“It’s your turn, Obito,” Rin reminded him.
Obito nodded and quickly walked onto the stage.
“Obito, do your best,” Rin encouraged him, clasping her hands.
“Obito, it’s your turn to face Kakashi. Show everyone the results of your hard work,” Guy also cheered.
Training together under Mokutsuki, Guy had witnessed Obito’s efforts firsthand.
“Don’t lose before you even face me,” Kakashi said coolly, offering his own form of encouragement.
Kakashi’s words had an immediate effect, spurring Obito to turn back and retort, “Impossible! Just wait and see.”
“Another young Uchiha, how rare. Let’s see what impressive display he’ll bring us,” the host commented, amazed by the number of Uchiha participants.
“Obito’s competing too? That’s tough luck. Another Uchiha just did well; this comparison will be embarrassing,” Asuma said, already feeling second-hand embarrassment for Obito.
He’d known Obito for over three years and was well aware of his friend’s level. Although Obito had learned the Great Fireball Jutsu, his skill was average at best.
“He’s competing too,” Uchiha Tekka noted, frowning. He started to worry that the eight thousand ryo prize might not be as secure as he thought.
“But those judges are amateurs; they might not recognize the superiority of the Dragon Fire Jutsu,” Tekka reassured himself.
Although the Dragon Fire Jutsu was a B-rank Fire Release technique, more challenging to learn than the Great Fireball, its visual impact could have been more impressive.
“Uchiha Obito, what jutsu will you be performing?” the host asked, following protocol.
“I’ll be performing the Fire Release: Great Fireball Jutsu,” Obito replied confidently.
“Another Great Fireball Jutsu. It seems the young Uchiha have all mastered this technique. Truly remarkable. Let’s see Uchiha Obito’s performance,” the host said, stepping back to a safe distance.
A large-scale destructive jutsu like the Great Fireball required caution.
“Could it be that he’s mastered both the Dragon Fire and the Great Fireball to such a high degree?” Tekka found it hard to believe.
He could believe it of Shisui, but Obito was once considered the weakest Uchiha.
Standing on stage, Obito looked out at the audience. From there, he could see everyone clearly.
Rin smiled and cheered for him.
Guy gave him a thumbs up with his dazzling white teeth.
Kakashi watched the stage intently.
Shisui seemed to be encouraging him silently.
Asuma looked a bit sympathetic.
And Mokutsuki…
“Hey, Mokutsuki-sensei!” Obito’s face lit up with joy. The only regret he had was that Mokutsuki couldn’t be there due to his tutoring duties.
Obito felt deeply grateful to Mokutsuki. He had helped Obito shake off his reputation as the Uchiha clan’s failure, beat Tekka to become second in class, and finally pass his theory exams.
Being able to stand there confidently was primarily thanks to Mokutsuki.
These twenty days of special training were not just his efforts; Mokutsuki had gone to great lengths to improve his strength, even modifying jutsu for him.
It would have been a massive regret if Mokutsuki couldn’t witness him taking first place.
Noticing Obito’s gaze, Mokutsuki smiled and waved.
“I can’t let those cheering for me down,” Obito took a deep breath, entering an unprecedented state of focus.
He couldn’t forget the failure from that year, and this time, he wanted to win it all.
“Fire Release: Great Fireball Jutsu!”
Obito quickly formed the hand seals, gathering a large amount of chakra in his throat, transforming it all with his Fire nature, and then exhaling it all at once.
Whoosh!
A massive stream of flames erupted from Obito’s mouth, rapidly forming a giant orange fireball, growing to a height of four meters—almost three times Obito’s height.
“That’s not possible! How can an Academy student perform such a powerful Fire Release jutsu?” one judge exclaimed, looking as if he’d seen a ghost.
Another judge rubbed his eyes in disbelief.
“Uchiha Obito’s Great Fireball is beyond extraordinary. Even the judges are shocked!” the host remarked, equally stunned. In five years of hosting, he had never seen such a powerful Great Fireball, especially from an Academy student.
“This level of Great Fireball… no way!” Tekka felt as if he were under a genjutsu.
He’d rather believe he was under a genjutsu than accept that Obito could produce such a powerful Great Fireball while also knowing the Dragon Fire Jutsu.
With such a powerful Great Fireball, Obito wouldn’t have needed any tricks in their previous duel. A direct clash would have ended in Tekka’s defeat.
“Is this really Obito’s Great Fireball?” Asuma rubbed his eyes, finding it hard to believe.
“Sensei hit me. I think I’m under a genjutsu,” Asuma said to Mokutsuki.
Mokutsuki obliged, lightly tapping Asuma on the head.
“Ow,” Asuma winced, staring at Obito on stage and the giant fireball. His mouth hung open in shock.
He could accept being defeated by Shisui, who might be an even greater prodigy than Kakashi.
But Obito was his old friend. He knew Obito’s level well.
This nearly house-sized Great Fireball was insane. Had Obito been hiding his true strength all along?
“Could it be that I’m actually fragile?” Asuma wondered, feeling a crisis of self-confidence.
He realized he needed to step up his game. Forget surpassing his father, the Third Hokage—he was at risk of falling behind his friends.
“This level of Great Fireball explains his confidence,” Kakashi thought, acknowledging Obito’s significant improvement.
It was so significant that Kakashi was puzzled. Obito had yet to graduate; why such rapid progress?
Typically, major growth spurts happen after graduation.
“Ten, ten, ten! Uchiha Obito scores a perfect thirty! He secures first place in advance!” the host announced excitedly.
All the judges gave Obito perfect scores, a rare occurrence.
“Did he use some trick?” Hyuga Homura, with his Byakugan activated, saw through the nature of Obito’s Great Fireball. It looked impressive but was more formidable than it seemed.
He had accompanied a friend to the event, and now it seemed that Obito had secured first place.
However, Homura didn’t think Obito could defeat him in the upcoming finals because he would prevent Obito from even using ninjutsu.
“The host says you’ve already secured first place. That’s amazing, Obito,” Rin praised as Obito stepped off the stage.
“Hehe,” Obito couldn’t help but smile foolishly.
“Don’t get too happy. When it’s my turn, they might break the rules and give me a higher score,” Kakashi said, cautioning Obito.
“Next, we have Contestant Number Five, Hatake Kakashi,” the host announced just as Kakashi finished speaking.
