- Chapter 53 - Friends Should Help Each Other
On Thursday afternoon, Tani Toshihiro approached Mokutsuki.
“Hanyu-sensei, the students in Class 1-A are simply out of control. They’re disrupting my classes to the point where I can’t teach properly,” Tani Toshihiro complained.
He admitted that he had underestimated the students of Class 1-A when he previously said he didn’t mind.
After struggling through Wednesday afternoon’s classes, he just wanted to end the day as soon as possible.
Although he didn’t have a Class 1-A class on Thursday, he did have one on Friday morning.
To prevent a repeat of Wednesday’s disaster, Tani Toshihiro sought out Mokutsuki, hoping to leverage Mokutsuki’s influence over the students to get some help.
“Ah, these kids, they promised me they would behave,” Mokutsuki sighed, feeling sympathetic towards Tani Toshihiro.
“Don’t worry, Tani-sensei. I’ll talk to them this afternoon and make sure they don’t cause trouble for you.”
Hearing this, Tani Toshihiro felt somewhat relieved but still a bit anxious. He said, “Hanyu-sensei, could you come by during my class on Friday? I’m afraid they won’t listen to you.”
If every Class 1-A session for the rest of the year was as torturous as Wednesday, he didn’t know if he could hold out until the bonuses were handed out.
It’s one thing to be criticised by a couple of students, but to be rejected by an entire class was too much.
“No problem,” Mokutsuki nodded, agreeing to the request.
“With your assurance, I feel much better,” Tani Toshihiro said gratefully with a smile.
After their conversation, Tani Toshihiro returned to his office.
Watching Tani Toshihiro’s retreating figure, Mokutsuki thought to himself that Tani Toshihiro’s three years of teaching had been in vain if he couldn’t even understand the students’ psychology.
By relying on Mokutsuki to forcibly suppress the students, they wouldn’t resent Mokutsuki; they’d just dislike Tani Toshihiro even more.
From the students’ perspective, Mokutsuki was helping a weaker colleague, which was commendable and very considerate.
In contrast, Tani Toshihiro was seen as inept and unaware of his own shortcomings, trying to use the homeroom teacher to suppress them.
Thinking it over, Mokutsuki realised he might have been too harsh on Tani Toshihiro.
After all, this was a ninja academy, and the situation was different from what he remembered from his past life. If Class 1-A hadn’t been performing so well, Tani Toshihiro wouldn’t have been in this predicament.
Shaking his head, Mokutsuki decided not to dwell on these irrelevant matters and headed back to his office.
Since it was Tani Toshihiro’s request, what else could he do but agree and follow through? After all, he was known as the perfect colleague, Hanyu Mokutsuki.
Returning to his office, Mokutsuki resumed practising calligraphy.
“Hey, Mokutsuki-sensei, you’ve changed your pen!” Ueda Aya noticed that Mokutsuki was using a different pen.
“Yeah, it was a gift from a student,” Mokutsuki replied with a smile.
“How nice. I’ve been teaching for years and never received a gift from a student,” Ueda Aya said enviously.
Hearing this, Ikeya Isamu saw an opportunity to jab and said, “Ueda, you can’t compare yourself to Mokutsuki-sensei’s level of teaching. He’s very popular among the students. Comparing yourself to him is a bit unrealistic.”
Ueda Aya was at a loss for words. Lies don’t hurt as much as the truth.
Seeing Ueda Aya’s dejected look, Ikeya Isamu felt a sense of satisfaction.
“Maybe Ueda-sensei’s students are just shy and don’t dare to give gifts,” Mokutsuki said.
“You always know what to say, Mokutsuki-sensei,” Ueda Aya smiled. Even though she knew it was just a comforting remark, who doesn’t like hearing nice things?
Kimura Sannen watched this scene and thought that Ikeya Isamu’s perpetual single status wasn’t without reason.
When it was almost time for class, Mokutsuki left the office and headed to the classroom.
He didn’t start the class right away but addressed the issue Tani Toshihiro had mentioned first.
“Didn’t I tell you not to criticize Tani-sensei to his face and not to disrupt his classes?” Mokutsuki said with a pained expression.
“Mokutsuki-sensei, did the taijutsu teacher complain to you?” Kotetsu asked, feeling exasperated. This was the first time he’d heard of a teacher complaining about students and even exaggerating the situation.
“We didn’t disrupt his teaching; we just offered advice when he paused,” Izumo felt they were being wrongly accused.
They hadn’t disrupted the class. Despite Tani Toshihiro’s inadequate teaching, no one interrupted him while he taught. They listened and trained seriously.
Everyone was aiming for good grades in the end-of-term practical exam so they wouldn’t resist training.
“You mustn’t disrupt Tani-sensei’s classes or speak ill of him,” Mokutsuki instructed, not directly answering Kotetsu’s question.
He wanted the students to understand that he wasn’t explicitly saying Tani Toshihiro had complained, but it was clear that Tani Toshihiro was the reason Mokutsuki was giving this lecture.
“We understand,” the students nodded, though what they would actually do remained uncertain.
Mokutsuki nodded, smiled, and began teaching the class.

After school, Mokutsuki conducted his usual disciple training, and in the evening, he returned to his home in the central district.
This time, Mokutsuki wasn’t hosting; it was his turn to visit Minato’s house for dinner.
“We’ve eaten at your place so many times, we feel a bit bad. So today, you take a break and try our cooking,” Minato said, bringing Mokutsuki to his house.
Minato and Kushina teamed up, each preparing two dishes.
Minato and Kushina asked Mokutsuki to taste their food first. Mokutsuki initially wanted to suggest they all eat together, but seeing their expectant looks, he knew what he had to do.
Mokutsuki first tried Minato’s grilled fish.
Honestly, this grilled fish was different from what Mokutsuki remembered. It wasn’t a whole fish, just palm-sized pieces of fish marinated and lightly salted before grilling.
“Great, it retains the original flavor of the fish, very fresh,” Mokutsuki praised.
However, Mokutsuki didn’t just give compliments; he also pointed out some flaws, such as not managing the grilling time well.
He gave similar evaluations for the other four dishes, praising some more and criticising others less.
“Hehe, our cooking isn’t bad, right?” Kushina said with a happy smile.
She was having her cooking recognised by someone as skilled as Mokutsuki, which made Kushina very happy.
“Minato and I have been practicing making braised pork. You must come and try it sometime,” Kushina said.
Mokutsuki smiled and nodded, jokingly saying he’d have to check their progress as his students.
They continued chatting and eating.
Minato also told Mokutsuki that he had heard from other Jonin that students were complaining about their Chunin teachers, saying they weren’t as good as the academy teachers.
Hearing this, Kushina affirmed Mokutsuki’s teaching abilities. While she hadn’t seen Mokutsuki teach at the academy, she had seen him explain cooking techniques.
At this point, Mokutsuki didn’t act overly modest and instead complimented Minato and Kushina, saying Minato would be a great and famous teacher, and Kushina too…
In this pleasant atmosphere, they all enjoyed their dinner, each achieving their own goals.
