- Chapter 118 - The Start of a New Semester
Early the following day, Mokutsuki sensed some movement and immediately used his sensory technique, detecting a person with a significant amount of chakra entering his courtyard.
Calmly getting up, Mokutsuki walked outside and saw a masked ninja wearing a Root uniform.
“New orders from the organization,” the Root ninja said coldly, handing two scrolls to Mokutsuki.
After completing his task, the Root ninja disappeared without a second’s delay.
Name: Yamanka Ryuya
Chakra: 6400
Skills: Mind Transfer Jutsu (Proficient: 2800/3000)…
Evaluation: A competent support-type Jonin.
Mokutsuki’s prowess now far surpassed that of the Root Jonin, who once made him uneasy. His chakra was more than double that of Yamanka Ryuya, and he possessed multiple skills at the proficient level, whereas Ryuya had none at that level.
“There’s no point in comparing myself to ordinary Root Jonin. I wonder what Danzo’s abilities are like,” Mokutsuki thought to himself.
If this world were like a cultivation world where Genin, Chunin, and Jonin represented cultivation levels, Mokutsuki believed Danzo would be at the Kage level, though not as strong as powerful Kage like Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Raikage, or Onoki.
Mokutsuki opened the scrolls. The first contained Danzo’s latest orders.
Danzo expressed satisfaction with Mokutsuki’s promotion to Special Jonin but warned him not to reveal his identity as a Root member and to continue diligently executing his missions.
Mokutsuki summarized the valuable parts, discarding the brainwashing rhetoric. He could sense Danzo’s surprise and delight at his accomplishments. Danzo likely viewed his assignment to the Ninja Academy as a minor move, considering the original host’s lack of exceptional talent.
The second scroll contained Danzo’s reward for him—training elixirs. Mokutsuki burned the mission scroll and stored the elixirs away, not daring to use them due to distrust, though he kept them for their potential value.
Today was Sunday, and with the summer training program just ending yesterday, Mokutsuki gave the students a half-day off. They only needed to train in the morning, leaving the afternoon free, which suited him as he needed to tutor Asuma in the afternoon.
“Where should we go play this afternoon?” Obito pondered before training even started, already planning an outing with Rin.
“Sorry, Obito. I need to stay home and study medical jutsu,” Rin apologized.
Recently, she has been focused on learning medical ninjutsu and doesn’t have time for leisure activities with Obito.
“Obito, you could hang out with Kakashi,” Rin suggested.
“Actually, I feel like I’m getting closer to sensing the energy inside my body clearly. Maybe my Flame Breathing is about to break through. I should focus on training this afternoon,” Obito decided after some thought.
He wouldn’t seek out Kakashi unless he had something worth boasting about. Until then, serious training was the best option.
“Training is good too. We’ll be graduating soon and becoming real ninja,” Rin said with a warm smile.
With only two semesters left, including the vacation, they had about seven months until graduation.
“Ninja, huh? I’m excited. We’ll be able to do missions and earn money. I won’t have to rely on my grandma’s allowance anymore and can even buy her gifts,” Obito said, dreaming about his future as a ninja.
“To earn money, you need strength. The higher the pay, the tougher the mission,” Mokutsuki reminded, snapping Obito out of his daydreams.
Being a ninja was indeed a quick way to earn money. Excluding S-rank missions, which ordinary ninjas couldn’t access, D, C, and B-rank missions already offered substantial rewards.
D-rank missions ranged from 5,000 to 50,000 ry?, C-rank from 30,000 to 100,000 ry?, and B-rank missions could offer up to 200,000 ry?.
This was why capable ninjas wouldn’t choose to be Chunin instructors. A month’s salary was 100,000 ry?, and completing a couple of C-rank missions would exceed that. Not every C-rank mission faced Jonin-level threats; typically, they didn’t involve ninja adversaries unless the mission was upgraded to B-rank or higher.
However, ninjas earned money quickly and spent it just as fast. Quality shuriken and kunai weren’t cheap, and more advanced tools like explosive tags were even pricier. Training elixirs were also very expensive. Living on a fixed monthly salary of 100,000 ry? wouldn’t afford them the means to continue getting stronger.
For those looking to settle down, being a ninja school instructor was a good choice. Without the stress of constant missions, they could enjoy their monthly salary, bonuses for good class performance, and a more relaxed life.
Obito chuckled and resumed his Flame Breathing training for the day.
In the afternoon, Mokutsuki went to Hiruzen Sarutobi’s house, as usual, to tutor Asuma.
Noticing Asuma’s low spirits, Mokutsuki gently inquired about the cause.
Since it was Mokutsuki asking, Asuma shared the events of the previous day, and his emotions grew more intense as he spoke.
“He always sees me as useless. Whenever I ask him about my performance, it’s never good enough. It’s always about my mistakes, never a word of approval. Was my performance in that fight really that terrible?” Asuma’s voice choked with emotion, his eyes misting over.
Mokutsuki could tell that Asuma still cared deeply for Hiruzen. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be so affected.
“Don’t worry about it. You did your best in that fight. It’s just that Obito was stronger,” Mokutsuki reassured, patting Asuma’s head.
He understood Asuma’s feelings well. In his previous life, Mokutsuki’s parents had been extremely strict about his grades.
In elementary and middle school, Mokutsuki often scored high in math and language arts, even achieving perfect scores in math frequently. However, his parents attributed perfect scores to easy exams or lenient grading rather than his abilities. Conversely, if he didn’t achieve perfect scores, they blamed him for not studying hard enough.
Over time, Mokutsuki lost confidence in himself, eventually giving up for two years before a sudden realization in his second year of high school.
It wasn’t that his parents didn’t want the best for him; he knew they loved him. They were just harsh in their approach, fearing he would become complacent and wanting to keep him humble and motivated.
“If you can see it, why can’t he, the Hokage?” Asuma’s resentment remained.
Thanks to Mokutsuki’s strong rapport with Asuma, he managed to calm him down, saying things like how Hiruzen was waiting for him as a father.
After an afternoon of training, Asuma’s mood visibly improved.
“Hiruzen Sarutobi, you better not let me down,” Mokutsuki thought. As a tutor, he went above and beyond to maintain family harmony.
On Monday, Mokutsuki attended the teachers’ meeting at the ninja academy.
