- Chapter 25 - Unleashing Potential Properly
On Saturday morning, Obito, Shisui, and the others started their training as per Mokutsuki’s instructions.
First, Obito followed Mokutsuki to learn the basic moves of taijutsu. After an hour of practice, Mokutsuki allowed Obito to rest and handed him a bottle of water, helping him wipe off his sweat.
Obito immediately sensed something was off. While Mokutsuki was an excellent teacher, under normal circumstances, he wouldn’t be this considerate. Offering water was possible, but wiping sweat was usually limited to providing a towel.
“Obito, I believe you have a lot of untapped potential,” Mokutsuki said with a smile, placing the capped bottle on the ground.
“No, no, I think my potential has already been fully tapped by you, sensei,” Obito replied, feeling a cold sweat forming after wiping away the hot sweat.
“You’re underestimating yourself,” Mokutsuki shook his head.
“How about this: while fighting with Guy, for every hit you take, you’ll have to do an extra exercise problem during the break. This should fully unleash your potential. And even if it doesn’t, you’ll improve your theoretical scores,” Mokutsuki proposed.
“Sensei, that’s not good. What if I get hit a hundred times? Doing the problems is fine, but I’m worried you’ll get tired from creating so many,” Obito said, trying to look concerned for Mokutsuki.
Desperate, Obito’s quick thinking improved his rhetoric.
For Obito, solving problems was worse than sparring with Might Guy. It was sheer torture.
“I’m glad you’re worried about my well-being,” Mokutsuki said with a gratified smile.
Just as Obito thought he might get away with it, Mokutsuki continued.
“I anticipated this, so I’ve prepared a lot of problems for you. You won’t have to worry about running out,” Mokutsuki said with a smile, pulling out a stack of test papers.
“Is this enough? If not, my shadow clones can make more,” Mokutsuki asked with a smile.
“It’s enough, it’s enough,” Obito said frantically, shaking his head and hands. Seeing the stack in Mokutsuki’s hands, he felt a chill despite the sunny weather and Mokutsuki’s warm smile.
Realising that arguing with Mokutsuki was futile, Obito decided to take a different approach. If he couldn’t avoid doing the problems, he could at least minimise them.
He signalled Might Guy with his eyes, hoping for some leniency.
Guy noticed Obito’s signals, flashed his bright white teeth, and gave Obito a thumbs-up with a relaxed smile.
“Guy, if you miss a hit, you’ll do fifty problems. For every successful hit, you can reduce one problem up to a maximum reduction of forty,” Mokutsuki continued.
Guy’s expression turned serious, giving Obito another thumbs-up with a stern look.
“Go all out? Please, not that,” Obito cried, clutching his head in despair, already seeing a mountain of problems coming his way.
“For the sake of youth, I must reduce the problems to the minimum!” The guy felt fired up.
Obito wanted to avoid doing problems, and neither did Guy.
In the ensuing battle, Guy went all out, using 120% of his speed to chase down Obito.
Obito, not wanting to do problems, unleashed his potential, becoming much more agile after taking a dozen hits.
Seeing the significant improvement in both, Mokutsuki nodded in satisfaction. They had much more potential to unlock.
When both were exhausted, the battle ended.
Obito got hit over thirty times, needing to do more than thirty problems, while Guy only had to do a dozen.
Mokutsuki felt the training was practical. With continued training, Hyuga Hiashi wouldn’t be a match for them in two months.
“It’s a pity Rin Nohara doesn’t have much talent. If she were my disciple, motivating Obito would be much easier,” Mokutsuki thought.
For the sake of maintaining a low profile, he preferred not to train non-disciples.
There was, however, a better candidate—Kakashi.
Rin Nohara could only motivate Obito, but Kakashi would motivate both Obito and Guy.
Kakashi had enough talent, but unfortunately, he probably wouldn’t become Mokutsuki’s student since he had already been promoted to Chunin two years ago.
Mokutsuki trained with them until noon, then joined them for lunch. After leaving two shadow clones behind, he went to the Third Hokage’s home to start his tutoring job.
Since it was still working hours, Mokutsuki didn’t see Hiruzen Sarutobi but was greeted by a middle-aged woman with a ponytail, Hiruzen’s wife, Biwako Sarutobi.
“Lady Biwako,” Mokutsuki greeted her.
“You must be Habu-sensei, whom Hiruzen mentioned,” Biwako said after recalling the Third Hokage’s description.
Mokutsuki nodded.
“Asuma is waiting for you in the backyard,” Biwako directed him, adding a reminder: “Asuma is a bit rebellious. Please bear with him. If he’s too unruly, just let me know.”
“I will. I have some special techniques for dealing with rebellious students,” Mokutsuki replied with a smile, then headed to the backyard as directed.
In the backyard, he saw a nine-year-old boy with a blade of grass in his mouth, lazily lounging against a tree.
Mokutsuki assessed him first.
**Name:** Asuma Sarutobi
**Chakra:** 1100
**Potential:** A+
Noticing Mokutsuki’s arrival, Asuma spat out the grass and asked without standing up, “Are you Habu Mokutsuki, the one who’s supposed to teach me?”
Before Mokutsuki could answer, Asuma quickly added, “If you can’t make me surpass the old man—the Third Hokage—then just leave. It’s pointless.”
Asuma thought he would intimidate the tutor and take control.
Just as Asuma wondered how Mokutsuki would respond, Mokutsuki shook his head and said, “Of course, I can’t.”
“Then just leave,” Asuma waved dismissively and lay back down.
He didn’t believe Mokutsuki would just leave.
“Alright, I’ll tell Lady Biwako you don’t need a tutor,” Mokutsuki said, turning to leave.
Seeing Mokutsuki actually walking away, Asuma was filled with questions. What was this? Why wasn’t he following the script? Wasn’t he supposed to persuade Asuma not to cause trouble?
“Wait, don’t go,” Asuma said, jumping up to stop Mokutsuki.
If he made the tutor leave before lessons even started, his mother would definitely scold him.
