- Chapter 49 - How Did You Know I Got First Place
Ichitani Yuuji stood behind Kimura Sugin, massaging his shoulders and back with a fawning tone, “Sugin, could you lend me another eighty thousand Ryo? I’ll pay you back on payday.”
Kimura Sugin thought to himself, “No good deed goes unpunished,” realizing that this massage service was quite expensive.
“Why do you need to borrow money again? Didn’t you borrow some last month?” Kimura sighed.
“I did pay you back after getting my salary last month,” Yuuji grinned sheepishly.
“So, you borrow this month, repay it next month, and then because you’ve repaid it, you’ll be short on money again and borrow more. Is that it?” Kimura asked.
Thinking it through, Kimura realized he was essentially an eighty-thousand-ryo ATM for Yuuji.
“Well…” Yuuji hesitated.
“It’s not like that, Sugin. I just started dating someone new and need to show sincerity. Next month, I definitely won’t need to borrow again,” Yuuji tried to explain.
“You said it yourself, don’t forget.” Kimura finally took out his wallet, pulling out eighty thousand ryo to hand to Yuuji.
It wasn’t the money that bothered him. Yuuji, despite being awkward in relationships, was otherwise reliable and always repaid his loans. Kimura just felt that lending Yuuji money might be enabling his poor financial habits.
“Next month, you say? You’re overestimating him, Kimura. I can already predict his excuse next month,” Ueda Aya said skeptically.
Imitating Yuuji’s tone, she said, “Sugin, just lend me this last time. I feel like I’ll succeed in confessing my feelings this month. I won’t need to borrow again next month.”
Yuuji was speechless.
“If it was the first date, going to a good restaurant to make a good impression is understandable. But you’ve been dating for two months. If she really cared about you, she wouldn’t mind eating ramen together,” Aya tried to awaken Yuuji’s dormant common sense.
“And why can’t you pick a different time? You always have Mokutsuki-sensei cover for you,” Aya added as Mokutsuki entered the room.
“She says she’s only free at that time. Otherwise, we have to wait until she’s available again,” Yuuji said, feeling frustrated.
He felt terrible for constantly asking Mokutsuki to cover for him, even offering to cover Mokutsuki’s classes in return, but Mokutsuki always refused.
“It’s okay. I don’t mind. Teaching more students also helps improve my own skills,” Mokutsuki smiled as he settled at his desk.
“Mokutsuki-sensei is too nice, but such a personality can be taken advantage of,” Yuuji thought, feeling a bit guilty.
Feeling indebted, Yuuji went over to help Mokutsuki by bringing him tea and saying nice things.
After some time, Yuuji left the office to go home and change his date.
“If only Yuuji were the taijutsu instructor for Class 1-A,” Mokutsuki thought.
That way, Yuuji asking him to cover more often is the same as Mokutsuki teaching the taijutsu classes himself.
Directly applying to the Third Hokage to become the taijutsu instructor for Class 1-A would seem unusual. Why would a person eagerly want to fill up their schedule like that?
It would also raise questions about his persona. Helping out when asked is one thing, but actively seeking more work is another.
“I should focus on the student’s dissatisfaction and the current taijutsu instructor’s teaching quality,” Mokutsuki thought.
In the Ninja Academy, skill was paramount. If students and school leaders realized that the current taijutsu instructor was hindering their progress, it would be easier to justify a change.
After thinking it through, Mokutsuki practiced calligraphy until it was time for class.
When Mokutsuki entered Class 4-2, the students were already used to seeing him.
Mokutsuki’s teaching once a week had made them consider him their regular teacher.
“Sensei, I…”
Obito was, as usual, late. Mokutsuki didn’t scold him but motioned for him to take his seat and listen.
“Darn it, Ichitani-sensei!” Obito whispered, feeling that Yuuji always picked the worst times to have Mokutsuki cover his class.
“Did you meet an elderly person who needed help?” Rin asked.
“Not today. I lost track of time while picking out a pen at the bookstore,” Obito replied honestly.
“Why not pick it up after school? Lunch break is short. Did you skip lunch?” Rin asked, concerned.
“Missing one meal isn’t a big deal. I’ll eat more tonight. I’ve been to many stores recently and found today’s shop the best,” Obito explained.
“Nothing is more important than eating. I have some snacks. I’ll give them to you after class,” Rin said, a bit exasperated.
Obito nodded and focused on Mokutsuki’s lecture.
Forty minutes passed quickly. When the bell rang, Mokutsuki ended the class, and Rin handed her snacks to Obito.
“Obito, how many old ladies did you help today?” A classmate teased.
“How did you know I got first place in the youth ninjutsu contest over the weekend?” Obito retorted.
With that comment, the teasing classmate fell silent, feeling a pang of envy. Eight thousand ryo was no small amount.
Nearby, Uchiha Tetsuo also fell silent.
He still remembered Obito’s impressive Fireball Jutsu from the contest. Initially, Tetsuo thought that by focusing on the Great Fireball technique, he might outdo Obito next time. But the recent contest had shaken his confidence.
Seeing the reactions around him, Obito’s smile grew even brighter.
During every break, Obito made a point to walk around and mention his first-place achievement to everyone, maximizing his glory.
[Lecture completed]
[Evaluation: A]
[Reward: Water Release: Hidden Mist Technique]
Seeing the lecture reward, Mokutsuki nodded. Although it wasn’t a high-level jutsu, it was convenient.
The mist created by this jutsu wasn’t ordinary fog. It could obscure the vision of even Sharingan users, and when used by Mei Terumi, it could hinder Madara’s Rinnegan to some extent.
In the pre-God-level ninja era, it was pretty helpful.
After school, Mokutsuki headed straight to the Southern Forest.
When he arrived, Shisui was still training there.
Following Mokutsuki’s suggestion, Shisui had his shadow clone attend school while his main body trained with Mokutsuki’s shadow clone.
Mokutsuki didn’t wait long before Might Guy arrived.
However, fifteen minutes passed, and Obito still hadn’t shown up, which surprised Mokutsuki.
Because Obito often walked partway with Rin, he rarely arrived at the same time as Guy.
But being more than fifteen minutes late was unusual.
Mokutsuki thought it was time for a talk. He didn’t want Obito to develop a habit of being late to training.
“Sorry, Mokutsuki-sensei, I’m late,” Obito apologized, running up with a long box in hand.
