- Chapter 114 - The Quick Slap in the Face
Ikeda Yu finally saw his outstanding student, Uchiha Obito, and smiled as he said, “Obito is one of my students. He was already ranked second in the fourth year before the special training. I wonder how much he has improved under Mokutsuki-sensei’s guidance.”
“I’ve seen Uchiha Obito fight. He indeed has great potential,” another teacher acknowledged.
“Uchiha Obito is strong, no doubt, but his opponent is even stronger. Asuma Sarutobi, though he only graduated this year, maintained the top rank in his grade throughout his time at the academy,” Kimura Sanjin added.
Having witnessed Obito’s rise from being at the bottom of the class, Kimura Sanjin still didn’t think Obito would win because his opponent was the son of the Third Hokage.
Obito had achieved second place in his grade, but Asuma had consistently held the top position.
Even Ikeda Yu had to nod in agreement, acknowledging that Asuma had a better chance of winning.
The teachers who had taught Asuma began to praise his performance at the academy, almost equating him with prodigies like Shisui and Kakashi.
The Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, maintained a cheerful expression but didn’t take the teachers’ praise seriously. He knew his son’s capabilities well enough. Asuma’s performance was good, but comparing him to Shisui or Kakashi was a stretch.
Ignoring the teachers’ discussion, Hiruzen focused on the upcoming match. After all, it was his son’s battle.
“Obito, how are you feeling today?” Asuma asked as they formed the sign of confrontation.
“Feeling great. Slept well last night. Why? Even with your father here, I won’t hold back,” Obito replied with a confident smile.
“I don’t need you to hold back. Give it your all,” Asuma answered.
Though fighting Obito was tough, it allowed Asuma to showcase his full strength. Both had decent fire-style jutsu, taijutsu, and other skills.
Last time, Asuma had lost to Obito because he underestimated him and got caught off guard by Obito’s improved taijutsu.
“Begin!” Mokutsuki announced as the two stood ready.
In a flash, both used the Body Flicker Technique and disappeared from their spots, leaving a flurry of shuriken in their wake.
Neither hit their mark, and they quickly engaged in close combat, exchanging blows rapidly.
Hiruzen Sarutobi watched Asuma’s performance and nodded in approval. Asuma’s taijutsu had improved significantly, making him look more like a competent ninja.
Seeing that Obito was holding his own in taijutsu, Kimura Sanjin was surprised, saying, “Uchiha Obito has improved again!”
In the last grade exam, Obito only showed proficiency in body movements. Now, his close combat skills had significantly advanced.
What surprised Kimura Sanjin even more was that Asuma was gradually falling behind. Obito’s mastery of the advanced Body Flicker Technique allowed him to capitalize on any slight opening.
Mokutsuki couldn’t help but think that the local version of the Body Flicker Technique was an excellent move. Though it consumed more chakra and caused fatigue faster, these weren’t flaws of the technique but instead of the user. A strong enough body would handle it just fine.
Despite Asuma’s rich combat experience preventing Obito from entirely dominating, the tide was turning. After another intense exchange, both used fire-style jutsu.
“Fire Style: Great Fireball Jutsu!” Obito shouted, sending a massive fireball toward Asuma.
“Fire Style: Great Flame Technique!” Asuma countered with a stream of intense flames.
The two flames clashed, each trying to overpower the other. But Obito’s fireball gradually pushed Asuma’s flames back.
Unable to match Obito’s fireball, Asuma had to dodge swiftly.
Obito seized the moment, using the advanced Body Flicker Technique to attack the evading Asuma.
“He lost,” Hiruzen Sarutobi said, shaking his head. He had already seen the outcome.
From his perspective, Asuma made too many unnecessary mistakes. With a speed disadvantage, he shouldn’t have continued to engage directly but should have thought of a strategy. His decision to clash with fire-style jutsu was a crucial error.
If Hiruzen were at Asuma’s level, he could think of over a hundred ways to defeat Obito.
Nonetheless, Hiruzen wasn’t entirely critical. Asuma had indeed made significant progress. Previously, he would have lost in the taijutsu phase.
As Hiruzen predicted, despite Asuma’s efforts, he couldn’t withstand Obito’s relentless attacks.
“Uchiha Obito wins!”
“Impossible! Asuma lost…” The teachers were stunned, feeling embarrassed. They had just been praising Asuma, and now he had lost to a student. It was a clear slap in the face.
“Uchiha Obito is quite impressive. If he maintains this progress, he will become an excellent ninja,” the Third Hokage commented with a smile.
“You’re right, Lord Hokage. I have high hopes for Obito,” Ikeda Yu said, suddenly feeling more confident.
“Contestant 21, Ebisu, and Contestant 22, Genma Shiranui, prepare for battle.”
Hearing Ebisu’s name, the teachers recalled the unforgettable scene from Group C.
“Isn’t this the most creative student?” a Chunin teacher joked with the homeroom teacher of Class 6, Year 4.
The Third Hokage also grew interested, looking toward the battlefield to see what was special about Ebisu, who had led the development of that technique.
Feeling the attention, Ebisu was excited. This was his chance to shine. Though his strength was inferior to Genma Shiranui’s, he showcased all his skills, losing only narrowly in the end.
Ebisu’s battle left many teachers disappointed, not because it wasn’t exciting but because it didn’t match their expectations.
The homeroom teacher of Class 6, Year 4, quietly left the group of teachers, his face dark as he went to scold Ebisu.
Ebisu felt confused. Although he had lost, he thought he had performed well. He and Genma Shiranui were classmates, and he often lost to him. Losing now seemed normal.
The Third Hokage and the teachers stayed at the training ground until all the battles ended. They spent more time watching Group A but also checked on the other groups.
The more they watched, the more surprised they were. Many of the students they had taught had become much more robust in just over a month. Some were almost unrecognizable in terms of their improvement.
