Chapter 94: Two Heroes Join Forces, Kakuzu Will Play Again
Danzo couldn’t believe it. Someone had offered a reward of 50 million taels on the black market? And the target was Chiba?
“Where is Chiba?” Danzo asked.
“Reporting to Master Danzo, Chiba has just returned to the village,” the subordinate answered.
Danzo felt relieved upon hearing that Chiba had returned. But then he realized something.
“Just returned to the village? Chiba actually ran out of the village again?” Danzo wondered.
“It’s a good thing nothing happened. He hasn’t given me the gold bars yet,” Danzo muttered to himself. He left the base and headed towards the Sarutobi Clan residence.
When Danzo arrived at the residence, he found Sarutobi Hiruzen painting in a gazebo. Danzo confronted Hiruzen.
“Hiruzen, did you send someone to put a bounty on Chiba in the black market?”
Hiruzen paused, with a crack drawn on the paper by his pen. He motioned for Danzo to sit down. The two sat opposite each other in silence. Eventually, Danzo couldn’t contain his curiosity any longer.
“Hiruzen, do you know that if our village continues to develop like this, within ten years, Konoha will rule the entire ninja world?” Danzo asked.
“The key to it all is Chiba. With his ability to create gold, our unification of the ninja world is within reach,” Danzo explained. “But why did you put a bounty on him?”
Danzo couldn’t understand how killing Chiba would benefit the village. It seemed counterproductive.
Hiruzen looked at Danzo, his eyes deep with meaning. He asked a thought-provoking question.
“Tell me, when the time comes, will Konoha rule the ninja world, or will Chiba rule the ninja world?”
Danzo remained silent, unsure of how to answer. Hiruzen continued his line of questioning.
“You know that if other clans find out about Chiba’s ability in the future, how do you think they will react?” Hiruzen asked, fixing his gaze on Danzo.
Danzo realized the potential reactions of other clans and the implications for Chiba’s position. It became clear to him.
“I understand,” Danzo said with a heavy tone.
Hiruzen smiled, acknowledging Danzo’s comprehension of the situation. However, Danzo shook his head.
“What if I join Chiba’s side?” Danzo proposed.
Danzo didn’t want to target Chiba anymore. Their alliance was advantageous for him, and he didn’t want to lose it. Hiruzen sighed, realizing the limitations of Danzo’s situation.
“You can’t join because you bear my mark. Even if you wanted to join, other clans wouldn’t agree,” Hiruzen explained. “It’s human nature, and it can’t be changed.”
Danzo left the residence with a heavy heart. He went to the back mountain, where Chiba awaited him.
“Master Danzo, I thought you didn’t want any money?” Chiba asked, pointing to the wooden house and requesting Water Style ninjas.
After collecting the gold bars, Danzo paused beside Chiba.
“Chiba, do friends matter to you?” Danzo asked unexpectedly.
Chiba was surprised by the question. He answered, “Master Danzo, if you consider me a friend, then we are friends.”
Danzo was taken aback by Chiba’s response. He pondered on the concept of friendship, considering their previous conspiratorial plans against Chiba. Danzo wasn’t sure if their relationship could be classified as friendship.
Danzo departed, leaving Chiba behind. Jingmei approached Chiba with a puzzled expression.
“Chiba, is Master Danzo worried?” Shizuka asked.
Chiba replied, “I don’t know. Maybe his uncle is here…”
Chiba contemplated the situation from the top of the hill, watching the village intently.
“I’ll stay the same for now. The mastermind behind this will attack again. I just need to find the clues for next time,” Chiba resolved.
Chiba believed that the mastermind wouldn’t give up, so he would wait for their next move. Once he obtained a clue, he could expose the mastermind’s identity.
“Don’t let me discover who you are! Otherwise, I will make you and your whole family pay!” Chiba declared.
The black market experienced another significant upheaval. The target was still Chiba, and the bounty was now 500 million taels.
The assassins were astounded by the unprecedented price increase. They discussed the matter and questioned Kakuzu’s absence.
At that moment, Kakuzu, followed by a group of assassins, approached the gold exchange.
“Hey! I was just looking for some villagers to collect dung. Why are there so many colleagues here?” Kakuzu panicked.
Being outnumbered, Kakuzu had no choice but to proceed. As he entered the gold exchange, all the assassins looked at him in awe, impressed by his strength and previous victory against Chiba.
“As expected of Master Kakuzu, your presence is invincible!” they exclaimed.
“I hope I can follow you and benefit from your success,” one assassin added.
Kakuzu’s and the other assassins’ eyes gleamed with determination as they embarked on their mission.
