- Chapter 38 - Obito's Fiery Life
Obito looked up at the sky. The black smoke billowing from the volcano covered the heavens, and the ash-grey ground made it seem like he was in a world of black and grey.
“So hot, so spicy!” Obito panted, trying to soothe his tongue.
Boom!
Suddenly, a deafening roar erupted. An indescribable, terrifying stream of molten lava burst from the volcano, shooting toward the sky.
The scorching black smoke, the sky-high flames, and the dark red lava added a dangerous hue of red to the black and grey world.
The terrifying lava rained down, engulfing Obito, who then regained consciousness.
“Spicy! Spicy! Spicy!” Obito cried out as the sensation of extreme heat faded, but the spicy taste clung to his tongue.
However, Obito couldn’t stop eating.
Despite the spiciness, the food was too delicious to resist.
“High temperature, burning.” Obito couldn’t help but recall the vivid vision of the erupting flames and the scorching lava that had engulfed him.
Whoosh!
The next moment, Obito, still panting, spat out a stream of crimson flames.
Shouting about the spiciness, breathing fire, and fanning his tongue, Obito looked like a performer doing a fire-breathing act.
“Uh…” Obito was confused.
“Stop releasing chakra,” Mokutsuki said calmly.
Obito realised he had been unconsciously using chakra. He stopped the chakra flow, and the flames disappeared.
“While you’re still in this state, start training,” Mokutsuki said, handing a palm-sized ice block to Obito.
“Remember the feeling: high temperature and burning,” Mokutsuki reminded.
Recalling Obito’s lost expression, Mokutsuki had a hunch about what happened.
“I didn’t expect the cooking skill-induced visions to have such an effect,” Mokutsuki thought, surprised.
“It looks like I’ll need to make spicy food for Obito more often,” Mokutsuki decided.
A simple dish with chilli had such an impact. If he made spicy tofu for Obito every day, his progress would be rapid.
“Sensei, look!” Obito said excitedly, showing Mokutsuki the quickly melting ice block in his hand.
Mokutsuki nodded. The palm-sized ice block had shrunk considerably in a minute.
“Very good, keep it up, and don’t forget this feeling,” Mokutsuki encouraged, reminding Obito not to get carried away.
“Uh-huh!” Obito nodded enthusiastically, focusing all his attention on the ice block, maintaining the chakra output.
He was thrilled with his progress.
Sometimes, the monotony of training becomes unbearable when there’s no feedback.
If every session led to such improvement, Obito thought he might turn into a training fanatic.
“Obito, you don’t mind spicy food, do you?” Mokutsuki asked with a smile.
“Spicy? If it tastes as good as that last dish, a bit of spiciness is fine,” Obito said, licking his lips, remembering the delicious food.
It was the best dish he’d ever had, even though it was spicy. It was still incredibly tasty.
“Don’t worry, it will be delicious,” Mokutsuki assured him, patting his shoulder.
Obito suddenly had a bad feeling.
Could it be…?
Even though he was holding an ice block, he couldn’t help but shiver.
“Sensei, actually, I also really like fried rice,” Obito tried to save himself.
“Spicy fried rice? I’ll make it for you,” Mokutsuki replied warmly.
“Can you make spicy fried rice without the spicy part?” Obito asked hopefully.
“Spicy fried rice without rice? You have quite a taste, but it’s doable,” Mokutsuki said, selectively hearing what he wanted to.
Obito’s vision darkened, and he nearly collapsed on the spot.
He looked to Shisui for help, but Shisui, savouring his meal, pretended not to see.
It wasn’t that Shisui didn’t care about his clanmate; it was just that this wasn’t something he could get involved in.
After all, Obito improved his training efficiency after eating spicy food, and maybe eating spicy food had a remarkable effect on fire nature transformation training.
Besides, Obito himself had said it was delicious while eating.
Of course, the main reason was that Shisui knew if he spoke up, he would end up eating spicy food, too.
Although Shisui was okay with spicy food, he didn’t want to eat it every day. He didn’t have the same urgent need to improve the transformation of his fire nature.
Obito looked at Guy for help.
Guy, noticing Obito’s gaze, smiled and gave a thumbs up, saying, “Fiery youth should be full of spice!”
Obito: …
At that moment, Obito felt his hands turn cold, and his heart even colder. Where was the clan brotherhood? The camaraderie among disciples? It could have been more reliable when it mattered most!
Obito flared his chakra and melted the ice block in his hand in one go, adjusting his goggles.
“Sensei, I think making three separate dishes is too much work for you. Why not just make one big dish and divide it into three portions for us? It would be much easier,” Obito suggested, trying to look thoughtful.
If that’s how it was, then no one should get away. They would suffer together.
“Sounds reasonable,” Mokutsuki said, pretending to think seriously.
He knew precisely what Obito was planning but chose the response that would make things more interesting.
Shisui, usually composed, couldn’t maintain his calm. He didn’t expect his usually dim-witted cousin to be so quick-witted in pulling others down with him.
“Fiery youth should be enjoyed together,” Guy laughed heartily.
“So that’s what he really thinks,” Obito and Shisui thought, feeling helpless.
Mokutsuki considered it and decided it was a good idea. After all, the food would taste great, and Obito and Shisui needed to train their fire jutsu. Guy also enjoyed spicy food.
From that day forward, Obito, Shisui, and Guy began living a literally fiery life.
“So spicy, so delicious!” Obito cried, tears streaming down his face as he continued eating the spicy tofu.
“So spicy, so good!” Guy, also in tears, ate the tofu, but his tears were from emotion, not the spiciness.
Shisui, panting from the heat, distanced himself slightly from the other two.
The three went to the bathroom together, entered standing, and left hunched over, leaning against the walls.
At school, Rin noticed Obito strangely sticking his butt out and asked worriedly, “Obito, are you feeling unwell?”
Obito, with a face full of longing, replied, “No, it’s just a minor side effect of intense training.”
“Rin, you won’t believe how much my fire jutsu has improved. I’ll definitely beat Kakashi in the upcoming Junior Ninjutsu Competition,” Obito said confidently.
One of his motivations for enduring the tough training was to wash away his previous humiliation by defeating Kakashi in front of Rin and winning first place.
“But Kakashi probably won’t participate. He’s a Chunin now. This competition is usually for us academy students,” Rin said.
She believed Obito had trained hard and improved a lot, but a ninja-like Kakashi wouldn’t join a local competition.
“What?” Obito was dumbfounded. He had assumed Kakashi would compete.
