- Chapter 124 - Disagreement on the Task (3k)
After two and a half days of training, Obito finally mastered the Shadow Clone Technique on the afternoon of the third day.
“Shadow Clone Technique!” Obito formed the hand seals and gathered his chakra.
Poof!
A puff of white smoke appeared, and an exact copy of Obito stood beside him, neither fatter, thinner, nor shorter.
“Finally, success!” Obito cheered with delight.
He could already imagine how fantastic his future would be: a shadow clone going to school, another doing his homework, one working, and the real him playing with Rin… No, that had to be the real him.
“That’s great,” Guy muttered, dispelling his shadow clone, which had skin the same color as rocks.
He also wanted to send a shadow clone to school.
“From now on, you’ll go to school, and you’ll also do the homework,” Obito happily instructed his clone.
However, the shadow clone gave an unexpected reply.
“Why should I go to school?” the shadow clone asked.
The question left Obito speechless. After thinking for a moment, he replied, “Because you’re my shadow clone.”
“You’re Uchiha Obito, and I’m Uchiha Obito too. Why can’t you go to school and do the homework?” the shadow clone argued reasonably.
“Because… because…” Obito scratched his head, finding the shadow clone’s logic quite sound.
“How about I eat Sensei Mokutsuki’s meals from now on? You’ll get the delicious memories and won’t have to worry about getting fat,” the shadow clone suggested.
“I can also play with Rin for you, so you’ll have more time to train.”
“No way, absolutely not!” Obito shook his head vigorously.
“Why does this shadow clone only think about eating and playing?” Obito suddenly realized a problem.
“You also think about dumping the tedious tasks on me while you eat and play,” the shadow clone retorted.
Obito had no answer to that and promptly dispelled the clone.
“Sensei Mokutsuki, have I really mastered the Shadow Clone Technique?” Obito asked in confusion, feeling something was off with his shadow clone.
Mokutsuki used his identification skills to check Obito. The Shadow Clone Technique had indeed been mastered.
“You’ve learned it. There’s no need to keep practicing this jutsu,” Mokutsuki confirmed.
“But I feel like I haven’t learned it properly. The shadow clone seems off,” Obito insisted.
“The shadow clone’s thoughts are the same as the original,” Mokutsuki explained tactfully.
The ninja world was vast entire of talent. Arguing with one’s shadow clone was not unheard of. There would even be a ninja in the future who would fight with his shadow clone.
“Hehe, I’ll start practicing the breathing technique now,” Obito said sheepishly, realizing Mokutsuki’s point.
If the original wants to be lazy, the clone will too.
Obito’s opinion of the Second Hokage dropped slightly. Though the technique was good, some issues were overlooked.
A fulfilling life always flies by quickly, and soon, it was the day before the new term began.
“Everyone, take a rest tomorrow. Play if you want to, or lie in the yard and think about life if you don’t. After today, there won’t be much time to rest. Of course, if you really want to train, you can come here. I’ll be training,” Mokutsuki announced.
“Rin, let’s go play tomorrow!” Obito decided to rest, given Mokutsuki’s strong recommendation.
“Okay,” Rin agreed.
Having already declined once before, and considering it was the last day before school, she thought it was an excellent time to relax.
“Then let’s find Kakashi tomorrow morning and invite him,” Rin suggested.
Obito’s joy lessened a bit. He had hoped it would be just the two of them, but since Rin wanted to invite Kakashi, Obito turned to Guy.
“Guy, do you want to join us?”
“No, I’ll be training Earth Breathing tomorrow,” Guy refused.
From learning the Shadow Clone Technique, it was clear Guy had only Earth Breathing on his mind.
“Shisui, what about you?” Obito asked.
“Have fun. I’m still behind on my Flame Breathing progress. I’ll train all day tomorrow,” Shisui replied.
Though Shisui had been ahead in various trainings, his breathing technique progress was currently the slowest. He wanted to train more to catch up with Obito.
Obito’s excitement diminished further.
It felt like suggesting a dorm outing where only two people agreed while the other two stayed back to study. How could he enjoy playing?
“It’s just one day. Training more won’t make a big difference,” Obito consoled himself.
