- Chapter 135 - Uchiha's Rewards and Attention (3k)
“I’m back.”
Obito called out cheerfully as he entered the entrance, changed his shoes, and announced his return to his grandmother.
“Huh, could it be that Grandma is out for a walk?” Obito wondered, not getting the usual response.
Usually, when he called out, his grandmother would either come to the door to greet him or respond from wherever she was.
When Obito walked in, he found that his grandmother wasn’t out but was entertaining a guest, which was why she had yet to respond.
“Obito, welcome home,” his grandmother said with a kind smile.
Obito curiously looked at the guest in the living room, a middle-aged man with brown hair dressed in deep blue.
Although Obito didn’t know who he was, he could tell he was a ninja from their Uchiha clan, as he wore a ninja headband and had the clan’s fan symbol on the back of his clothes.
“Obito, you’re just in time. Say hello to Uncle Yashiro,” his grandmother reminded him.
“Hello, Uncle Yashiro,” Obito greeted obediently as instructed.
Uchiha Yashiro smiled and said, “Obito, right? You’re quite impressive.”
“Among the Uchiha of your age, you’re one of the most outstanding.”
“Hehe, I guess,” Obito said, scratching his head with a grin, not feeling particularly moved.
After all, he didn’t know Uchiha Yashiro well, so his praise didn’t carry as much weight as that from his grandmother, Rin Nohara, or Mokutsuki.
“Grandma, I took first place in the practical exam for the entire grade!” Obito eagerly shared the good news with his grandmother.
“Well done, Obito. You’ll surely become an excellent ninja after graduation,” his grandmother said, patting his head proudly.
Uchiha Yashiro nodded inwardly, feeling that Obito was worthy of his visit.
Although being first in the grade didn’t guarantee future greatness, it showed that Obito was capable.
He remembered another Uchiha of the same age, Tekka, who was strong but had never taken first place in the grade.
“Keep it up and strive to become a ninja who can uphold the Uchiha’s honor,” Uchiha Yashiro said.
Then, he placed some nutritional supplements on the table and a stack of money totaling fifty thousand ryo.
“The Uchiha clan never hesitates to reward excellence. This is for your achievements,” Uchiha Yashiro said.
His visit wasn’t just for a chat with Obito’s grandmother. Although the Uchiha clan had many relatives, they wouldn’t normally spend time chatting with elderly members unless they were direct relatives.
His purpose was to reward Obito.
This was a Uchiha clan policy: reward members who significantly outperformed their peers.
Obito should have received this reward at the end of the previous semester.
However, since the Uchiha high council didn’t precisely monitor ninja academy results, and Obito lived with only his grandmother and was only familiar with Shisui among his peers, he needed more presence within the Uchiha clan.
Only recently did the Uchiha clan realize that the previously unnoticed child had become a Uchiha genius.
“Continue training diligently. After graduation, you can join the clan’s police force. I’ll personally guide you,” Uchiha Yashiro continued.
Being part of a large clan came with certain privileges.
For the Hyuga clan, it was a privilege that the main family members could receive education within the clan and become Genin before taking the Chunin exams.
For the Uchiha clan, the privilege was the Konoha Police Force.
The Konoha Police Force was entirely controlled by the Uchiha, with all members being Uchiha clan ninjas. The Uchiha could appoint their clan members to any position they desired.
If Obito continued to excel, Uchiha Yashiro wouldn’t mind becoming his mentor.
The condition was that Obito maintained his excellence. Otherwise, Yashiro would only help him get started in the police force.
The Uchiha clan’s ancestral rule was to respect the strong. They never sympathized with the weak. If you had strength, you could have everything. If not, no one would care about your struggles.
“Thank you so much. I’ll train hard,” Obito said gratefully, ignoring Yashiro’s offer to join the police force.
Seeing Obito’s grateful expression, Yashiro nodded in approval.
“Engage with your Uchiha peers and seniors. Only clan members are the most reliable support.”
“After graduating as a Genin, you can apply to learn new Fire Style jutsu from the clan.” With that, Uchiha Yashiro left Obito’s house.
“Obito, you have a bright future. Your father never received any rewards from the clan. You’ve already surpassed him,” his grandmother said with a smile.
