- Chapter 127 - An Emergency Jonin Meeting
The next day, Obito sent his shadow clone to the ninja academy while he continued training in the southern forest.
Although the memories of the lessons would return to him eventually, he knew he had to keep up with his training.
“I can’t lose to Guy in the practical exam a month from now!” Obito thought determinedly.
He had lost many battles to Guy and won very few. This didn’t sit well with Obito, as both were Mokutsuki’s students and received similar training. Obito was not one to readily admit defeat.
Moreover, Obito had never achieved first place in the practical exams. He felt incomplete without this achievement, and it undermined his confidence in his arguments with Kakashi.
“Becoming an outstanding ninja starts with getting first place in the practical exam!” Obito shouted with determination.
Shisui, unable to fully empathize, still offered a word of encouragement.
“Perceive the flame, understand its power,” Shisui recalled Mokutsuki’s guidance on sensing the flame’s essence while using the breathing technique and performing the fire nature transformation.
Because the breathing technique required concentration, combining it with natural transformation was challenging. Shisui made several mistakes before succeeding.
Sensing the leaves in his hand turning to ash, Shisui flicked his hand but felt nothing special.
He hadn’t expected to complete the training in one go. Even Guy was still stuck at the step of understanding the essence of the element. Shisui continued his nature transformation training.
Performing the nature transformation and breathing technique simultaneously quickly exhausted Shisui’s energy. During his breaks, he continued to sense the flames by lighting wood with his fire style.
This method, though somewhat rough, was straightforward enough.
By the time Mokutsuki arrived at noon, Shisui had yet to perceive any significant progress.
Mokutsuki checked both Obito and Shisui with his appraisal jutsu and found no new changes; both were still at fifteen points of proficiency.
“Let’s eat before continuing with training,” Mokutsuki suggested with a smile.
What used to be a joyful time for Obito now brought a sense of dread, thanks to the memorable experience of the intensely spicy meals.
“Spicy is fine; the first meal is manageable,” Obito said, quickly accepting his meal box.
Based on his experience, the first meal wouldn’t be an issue, but subsequent meals would be problematic.
As expected, the meal box revealed a bright red array of chilies.
“So spicy, but so good!” Obito exclaimed, shoveling the food into his mouth despite the heat.
The food was so delicious that even the spiciness couldn’t deter him.
The feeling was akin to someone on a diet who resolved to eat less but ended up eating more because the food was just too good.
As Obito ate, his eyes grew unfocused, and he entered a trance-like state, immersing himself in the flames’ illusion.
When he regained his senses, he quickly finished his meal and resumed training his flame-breathing technique, wasting no time.
Mokutsuki didn’t stay long since the academy’s lunch break was short. After leaving the shadow clone with the students, he returned to the academy.
Shisui also resumed training after lunch, though the heavily spiced dishes had their unique flavor. Eating them every day would be a challenge.
After school, Mokutsuki planned to cook, but he was unexpectedly summoned to an emergency Jonin meeting.
“Those Cloud Village brutes are causing trouble again. This is the third emergency Jonin meeting in such a short time,” Kushina remarked, blaming the situation on the Cloud Village.
Mokutsuki chose not to comment. Although the Cloud Village instigated the war, he sensed that Kushina’s feelings were somewhat personal.
“Mokutsuki, you’re a Special Jonin now. You should attend the meeting with us,” Minato invited with a smile.
“Thank you, seniors, for helping me get familiar with things,” Mokutsuki replied jokingly.
Mokutsuki, Minato, and Kushina headed to the Hokage’s office together, leaving a shadow clone to bring food to Shisui and Obito.
On the way, Minato briefed Mokutsuki on the Jonin meetings in Konoha. Commonly, Jonin meetings were held twice a year, in January and June.
Emergency Jonin meetings, however, were different from regular ones. Regular meetings were held in a large conference room with many chairs, while emergency meetings took place in a small room with only four chairs.
Mokutsuki, Minato, and Kushina arrived neither early nor late. Some Jonin were already there, but the room was not yet complete.
Although Minato had not yet become the famous Yellow Flash, as Jiraiya’s student, he was considered a promising talent, and many Jonin greeted him.
Mokutsuki, a new Jonin, was relatively unknown, and few greeted him. He used the opportunity to use his appraisal jutsu on the gathered Jonin, collecting data on their chakra levels and skills.
Although the potential assessment was somewhat rigid, knowing their chakra levels and jutsu was valuable.
[Name: Hyuga Hizashi]
[Chakra: 27,000]
[Skills: Gentle Fist (Proficient: 2,100/15,000)…]
[Potential: S (Base Talent + Hamura’s Bloodline)]
Mokutsuki then looked at Hizashi’s brother, Hiashi, and found their stats similar. Both had S potential, but Hizashi had slightly more chakra, while Hiashi knew more Hyuga techniques.
The Hyuga brothers were the weakest adult S-potential individuals Mokutsuki had seen.
Despite their S potential, Minato, five years younger than the Hyuga brothers, could defeat them both in less than three minutes.
“Their bloodline gives them a high potential,” Mokutsuki thought. If he were to rate them, he wouldn’t give them an S-, maybe an A+ at most. The Hamura bloodline granted them significant potential, but ordinary people struggled to actualize it.
As more Jonin arrived, Mokutsuki appraised many of them.
Hyuga and Uchiha clan members had at least A potential, with the highest reaching S. Mokutsuki even saw an S+ for the first time.
[Name: Uchiha Fugaku]
[Chakra: 34,000]
[Skills: Fire Nature Chakra Transformation (Proficient: 1,900/15,000)…]
[Potential: S+ (Base Talent + Six Paths Bloodline)]
Fugaku’s S+ potential seemed mismatched with his actual abilities, as he hadn’t actualized the Six Paths bloodline’s potential. At nine years older than Minato, Fugaku had yet to unlock the Mangekyo Sharingan.
Mokutsuki was curious if Fugaku would unlock the Mangekyo during this war. In the manga, Fugaku didn’t have it, but in the anime, he did during the Third Ninja War.
Mokutsuki believed Fugaku had the potential to unlock it, given that both his sons had. However, without it, Fugaku’s stats didn’t match his potential.
This Jonin meeting exposed Mokutsuki to many high-potential individuals who hadn’t realized their full potential, mainly from the Hyuga and Uchiha clans. Other Jonins had potential around A or B.
“Ahem,” Sarutobi Hiruzen cleared his throat, signaling the start of the meeting. “Let’s begin.”
