushed to the back mountain, while Hatake Sakumo headed to the Hokage building for a meeting.
In the Hokage Meeting Room, Hatake Sakumo provided a detailed report on the border situation. Sarutobi Hiruzen dismissed him, instructing him to rest. Only the four remained in the room.
Danzo, Homura, and Koharu were all in shock. They couldn’t believe that Chiba single-handedly defeated the entire Sand Shinobi front. The fact that even the renowned Third Kazekage fell to Chiba’s hands left them speechless.
Sarutobi Hiruzen, with a dignified expression, acknowledged Chiba’s victory. However, he voiced his concerns about Chiba’s rapid rise in power and the potential for arrogance and reckless behavior.
“Chiba has defied orders twice and left the village without permission, displaying signs of being out of control,” Sarutobi Hiruzen declared. “I believe it’s necessary to start monitoring Chiba.”
Danzo, who had a private arrangement with Chiba, felt uncomfortable under Hiruzen’s gaze. Homura, on the other hand, spoke up in Chiba’s defense, reminding them of how Chiba had saved Asuma.
But Sarutobi Hiruzen challenged Homura, questioning his concern for the village’s safety. With two in favor and two opposed, the decision hung in the balance.