The following day, Rin and Obito met at the agreed spot and headed to Kakashi’s house.
They were in luck. Kakashi wasn’t on a mission but sitting at home lost in thought.
“Kakashi, want to hang out with us?” Rin asked with a smile.
“Obito and I start school tomorrow, and we won’t have much free time.”
“Isn’t ninja school pretty easy?” Kakashi asked, puzzled. He remembered his school days as quite relaxed.
“That’s because you were so skilled,” Rin praised.
“Alright, let’s go,” Kakashi agreed, having nothing better to do.
Seeing Kakashi agree, Obito’s joy faded again.
“Curse you, Kakashi, slacking off as a ninja!” Obito grumbled softly, head down.
“Obito, you should…”
Bam!
Before Rin could finish, Obito, not watching where he was going, walked straight into a utility pole.
“Curse you, Kakashi! Can’t you put this pole somewhere people won’t walk into it?” It was his second time hitting it, and he thought the pole was poorly placed.
Kakashi: …
“If such a place existed, I’d first help you find your brain and eyes,” Kakashi retorted.
He thought Obito had a knack for getting into trouble, blaming the pole’s location on him.
“Alright, stop arguing. It won’t hurt if you rub it,” Rin gently said, stepping in front of Obito to massage the spot he’d bumped.
“Feeling better?” Rin asked while massaging.
“Hehe.” Feeling Rin’s soft hands, Obito smiled contentedly, nodding without really hearing her question.
“Let’s keep going,” Rin said with a smile.
“Kakashi, have you had breakfast?” Rin asked, remembering something.
Obito had come with her, so she knew neither of them had eaten.
“Not yet,” Kakashi shook his head.
“Great. I heard there’s a new dango shop with delicious three-color dango,” Rin explained.
Rin led the way, and the three went to the new dango shop.
Each bought a portion, three sticks per serving.
“They look nice,” Rin said, admiring the colorful dango.
“Not as good as Sensei Mokutsuki’s tempura,” Obito commented after eating.
“Only you would compare two completely different foods,” Kakashi said, eating a mango.
“Mm, the red one has red bean paste, quite nice. I think strawberry filling would be better,” Rin noted, unaffected by Obito’s comment.
While Mokutsuki’s cooking was excellent, sweets and main courses were different categories.
“Kakashi, can you describe a ninja’s life? Obito and I will graduate in two terms,” Rin asked curiously.
“Training and missions,” Kakashi replied simply.
“That’s too vague. It’s like saying nothing at all,” Obito complained.
“Any tips or things to watch out for?” Rin pressed on.
“A ninja puts the mission above all else. Completing the mission is the top priority,” Kakashi thought for a moment.
“You sound like a mature adult,” Rin teased.
“Mission above all else? It should be about your comrades! If the mission fails, it can be made up, but if a comrade dies, there’s no coming back,” Obito disagreed with Kakashi’s philosophy.
“That’s why you’re still a student, and I’m already a Chunin,” Kakashi retorted bluntly.
“You’re too naive. Some missions, if failed, could cause significant harm to the village, beyond one person’s life.”
“I’ll become a better ninja than you and prove it!” Obito declared, frustrated but unable to refute Kakashi’s logic. After all, he wasn’t even a ninja yet.
“Alright, you’ll both be great ninjas. Let’s check out the shopping district,” Rin suggested.
Rin led them around the shopping district, and at noon, they went for a picnic in the forest. Obito suggested catching fish in the river to grill.
“Don’t drown. This river looks deep,” Kakashi warned.
“Don’t underestimate me. I have chakra,” Obito said, holding a kunai-tipped stick as he stepped onto the water.
“He can walk on water already,” Kakashi noted, slightly impressed.
Though Obito was far from his level, he wasn’t the dead last in Kakashi’s mind anymore.
With fire nature transformation mastered and jutsu looking solid, Obito could now walk on water.
Kakashi, who had lived alone for some time, expertly grilled the fish they caught, showing off his survival skills.
Watching Rin praise Kakashi’s grilling, Obito silently vowed to learn cooking from Mokutsuki. He didn’t want to lose to Kakashi in any aspect.
