Chapter 97: Danzo Is Looking For A Way Out
Sarutobi Hiruzen’s residence.
Sarutobi Hiruzen and Danzo sat across from each other. A chessboard lay between them, its squares intricately arranged.
“Danzo, why the hesitation? Why won’t you make a move?” Sarutobi Hiruzen smiled and spoke lightly.
But Danzo, on the opposite side, remained silent, his mind elsewhere. Danzo was waiting. Sarutobi Hiruzen was also waiting.
They both awaited news from the ANBU. The difference lay in their moods.
“Hiruzen, aren’t you afraid of another failure?” Danzo finally spoke, his tone heavy.
Danzo’s eyelids had been twitching, which unsettled him.
“Hehe~~ Don’t worry! Chiba will definitely meet his end this time,” Sarutobi Hiruzen said confidently, a smile of assurance on his face.
For the “Zero Four Three” wave of assassinations, he had meticulously planned three lines of defense, foolproof in his mind.
First: Kakuzu, a formidable assassin from the black market!
Second: Baki, a Sand Shinobi sealed in the earth!
Third: Anbu operatives waiting in the shadows to strike once Kakuzu and Chiba were weakened!
Even if Chiba were to emerge victorious, Baki would divert his attention to the Sand Shinobi. Sarutobi Hiruzen had carefully designed this chain plan, believing that Chiba could not escape.
“What does it matter if he can fly? When collecting dung, he will inevitably fall to the ground…” Sarutobi Hiruzen’s smile widened, a sense of satisfaction filling him.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Suddenly, a figure rushed in hurriedly.
“Look, the good news is here,” Hiruzen said, a smile on his face.
Danzo turned his head to look as well.
“Lord Hokage! The mission has failed!” the ANBU operative declared as he approached.
Boom!
Hiruzen smashed the chessboard in frustration.
“How did it fail? Wasn’t Kakuzu supposed to have almost killed Chiba last time?” Sarutobi Hiruzen couldn’t comprehend.
His plan had been flawless, yet it had crumbled once again.
“Well… Hiruzen, take care of yourself,” Danzo sighed, turned, and left.
He needed to return to his family and quickly withdraw them. After all, he feared Chiba’s retaliation through his cesspit. Back at his family’s residence, Danzo immediately ordered the clan members to evacuate.
“All clan members, retreat to the Root base,” he commanded.
With a single order, Danzo made the necessary arrangements. He couldn’t control Sarutobi Hiruzen, but he had to safeguard his own people.
“Chiba’s cesspit can flood the entire Sand Shinobi frontline! My family’s stronghold could be turned into a cesspit within minutes,” Danzo knew Chiba all too well.
He regarded him as a vengeful werewolf. Once offended, this kind of person had to be crushed. If they didn’t die, they would smear their own excrement.
In the Land of Fire…
Chiba flew ahead. Kakuzu carried Baki and chased after him.
“We don’t seem to be able to catch up with him,” Baki anxiously remarked to Kakuzu.
Kakuzu simply threw Baki to the ground.
“I’m carrying you, how can I catch up?” Kakuzu replied with indifference, unable to bear the stench on Baki’s body.
He had no intention of pursuing Chiba. If it weren’t for sensing the approaching presence of multiple individuals, he would have brought along a few heads of his teammates to exchange for rewards.
Now, he hadn’t even caught a single hair. Fortunately, he had ingeniously fabricated five hearts. Otherwise, he would have returned empty-handed in this wave.
“Go on your own,” Kakuzu stated, and he departed.
If the mission had failed, he would have to return to the gold exchange and report the outcome.
At the Underground Exchange…
When Kakuzu returned to the gold exchange, he was surprised to find a group of assassins looking at him in awe once again.
“What a shame! I saw Master Kakuzu chasing after Chiba with my own eyes, and now it seems he escaped…” one of the assassins lamented.
“I witnessed it too. Chiba couldn’t defeat Kakuzu and fled like a coward!”
“The one being chased didn’t even dare to return to the village. Chiba actually ran towards the Land of Wind…”
“Hey~~ Such a pity, 500 million gone to waste.”
The assassins around engaged in conversation, expressing their disappointment.
Meanwhile, Kakuzu swelled with pride. At that moment, he even began to believe it himself. Just Chiba, fleeing at the sight of him.
Hum!
“Master Kakuzu! What a pity,” the receptionist still smiled, his tone filled with regret.
“Forget it, I won’t be accepting any missions for a while. I’m not in the mood,” Kakuzu replied indifferently, walking away with an air of invincibility.
“It seems Kakuzu is determined to find a way to counter flying.”
“Most likely.”
“Let’s hope next time he finds a way to achieve a decisive victory~~”
“By the way, how will the reward for the five heads be divided?”
Even after Kakuzu had left, the group of people continued to discuss, as they had picked up the heads of five assassins and were deliberating on how to divide the reward.
“Phew…”
Walking out of the gold exchange, Kakuzu let out a long breath. He was ready to collect his rewards.
“Once I have enough, I’ll head to Chiba for the gold bars…”
Flying southwest all the way, Chiba soon entered the Land of Wind. He flew in a straight line, bypassing the country of Chuan, and headed directly for the Sand Shinobi Village.
“Third Kazekage! Wait for me,” Chiba seethed with anger.
Filled with a sense of injustice, he sought revenge. He considered himself a good man, kind, humble, and sincere. However, there were always those who inexplicably wanted to kill him.
For his own safety on the 3rd of September and to live a carefree life, Chiba decided to seek revenge on the Sand Shinobi Village.
“I don’t want to fight at all. It’s all because of the Third Kazekage’s coercion!”
Gritting his teeth, Chiba’s anger grew more intense.
Half a day later…
Chiba saw it. He saw the familiar earthen walls of the Sand Shinobi Village.
Whoosh!
Flying over the village on a sand platform, Chiba took action immediately. Activating his imitative ability…
Tengai Shinsei!
Boom!
With a deafening sound, the sky darkened abruptly.
In the next moment, a colossal ball of dung, over a kilometer in diameter, materialized beneath the clouds and plummeted straight toward the Sand Shinobi Village.
