- Chapter 106 - The Feeling of Flame Breathing (25)
The afternoon’s rewards were underwhelming compared to the morning’s, consisting only of a couple of ordinary Water and Earth Release techniques.
However, as rewards for four hours of teaching, Mokutsuki thought they were decent.
At night, Mokutsuki continued training Shisui, Obito, and Might Guy in breathing techniques.
The three still hadn’t found the proper feeling for the breathing techniques, remaining stuck in the initial breathing training.
“Remember, it’s about technique. Just taking a deep breath isn’t the breathing technique,” Mokutsuki constantly emphasized.
“Technique, technique, technique…” Obito kept muttering the word, trying to hypnotize himself into breathing with technique.
“If you want to suggest it to yourself, do it in your mind, not out loud,” Mokutsuki said, poking Obito’s abdomen.
Obito gasped in pain, opening his mouth wide.
He had never thought that something as essential as breathing, which everyone is born knowing how to do, could have such a technique and be so difficult to learn.
It was much more complex than techniques like Fire Dragon Flame Bullet or chakra nature transformation.
Even if he failed in practicing the Fire Dragon Flame Bullet, he could at least produce some sparks. And if progress in nature’s transformation was slow, he could still melt the ice a bit with his hands’ warmth.
However, while practicing the breathing technique, Obito felt like he had almost drunk his fill of air but still couldn’t produce any results.
Obito felt that if this continued, he might even make progress in the Fireball Jutsu from breathing practice before learning the breathing technique.
Seeing that Shisui also hadn’t figured it out reassured Obito; if Shisui was struggling, then it must indeed be difficult.
With Obito and Shisui struggling with flame breathing, Might Guy was having even more trouble with the harder rock breathing and was also making no progress.
However, Mokutsuki wasn’t too worried about Might Guy. The rugged and persistent Rock Breathing suited Might Guy well, and as long as he trained as diligently as usual, he would be fine.
On the second day of training in the breathing techniques, all three students still had zero proficiency.
On the third night, one student finally broke through and gained some proficiency. Obito was training in flame breathing.
“Mokutsuki-sensei, I think I feel something different. Does this mean I’ve learned it?” Obito said during practice.
“Not quite learned, but you’ve officially started training in the breathing technique,” Mokutsuki replied, who had been observing from the side. He used his appraisal technique to check Obito’s proficiency and saw it was no longer zero.
He had thought Shisui would be the first to break through, but it turned out to be Obito.
Mokutsuki figured it might be because Obito’s personality was more suited to Flame Breathing, allowing him to catch on first.
Flame Breathing was suitable for those with passionate, fiery hearts. Shisui wasn’t introverted, but he wasn’t precisely fiery either.
“Keep this feeling and delve deeper. Once you get familiar with it, you can move on to the next training stage,” Mokutsuki nodded.
This essential breathing practice was just the entry point. There were many more training stages to follow.
The next stage involved adjusting body posture to guide breathing, achieving different enhancement effects.
In the original breathing techniques, this stage involved training different breathing styles with a sword. After localization, without the need for a sword, it became about various enhancement effects.
For beginners, specific postures were needed to guide the breathing, but once mastered, they could control it freely within their bodies.
“Finally, I can start formal training,” Obito couldn’t help but celebrate, pumping his fist after three days of fruitless effort.
Whack!
Mokutsuki knocked on Obito’s head with two fingers and pointed to Shisui, who was still training. “Don’t disturb others’ training. Focus on getting familiar with this feeling.”
Obito shut his mouth and nodded, resuming his practice with a satisfied smile.
With talent comparable to Kakashi’s, he had learned before Shisui, which was a small victory in his mind.
By the end of the third day’s training, Shisui and Might Guy had made no progress, but Obito had found a bit of the right feeling.
On Wednesday, during training, Shisui kept doing various exercises and thinking about breathing techniques.
It was the first time he felt clueless about something.
During a break, Shisui saw Obito and Asuma bragging to each other about their Fire Release techniques. He walked over to Obito and asked, “Obito, can you describe that breathing feeling in detail?”
Obito thought for a moment and then described, “It’s like eating a bowl of hot ramen, with a warm current flowing through your whole body…”
Obito tried his best to explain his sensation, even using gestures to illustrate.
“A warm current…” Shisui thought deeply.
Nearby, Asuma was baffled, feeling that their conversation made no sense, especially Obito, who seemed to be talking nonsense.
Asuma ignored the strange conversation and, seeing Kurenai training, again joined her.
Shisui kept thinking about Obito’s answer, trying to gain some insight from it. During dinner at home, he even considered eating ramen.
“Shisui, sometimes my feet hurt when using the Body Flicker Technique. Why is that?” Uchiha Tetsuka asked upon seeing Shisui.
“Didn’t feel the warm current,” Shisui replied absentmindedly.
While Tetsuka was confused, Shisui corrected himself, “It should be because you didn’t control the chakra in your feet properly, causing injury.”
“Oh, I see. What were you thinking about earlier? I called you twice before you answered,” Tetsuka asked curiously.
“Thinking about training,” Shisui replied.
“No wonder even graduate Genin can’t match you. You’re always thinking about training,” Tetsuka admired.
He felt a bit ashamed, as he was now the weakest among the Uchiha in Group A. Shisui and Obito were the top two, while he was eliminated in the third round of the strength test.
Shisui didn’t respond, thinking Tetsuka might have misunderstood. Even Might Guy didn’t know about training all the time, but Shisui was preoccupied with the breathing technique’s lack of progress.
He didn’t bother to explain. After dinner, Shisui went to Mokutsuki for more guidance on the breathing technique.
By the end of the fourth day of training, the situation was similar to the third day, with only Obito making some progress.
On the fifth day, there was a new development: Shisui also gained some proficiency in Flame Breathing.
“The warm current from eating hot ramen…” Shisui found Obito’s description unexpectedly apt. He felt a warm current flowing from his mouth, moving through his chakra pathways.
By the end of the fifth day, only Might Guy had yet to gain any proficiency in the breathing technique, still diligently searching for the right feeling.
