“Mokutsuki-sensei, I think I feel a bit of a bulge in my abdomen. Could my posture be perfect now, with the airflow swirling through my pathways and nodes?” Obito asked excitedly.
“I think you might have just eaten too much dinner,” Mokutsuki replied after noticing that Obito’s posture was off during his breathing exercises.
“Uh, maybe I did eat a bit too much,” Obito said, his face turning slightly red as he rubbed his slightly protruding belly with an embarrassed smile.
Hearing this somewhat ridiculous conversation, Shisui couldn’t help but laugh, causing his breathing rhythm to falter.
“You need to control the air entering your body, not let the air control your body’s posture,” Mokutsuki said, handing Obito a correction of posture.
“Shisui is doing this part well,” Mokutsuki pointed to Shisui, who had already recovered and resumed his correct posture.
Overall, Shisui’s progress wasn’t as fast as Obito’s, but he was quicker in this aspect of training.
“Mokutsuki-sensei, maybe you could tie me up to keep my posture fixed. That way, I could guide the air better,” Obito suddenly suggested, thinking he had found a good idea.
The breathing technique’s strengthening postures were all difficult, and not only did the airflow affect them, but maintaining such high-difficulty postures for a long time was also physically exhausting.
Mokutsuki wasn’t sure if Obito was overly eager to train or had developed some strange fetish, wanting to be physically restrained.
He had considered this method himself, but physically fixing someone in place might not be effective and would undoubtedly be uncomfortable.
Anyone unaware of the training might mistake it for the interrogation of a foreign spy.
“This method might work, but the training process will be very uncomfortable. Are you sure you want to try it?” Mokutsuki asked.
Since Obito volunteered, Mokutsuki didn’t oppose it.
Training to be a ninja was never easy.
Every day, they trained their bodies until they were drenched in sweat; falling from tree climbing was painful, failing water walking meant falling into the water, and practicing Fire Release chakra nature transformation without caution could cause burns.
“Let’s try it. Holding these postures is pretty uncomfortable anyway,” Obito nodded, wanting to see if he could speed up his progress with this trick.
With only five weeks of special training, despite earlier promises of bi-weekly strength tests, the final combat test was three weeks apart.
Obito had finally managed to beat Might Guy once and saw the light of consecutive wins with the breathing technique training. He didn’t want Might Guy to surpass him again so soon.
In the two previous ninja academy combat tests, class, and grade levels, Might Guy had beaten him four times, while Obito had only won once.
Mokutsuki obliged Obito’s request, fetching some planks and ropes to tie Obito into a fixed posture.
However, Mokutsuki didn’t tie him too tightly, as too tight would affect blood circulation. He reminded Obito, “The ropes aren’t tight; they’re just an aid. You still need to guide the air yourself, not just rely on being fixed in place.”
Obito nodded and began training earnestly.
After a while, Obito found that it helped, although being bound was a bit uncomfortable.
Practicing one posture, he had Mokutsuki’s shadow clone help him switch to another. After an hour of training, Obito even felt it was pretty beneficial.
Whenever his posture was off, he’d feel the slack in the ropes and immediately correct himself.
When the training session was nearly over, Mokutsuki brought Might Guy over to join Obito and Shisui.
“Guy, use the breathing technique and perform taijutsu,” Mokutsuki instructed.
Might Guy nodded, adjusted his breathing rhythm, and inhaled deeply, enhancing his strength.
“Leaf Great Whirlwind!”
Might Guy target the thickest tree nearby, one that three people might struggle to wrap their arms around? With a burst of chakra, he flickered and kicked it.
Crack!
With a loud crash, the tree fell, and the spot where Might Guy kicked it was reduced to splinters.
“His speed and strength have increased so much!” Obito exclaimed in surprise, having often sparred with Might Guy.
Might Guy’s whirlwind kick brought out a gust of wind, flattening the surrounding grass.
“If you continue training, you’ll soon be able to use the breathing technique in battle too,” Mokutsuki said to Shisui and Obito with a smile.
The breathing technique was challenging to master, but it was essential to give them hope. With Might Guy as the current benchmark, they had something to aim for.
“One more thing, during the final combat test the day after tomorrow, you are not to use the breathing technique,” Mokutsuki added.
“Why?” Obito asked, puzzled.
Currently, only Might Guy could use the breathing technique in battle, so wasn’t this limiting Might Guy’s strength?
While it was good news for him, Obito was confused. This wasn’t some training competition; there was no need to level the playing field. If so, they’d have to ban a lot of Shisui’s ninjutsu and genjutsu too.
“You’re just starting out and can’t control the technique well. Using it in combat could overstrain your bodies, causing hidden injuries,” Mokutsuki explained.
This was one reason. The real reason was that the Third Hokage would be watching.
The Third Hokage was different from other ninjas; he knew many techniques and secrets. Might Guy and the others were young and inexperienced, so a sudden display of such power could easily draw suspicion.
If only one of them showed such power, it might be overlooked. However, if Obito also used the breathing technique, it would definitely raise questions.
So, Mokutsuki decided none of them should use the breathing technique.
Using Soru was fine, as its speed, though fast, appeared similar to normal taijutsu and the Body Flicker Technique.
Since Obito and the others were more muscular, their Body Flicker Technique would naturally be faster, which was reasonable.
“After using the breathing technique the other day, I thought my legs had recovered, but once I stopped, the fatigue hit all at once,” Might Guy nodded, agreeing with Mokutsuki.
Obito looked enlightened.
…
On Saturday, all the students gathered at the training ground, ready for the final combat test.
As promised, Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, arrived, and he wasn’t alone. He brought several teachers along to observe the special training.
“The students look spirited and confident,” Hiruzen Sarutobi said with a smile, dressed in his white robes and Hokage hat.
“Let’s see the results of their five weeks of hard work.”