“Father…” Obito tried to recall but couldn’t find any memories related to his father.
His parents had died before he could remember them.
However, he had a happy childhood thanks to his grandmother’s care and didn’t lack love from an elder.
“Grandma, put the money away before it gets blown away,” Obito said, organizing it and handing it to his grandmother.
“Obito, keep it for yourself. You earned it. Grandma doesn’t need it,” she said kindly.
“I’ll keep a little and save the rest with you. I’m afraid I’ll lose it,” Obito said, taking out 100 Ryo and giving the rest to his grandmother.
She gratefully accepted the money from Obito.
“You’re really thoughtful now, Obito,” she said. “I just hope I can hold a great-grandchild someday.”
Hearing his grandmother mention grandchildren, Obito’s face turned red. He reminded her, “Grandma, I’m still in school!”
She smiled and said, “You can start building relationships even while in school. Your father and mother were classmates, you know.”
“I think Rin is a wonderful girl. How have you two been getting along?”
“I need to study now!” Obito said, blushing, and ran upstairs.
…
“This must be the place,” Mokutsuki said, looking up at the shop’s sign before entering.
He thought the shop owner’s naming sense was abstract. Without the words “ninja tools” beside the name, people might not know what the shop sold.
Without Minato’s recommendation, Mokutsuki chose a more straightforwardly named ninja tool shop.
Entering the shop, he saw various ninja tools displayed on the counter and walls, including kunai and shuriken of different designs.
Despite the abstract name, the interior setup was typical for a ninja tool shop.
“Customer, what ninja tools do you need?” a young man with a warm smile approached and asked.
“Can I use your equipment to forge my own ninja tool? I might need some assistance,” Mokutsuki asked directly.
“Using our equipment to forge your own?” The young man looked puzzled. He had run the shop for several years and had never encountered such a request.
“If you want to forge a specific tool, we do offer custom services,” the shop owner suggested after a moment.
Mokutsuki realized the owner had misunderstood and explained, “I want to personally forge a ninja tool as a gift. The sentiment behind crafting it myself is more important than its practicality.”
“Oh, I see. That’s quite thoughtful,” the shop owner said, understanding dawning on his face.
“I’ll compensate for using the equipment and any assistance. If any accidents happen during the process, I’ll take responsibility,” Mokutsuki offered.
He had yet to spend his earnings and bonuses from the previous semester, and with the summer training wages and the first month’s salary of the new semester, he had a budget of up to 700,000 Ryo.
Mokutsuki felt it should be relatively cheap since he didn’t need rare materials like chakra metal or meteorite iron.
A standard quality kunai usually costs around 200 ryo. Even if the cost is multiplied by a thousand, it would still be 200,000 ryo.
“It must be for someone important. Fortunately, you came here. Most ninja tool shops in Konoha now import their stock. Very few have forging equipment,” the young shop owner said after thinking it over.
Initially, he had considered refusing, but seeing Mokutsuki’s sincere intention and offer of compensation, he decided to agree.
“Follow me,” the shop owner said, calling a young woman of similar age to watch the shop while he led Mokutsuki out.
Mokutsuki followed the shop owner to a storage area in their backyard.
“I occasionally forge premium tools to sell, but it’s less frequent now. Selling regular tools is more profitable,” the shop owner said, showing Mokutsuki the forging equipment.
“Times have changed. Now it’s all about mass production in factories,” the shop owner remarked nostalgically.
As a child, he had often helped his father forge various tools, but over the years, handcrafting tools had become less practical in both effort and efficiency.
They discussed the cost, and Mokutsuki agreed to pay for all materials and the owner’s guidance fee.
Mokutsuki planned to start with essential materials for practice before using higher-quality ones for the final product.
His three students’ birthdays were Shisui on October 19, Might Guy on January 1, and Obito on February 10.
Shisui’s birthday was the closest, only eight days away. With the knowledge from books and accelerated learning through Shadow Clones, Mokutsuki hoped he could manage in time.
Using Shadow Clones for ninjutsu training consumed
They need a lot of chakras because they need enough chakras for the jutsu. But forging was different; he had to avoid creating too many clones and accumulating too much fatigue.
The shop owner’s full assistance would cover any gaps for tinfinal products.
