- Chapter 126 - Lightning Style: False Darkness (3k)
Monday afternoon, at the Ninja Academy.
The homeroom teachers of the first-year classes had already reminded their students to attend the large lecture hall for the theory class, so there were no embarrassing incidents of entire classes missing the lesson.
“So many people.”
“Isn’t that Uchiha Shisui from Class 1-A?”
“And there’s that kid from Class 4…”
For most of the students, this was their first time attending such a large class, and they were excitedly chatting with their friends about various topics.
Thud thud!
“Everyone, please settle down. We’re about to start the lesson,” Mokutsuki said warmly as he knocked on the table and entered the classroom.
The students of Class 1-A instantly fell silent, and most students from other classes also quieted down, though a few bolder students continued to whisper.
“Is that the famous teacher Mokutsuki who was said to be very skilled in teaching last term?”
“We’ll find out soon enough.”
Mokutsuki ignored the slight murmurs that didn’t disrupt the class. He continued, “Everyone, take out your textbooks. Today, we’ll be learning about the history of Konoha, Volume One.”
“During the Warring States Period, there was a great ninja clan known for its core values of benevolence—the Senju of the Forest…”
Although it was the history of Konoha, the lesson began with the establishment and rise of Konoha during the period of war.
As a teacher, Mokutsuki had read the three volumes of Konoha’s history several times.
It was generally consistent with his impression of the history, though the specifics were presented in a certain way. For example, the Senju were praised more and depicted as a clan committed to upholding justice, whereas the presence of the Uchiha clan was downplayed. Uchiha Madara, in particular, was portrayed as the greatest villain in Konoha’s history.
Mokutsuki somewhat agreed with the portrayal of Madara as the greatest villain in Konoha’s history because, by that time, Madara had already been heavily influenced by Black Zetsu and no longer cared about Konoha.
Mokutsuki was very familiar with the textbook, so he rarely read directly from it during his lectures. He had a timeline in his mind and could follow it while interspersing knowledge points with historical anecdotes.
This technique was something he learned from his high school history teacher, who used to make the lessons more interesting by telling little stories and using historical references.
However, Mokutsuki dared not make any jokes about Konoha’s history, as the village, despite its outward appearance as a regular city, was essentially a military base.
“This teacher is definitely better than our previous theory teacher,” admitted the students who hadn’t taken Mokutsuki’s classes before.
Some theoretical knowledge could be dull, especially for teachers who simply read from textbooks. Mokutsuki’s method was far more engaging.
[Lesson Completed]
[Rating: A]
[Reward: Water Style: Water Dragon Bullet, Lightning Style: False Darkness]
Mokutsuki already mastered the Water Dragon Bullet, and upon receiving it again, he noticed an increase in skill proficiency. The Lightning Style: False Darkness, however, was new to him.
“I’ll focus on chakra accumulation this term,” Mokutsuki decided, changing his teaching strategy to prioritize chakra over balancing with other elements.
He already knew many jutsu, including basic five-element techniques, as well as medical ninjutsu and genjutsu. His current chakra level was more than twice that of an average Jonin. If he could amass chakra comparable to the Third Hokage, he wouldn’t need to tread carefully anymore.
However, just changing his teaching strategy wouldn’t increase his chakra by that much.
Regular classes only awarded twenty points of chakra. Switching to complete focus might increase his weekly gain by a hundred points. However, with the addition of large classes, the benefits would be higher.
After school, Mokutsuki headed to the southern forest where Obito and Guy had been training all day.
Despite the skill-teaching bonus, Guy hadn’t managed to master the Shadow Clone Jutsu in the few days given. Mokutsuki ended up creating a low-chakra shadow clone to use the Transformation Jutsu and attend classes in Guy’s place.
However, to prevent Guy from falling behind in theory, Mokutsuki planned to spend some time helping him catch up during training breaks.
“Remember, tomorrow you and Shisui will have your meals here,” Mokutsuki told Obito. “I’ll make some fiery dishes that might help speed up your progress.”
Previously, his cooking had induced hallucinatory states beneficial for fire-nature chakra transformation training. Perhaps it could help with the flame-breathing technique.
“Shisui, you can start the next stage of training tomorrow,” Mokutsuki added.
Although Shisui initially lagged behind Obito, his diligence in training and impressive progress in the second step brought him up to Obito’s level, reaching fifteen points in proficiency.
“Ah?” Hearing this, Obito instinctively covered a vulnerable part of his body, recalling a particularly unpleasant memory. Entering the restroom was fine, but leaving while holding the walls was not an experience he wanted to repeat.
Even Shisui showed a wary expression. This wasn’t something to be taken lightly.
“Mokutsuki-sensei, I think our current progress is quite good. Given the difficulty of this secret technique, it’s normal to have days without improvement,” Obito suggested, hoping to delay.
“Shisui, you should try regular training first and see how it goes,” Shisui proposed.
Mokutsuki found Shisui’s argument reasonable and nodded. “Alright, Shisui, you can wait. Obito will try first.”
Obito looked at Shisui with a mix of disappointment and frustration, realizing he was being left to face the hardship alone.
“I’ve reconsidered, Mokutsuki-sensei. I think your idea is excellent and highly beneficial for training. Also, making separate meals is too much trouble. Let’s all eat the same,” Obito suggested.
No way was he going to suffer alone. If he had to endure spicy dishes, everyone should.
“Why do you keep changing your mind?” Mokutsuki flashed over and knocked on Obito’s head.
In this case, Shisui had made a more compelling argument.
Both Obito and Shisui were at fifteen points of proficiency. If Obito’s progress accelerated significantly with the fiery meals, Mokutsuki would need to prepare heavy dishes related to earth for Guy’s training as well.
But he had no idea what kind of dishes would be related to rocks or soil. Cooking with stones and mud didn’t seem practical.
Mokutsuki wondered if rocks could taste good with his system’s skill enhancement.
“I’m just worried about everyone’s training and don’t want to overwork you, Mokutsuki-sensei,” Obito laughed sheepishly, rubbing the spot where he’d been knocked.
“I don’t mind the extra effort if it means you’ll improve,” Mokutsuki replied with a smile.
Obito internally despaired, realizing he might have to endure the spicy meals alone.
“Please, Mokutsuki-sensei, don’t let Shisui make too much progress tomorrow,” Obito prayed, fearing being the only one suffering in the restroom.
By the end of the day’s training, Obito’s flame-breathing proficiency remained unchanged.
Returning home, Obito found his shadow clone lounging on his bed, reading a novel. He’d forgotten to dispel it.
Dispelled in an instant, Obito experienced the total memory of his shadow clone attending the tedious, boring mathematics classes.
“Curse you, math!” Obito groaned, collapsing onto his bed.
He noticed that despite the clone attending classes, the experience was just as dull and painful when the memories returned, making it feel like he had been there himself.
“Wait, maybe…” Obito thought, forming another shadow clone and testing it by making it solve a math problem.
After dispelling the clone, he realized the memory of solving the problem felt just as mentally draining as if he had done it himself.
Obito decided to cancel his earlier admiration for Tobirama Senju, thinking, This jutsu isn’t as helpful as I thought. The mental strain is the same whether it’s me or the clone doing the work.
He wished the jutsu could be modified to allow selective memory retention. That would make it truly valuable.
“Still, Mokutsuki-sensei and the Sage of Six Paths are the real geniuses,” Obito concluded, thinking Tobirama fell a bit short.
