Chapter 95: The Second Wave Of Assassinations Strikes
Kakuzu never expected his colleagues to gather like this.
“This is simply a stroke of luck,” Kakuzu thought as he stood inside the money exchange, surveying the surrounding assassins.
“Tell me about the ninjutsu attributes you excel in,” Kakuzu casually asked, a sense of pride evident in his voice.
To Kakuzu, these people seemed like a bunch of rubbish, unworthy of being in his presence. Soon, a crowd had formed, each person eager to get a share of the reward. After all, 500 million taels was an irresistible temptation that few could resist.
Finally, Kakuzu selected five suitable counterparts, satisfied with his choices. “I’ve collected five attributes! The hard part is over,” he smirked, applauding his own wit. Now, it was time to deliver.
As Kakuzu prepared to hand over these five individuals to Chiba, the receptionist smiled and presented him with additional information. Curiosity piqued, Kakuzu opened the letter slowly, causing everyone around him to glance over, eager to see what extra news the employer had sent.
To their astonishment, the letter contained the exact location and time of the ambush.
“Does this mean we can set up the ambush in advance?” one exclaimed. The possibilities ran through their minds, realizing they could lay countless traps with ample time.
Regret washed over many as they realized they had missed the opportunity to claim the 500 million tael reward. They hadn’t cherished the chance when it was right in front of them.
The five members of Kakuzu’s team were ecstatic, feeling that victory was within reach. However, Kakuzu’s heart sank as he considered the distribution of the bounty.
“Master Kakuzu, let’s discuss how we’ll split the reward,” one of the team members impatiently suggested.
They knew that even without Kakuzu, the five of them could have completed the mission successfully. But with Kakuzu’s presence and strength, he would undoubtedly claim the lion’s share.
“Do as you wish,” Kakuzu waved his hand dismissively, his mind elsewhere.
His teammates and the surrounding onlookers praised his nonchalant attitude.
“As expected of Master Kakuzu! This kind of assassination is beneath you,” they commented.
Ignoring their remarks, Kakuzu left with his team. They began setting up numerous detonators in advance, and as the soul of the team, Kakuzu couldn’t abandon them.
“Chiba, don’t get yourself killed,” Kakuzu silently wished.
Finally, the ambush was underway. However, the location was less than ideal—a semi-circular dung mountain emitting a repugnant odor.
“Is this the ambush site?” one of the team members questioned.
“A heap of dung?” another echoed.
Realizing Chiba’s ability to control excrement, they deduced that he would be unable to resist investigating. Seizing the opportunity, they buried the detonators within the dung pile.
The five team members acted swiftly, except for Kakuzu, who remained cold and detached.
Meanwhile, Chiba was with the Aburame clan members at a pit in the Konoha Hills. They were observing insects, discussing their ability to track animals through scent.
“How are the insects of the Aburame clan performing? Can they accurately locate every animal?” Chiba inquired.
“You can entrust the task of collecting animals to our family; we’ll handle it properly,” the Aburame patriarch assured, wearing large sunglasses.
Since all the wild boars near the village had been captured, Chiba had turned his attention to other animals. The Aburame patriarch intended to oversee this task as well.
“Alright, I’ll leave the livestock replenishment on the farm to your family,” Chiba agreed before gesturing towards a wooden house. “There’s a deposit inside; take as much as you can.”
The deal was struck, and Chiba left, glancing back to see the Aburame family members frantically running around the wooden house.
“Such naivety,” Chiba sighed, realizing they hadn’t seen much of the world.
Walking through the streets, Chiba noticed people whispering and mentioning feces in their conversations. Intrigued, he listened in.
“Have you heard? There’s a dung mountain twenty miles outside the village.”
“Yes, I’ve heard of it, but it seems to have appeared out of nowhere.”
“I heard some ninjas say that the dung mountain looks suspicious. They advise staying away from it.”
“Who in their right mind would approach that stench? Aren’t they afraid of being suffocated?”
Listening to their discussion, Chiba grew suspicious. A dung mountain twenty miles away from the village seemed like a trap, specifically targeting him. It couldn’t be a mere coincidence.
“I won’t fall for it. Let’s see what you have planned,” Chiba smirked confidently. However, doubt crept in. “If I don’t investigate, I’ll lose any potential leads. I have no choice but to take the initiative.”
Having made up his mind, Chiba prepared to confront the trap head-on.
