- Chapter 51 - Mokutsuki’s Weakness is Being Too Nice
Following the rules of the practical exam, Mokutsuki had everyone draw lots to decide the participants and then gave feedback after each battle.
“The timing of your Transformation Jutsu was off, and it didn’t have the intended effect. Your taijutsu is sloppy, and your punches are too slow.”
“Creating such an obvious shadow clone won’t fool your enemies.”
“Your punches lack precision, your kicks lack power, your footwork is loose, and your reactions are slow. How can you defeat an enemy with such taijutsu?”
Mokutsuki didn’t hold back his critiques; in fact, he was quite strict.
However, Mokutsuki wasn’t making things up. He pointed out factual issues, causing the students to lower their heads in shame.
“I know you did well in the monthly exams. Your scores in both theory and practical are higher than in other classes, but that doesn’t mean you can slack off in training.
My critiques might be harsh, so I apologise if I upset you. But it’s for your own good. Taijutsu and ninjutsu are both important. If you don’t practice taijutsu now, you’ll regret it later when you face natural enemies.” Mokutsuki sighed after giving feedback to everyone.
“Mokutsuki-sensei, I haven’t been slacking off. I spend as much time on taijutsu as I do on ninjutsu. It’s just that our taijutsu teacher isn’t as good as you, so that’s why I’m like this,” Anko said, feeling a bit wrong.
“Yeah, I’ve been serious about learning too, but the taijutsu teacher is hard to understand,” Kotetsu added.
Initially, Kotetsu was a bit annoyed by Mokutsuki’s feedback, thinking he was too strict since they were just first-year students.
But after hearing Mokutsuki’s apology, Kotetsu felt guilty. Mokutsuki-sensei cared so much about them; how could he think Mokutsuki was wrong?
It’s rare for a teacher to apologise to students. Besides, Mokutsuki didn’t do anything wrong; he was just doing his job.
Kotetsu and Anko’s words resonated with the other students, who started complaining as well.
“Mokutsuki-sensei, can you replace the taijutsu teacher? He’s evil at teaching. His classes are boring and hard to understand.”
“Yeah, with a taijutsu teacher like him, I feel like I could be a taijutsu teacher myself. All he does is make us run laps.”
“How can you say that about Teacher Tani? He’s been your teacher for two months now. As a teacher, wouldn’t he want you to become stronger?” Mokutsuki defended the taijutsu teacher.
Their class’s taijutsu teacher was Tani Toshihiro, unlike Mokutsuki, who was a newcomer. Tani Toshihiro had been teaching at the academy for three years.
Despite his three years of experience, Tani Toshihiro’s teaching skills were lacking.
As a class teacher, Mokutsuki interacted with Tani Toshihiro and found him to be one of the weaker Chunin teachers.
The students compared Tani Toshihiro to Mokutsuki, who excelled in every aspect, making Tani Toshihiro look even worse.
“Mokutsuki-sensei, we don’t doubt his teaching attitude, just his ability,” Izumo explained.
“Yeah, other classes say we’re good at ninjutsu, but no one ever says we’re good at taijutsu,” another student added.
They hadn’t thought much of it before, just that the taijutsu teacher’s classes were dull and difficult.
But discussing it now made the students realise it was more than just boredom; it was about their fundamental strength as ninjas.
In practical exams, students wouldn’t go all out, and teachers would step in if something went wrong. But enemies on missions and the battlefield wouldn’t hold back.
“This…” Mokutsuki looked troubled and finally sighed, saying:
“Don’t say these things in front of Teacher Tani. Practice your taijutsu more, and if you still don’t understand, come ask me.”
The students’ dissatisfaction with Tani Toshihiro’s teaching was like gunpowder waiting to be ignited. Mokutsuki’s role was just to light the fuse.
Seeing Mokutsuki still defend the taijutsu teacher made the students feel bad for him, thinking he was too nice.
“They’re colleagues, so Mokutsuki-sensei doesn’t want to embarrass Teacher Tani,” thought Shisui’s shadow clone, who was watching the scene.
Shisui also felt the taijutsu teacher was bad, much worse than the Uchiha clan’s teachers, and incomparable to Mokutsuki.
Before leaving, Mokutsuki reminded the students not to speak ill of the taijutsu teacher directly and to be understanding.
The students nodded and agreed. After Mokutsuki left, Anko led the class in discussing how to get a new taijutsu teacher.
“Isn’t it said that bad grades will get a teacher replaced? Should we deliberately fail?” a student suggested.
“But there’s no separate taijutsu exam. Failing on purpose in the practical exam would affect Mokutsuki-sensei too,” Kotetsu shook his head.
“That’s not good. Mokutsuki-sensei is so nice; I want him to teach us until graduation,” Anko immediately rejected the idea upon hearing it would harm Mokutsuki.
Anko’s words gained everyone’s agreement.
“Then let’s all state that his teaching ability is poor and make him leave on his own?” With many people thinking, another suggestion quickly came up.
“That’s not good. Mokutsuki-sensei told us not to do that.”
“This would benefit Mokutsuki-sensei. Why not do it? Mokutsuki-sensei is our homeroom teacher. Our strength reflects well on him,” Kotetsu felt this was feasible.
A new taijutsu teacher would strengthen them and benefit Mokutsuki as well.
“I think it’s a good idea. If we force the teacher out, it’s our problem, and it won’t affect Mokutsuki-sensei,” Izumo agreed.
“And if he doesn’t leave, I have another plan,” Izumo added.
“There’s only a little over a month until the end-of-term exams. In the practical exam, we should exaggerate our ninjutsu and taijutsu skills to show the school that the taijutsu teacher isn’t good.”
“But overall grades must be good to draw the school’s attention,” Izumo reminded.
Kotetsu put his arm around Izumo’s shoulder and laughed, “You’re the best, Izumo.”
Everyone agreed, deciding to train harder and get good results in the end-of-term exams to get a new taijutsu teacher.
…
After lunch, Mokutsuki didn’t return to his office but went to the next office, where Tani Toshihiro was.
“Teacher Hanyu.” As soon as Mokutsuki entered, many teachers greeted him.
Mokutsuki responded with a smile and then approached Tani Toshihiro, asking him to step outside for a private talk.
“Teacher Tani, I’m sorry,” Mokutsuki apologised to Tani Toshihiro.
“Teacher Hanyu, did something happen? Why the sudden apology?” Tani Toshihiro was puzzled, not understanding what had happened.
