That evening, Mokutsuki didn’t go to Konoha’s central district but stayed in his cabin in the Southern Forest to study sealing techniques.
Sensing someone rushing nearby, Mokutsuki temporarily set aside his training and went outside.
“Yoru, Lord Danzo has something to discuss with you,” the Root ninja said coldly.
“Do I need to change into my uniform?” Mokutsuki asked.
Although he wasn’t an official member of Root, he still had the uniform and mask.
“No need, follow me directly,” the Root ninja shook his head.
Mokutsuki silently followed the Root ninja, having a vague idea of what was happening.
A few days ago, they had warned him not to reveal his identity, and now they wanted him to go to the Root base openly. Obviously, his identity no longer needed to be hidden.
As expected, there must have been a confrontation in the Hokage’s office yesterday or today.
Although he was going to the Root headquarters, Mokutsuki didn’t feel overly anxious.
A few days ago, he reported his status to Danzo, detailing the rewards given by the Third Hokage and showcasing his loyalty.
Now, he was registered under both the Third Hokage and Root, maintaining an image of steadfast loyalty on both sides.
“Lord Danzo,” Mokutsuki greeted Danzo with respect upon reaching the Root base.
“Yoru, you are very talented,” Danzo said suddenly.
“It’s all thanks to your training, Lord Danzo. Without your guidance, I would just be an ordinary orphan,” Mokutsuki replied respectfully.
“Do you know that the Third Hokage values you highly?” Danzo continued.
“Perhaps. On the day the training ended, he praised me several times and gave me two jutsu and 300,000 ryo,” Mokutsuki said, following the report he had submitted earlier.
“Also, today I was promoted to Grade 1 Head Teacher at the ninja school, likely due to the Third Hokage’s recommendation,” Mokutsuki added.
Danzo nodded, deep in thought.
Danzo was probing to see if Mokutsuki knew about the Third Hokage’s intention to take him.
After some probing, combined with Mokutsuki’s earlier report and confidence in his brainwashing techniques, Danzo was temporarily convinced of Mokutsuki’s loyalty.
“I discussed with the Third Hokage and concluded that your talents are better suited for training ninjas at the academy, rather than staying in Root,” Danzo said after some thought.
“Tomorrow, I will go to the Hokage building to remove the Root seal from you. From then on, you will no longer be a member of Root.”
“Lord Danzo, have I done something wrong? Why am I being expelled from Root?” Mokutsuki asked with a face full of fear.
“Lord Danzo, I want to stay with you and protect Konoha!”
Inside, Mokutsuki was extremely calm. He didn’t believe Danzo’s words for a second. It was likely the Third Hokage had forcibly taken him.
Since Danzo wanted to act, Mokutsuki decided to play along.
Danzo was the kind leader who let go of his subordinates for their potential, and Mokutsuki was the loyal subordinate who remained dedicated to Root.
Seeing Mokutsuki’s performance, Danzo nodded in satisfaction. Regardless, Mokutsuki was loyal to Root and Shimura Danzo.
“No, you’ve done very well, but now you have a more important task,” Danzo said slowly.
“Although you will no longer be a member of Root, if my orders reach you one day, will you still carry them out?”
“Of course, Lord Danzo’s tasks are always crucial for protecting Konoha,” Mokutsuki replied without hesitation.
Danzo smiled and handed Mokutsuki two scrolls.
“One contains an advanced Fire Release jutsu, the other is a training elixir. Continue to work hard. When I need you, I will call upon you,” Danzo said.
Danzo wasn’t worried about losing his investment. Even if Mokutsuki’s loyalty wavered, Danzo had ways to ensure it.
“Thank you, Lord Danzo. I will not let you down,” Mokutsuki said with a look of gratitude.
“If there were more ninjas like you in Root, I wouldn’t worry about Konoha’s protection,” Danzo said with satisfaction.
“You may go now. Continue your training and await my summons.”
Mokutsuki left with a look of reluctance, giving Danzo a final assessment before departing.
Name: Shimura Danzo
Chakra: 69,000
Skills: Wind Release Chakra Nature Transformation (Proficient: 5000/15000), Wind Release: Vacuum Wave (Proficient: 2100/15000)…
Potential: S (Basic talent + Sharingan)
Just as he thought, Danzo had Kage-level strength, though not exceptionally high within that tier.
Compared to his old classmate Hiruzen Sarutobi, Danzo’s stats were significantly lower. Hiruzen’s chakra was more than ten thousand higher, and his skills were more developed, with all five fundamental nature transformations at a proficient level. Danzo, on the other hand, primarily had Wind Release.
Still, Mokutsuki didn’t underestimate Danzo. Despite lacking many proficient jutsu, Danzo knew numerous forbidden techniques, making him a formidable opponent. His fight with Mangekyo Sharingan Sasuke showed how challenging he could be without Tobi’s help.
As he left the Root base, Mokutsuki’s expression gradually returned to normal.
“Even when the Third Hokage demands it, you’re reluctant to let go. Being overly persistent is truly frustrating,” Mokutsuki muttered.
He genuinely wanted to develop peacefully, contributing positively once he had enough strength.
But Danzo seemed determined to make things difficult for him, with sudden appearances of Root members in his yard and summoning him to the base despite being released.
Mokutsuki was thoroughly displeased with Danzo and Root, and even with this dangerous, chaotic world.
If one day his strength allowed it, Mokutsuki wouldn’t mind standing above it all, bringing some semblance of normalcy to this world.
Returning home, Mokutsuki checked the scrolls given by Danzo. He saw that the advanced Fire Release jutsu was one he already knew, Fire Dragon Flame Bullet, and lost interest. As for the training elixir, he didn’t bother looking at it and tossed it aside.
Mokutsuki resumed his study of sealing techniques, determined to continue. Danzo seemed to want him as a plant in the Third Hokage’s inner circle.
Thus, the study of sealing techniques couldn’t stop. One day, Danzo might try to place another curse mark on him. Mokutsuki doubted it would be right after the removal, as that would be too obvious to Hiruzen.
“Finally mastered it,” Mokutsuki thought, pleased with mastering the Five Elements Seal, then immediately used a proficiency scroll on it, gaining a wealth of sealing knowledge.
In a world where strength ruled, only one’s power could be trusted.
