- Chapter 109 - Rapidly Increasing Proficiency
Kakashi was nearby shopping when he saw the scene. He arrived just as Might Guy was half-kneeling on the ground, and just as he was about to step in, Might Guy exploded with power and instantly took down the two ninjas.
The sudden burst of strength from Might Guy left Kakashi baffled. Now he truly believed what his father had said before—Might Guy would indeed become his rival, perhaps even surpassing him.
“Of course, because I’m the hardworking genius recognized by Mokutsuki-sensei!” Might Guy said, giving a thumbs-up with a bright smile, his shining white teeth gleaming.
As soon as he finished speaking, Might Guy’s body gave out, and he fell backward, exhausted from the burst of energy.
Kakashi quickly caught him.
“Next time, remember to save enough strength to walk home, or your father will worry,” Kakashi said, lifting Might Guy onto his back and heading towards his house.
“Haha, isn’t that what friends are for?” Might Guy laughed.
“I’m not always around,” Kakashi said, exasperated.
After delivering Might Guy to his doorstep and watching Might Dai take him inside, Kakashi turned and left.
Today, Might Guy had truly surprised him.
Kakashi couldn’t figure out how Might Guy managed to unleash such powerful kicks at the end when he should have been out of energy.
“Hatake, the teacher said we have a mission tomorrow. Don’t be late.”
On his way home, Kakashi ran into two of his teammates who were looking for him.
“Hmm.” Kakashi nodded coldly, not saying another word as he walked straight towards his house.
“He’s so cold. You’d think we owed him money,” one teammate complained.
“He never joins group training and never practices teamwork, but he’s so eager for missions.”
“He’s a genius ninja, so just let it go.”
…
Despite being exhausted, Might Guy went to Mokutsuki’s place after dinner.
He went every day, and suddenly, not going might make Mokutsuki worry. Besides, he needed to report on his breathing technique progress.
“Mokutsuki-sensei, I entered a strange state during a fight today. My strength and speed increased, and my exhausted legs felt rejuvenated,” Might Guy told Mokutsuki about his afternoon fight.
He tried to downplay the fight, not mentioning how he was too tired to walk afterward.
Mokutsuki checked Might Guy’s breathing technique proficiency.
Skill: Rock Breathing (Not Mastered: 17/100)
Mokutsuki was astonished. Yesterday, Might Guy’s proficiency was zero, and today, it had jumped to seventeen.
Yesterday, Obito had the highest proficiency at six points. Might Guy had nearly tripled that in one day.
Analyzing Might Guy’s words, Mokutsuki deduced that the critical situation, combined with Guy’s suitability for Rock Breathing, had triggered his potential, leading to a sudden surge in proficiency.
“Don’t train today. Just sit and watch Obito and Shisui practice,” Mokutsuki said.
Might Guy nod without arguing?
While teaching Obito and Shisui, Mokutsuki shared the good news with them.
“Guy is now leading in breathing technique progress. He can already use it to strengthen himself,” Mokutsuki said.
“What? Yesterday, he couldn’t even feel it, and today he’s this much stronger?” Obito was shocked.
He knew how difficult it was to train in the breathing technique. Mokutsuki had said Rock Breathing was harder than Flame Breathing, and Obito couldn’t understand how Guy had progressed so quickly in one day. It felt like Guy was cheating.
“Keep training. You’ll have your breakthrough moment too,” Mokutsuki said with a smile.
Obito had good potential for Flame Breathing. If not for Guy’s sudden epiphany, Obito would have likely been the first to master it.
Mokutsuki believed Obito would still be the first to master a breathing technique fully. Epiphanies weren’t everyday occurrences, and because Rock Breathing was difficult, Guy would need continuous hard work to increase his proficiency.
But it was much better now. Breaking through the initial barrier was crucial.
Hearing about Guy’s rapid progress put pressure on Obito. With only two days left until the final test, Obito realized his top-two position was no longer secure.
“Mokutsuki-sensei, please grant me a breakthrough too,” Obito prayed silently, hands clasped.
“Wrong posture!” Mokutsuki corrected Obito’s hands.
Obito’s prayer was interrupted by Mokutsuki himself.
With his prayer failing, Obito returned to training, repeatedly practicing different breathing techniques and sensing the subtle changes in his body.
…
On Thursday, Mokutsuki continued his regular teaching.
With the special training nearing its end, Mokutsuki would pep up the students at the start of each class.
The unique training was almost over, and the enhancement reward hadn’t been triggered. Mokutsuki felt the students could push a little more in the final two days.
Most of the training goals that Mokutsuki had set had already been achieved.
Group A members, except for a few new additions, had basically completed Body Flicker training. How well they used it varied, but they had all learned it.
Group B members had mostly finished tree climbing and water walking practice, significantly improving their chakra control and basic techniques.
If only considering the initial Group B members, their average ninjutsu scores had improved from around seven to over nine.
The lower-grade outstanding students had also made great strides during the five weeks of special training, and they were ready to surprise their classmates when school resumed.
“Only two days left. Train hard. The Third Hokage will come to see your progress in the final test. Show him the results of your hard work,” Mokutsuki encouraged.
“The time has come to truly make a name for ourselves,” Kotetsu Hagane and Izumo Kamizuki exchanged determined looks, ready to refine their jutsu and impress.
“Are there dango rewards for doing well?” Anko Mitarashi just wanted to be rewarded with a dango.
“I don’t see what’s exciting about an old man coming,” Asuma Sarutobi grumbled.
Among the three hundred students, perhaps some weren’t interested in the Third Hokage, but Asuma was probably the only one openly resentful.
“The Third Hokage…” Shisui thought about the history lessons Mokutsuki had taught.
