- Chapter 57 - The Real Test Starts Before Entering the Exam Hall
The physical training was much more challenging than Shisui had anticipated.
Previously, he usually only ran to train his body and rarely ran to the point of exhaustion.
But today was different. Shisui almost completed exercises for every part of his body.
After doing 800 push-ups, Shisui felt his arms were no longer his own. After 800 squats, his legs felt as heavy as lead, and after 800 sit-ups, his abdomen was in pain.
After completing all these basic exercises, Shisui leaned against a tree, feeling like he had lost control of his body.
Watching Might Guy train so intensely hadn’t affected him much before, but now that he was doing it himself, he realized how tough it really was.
By the end, he was pushing through almost entirely on willpower, his body’s sensations blurred, mechanically repeating the movements purely on will.
Shisui almost couldn’t resist using chakra to assist his movements; he was just that exhausted.
Imagine sweat constantly running into your eyes, the salt stinging, and heavy limbs testing your will and strength with every move, yet you can’t stop because you haven’t reached your training goal.
“Four hundred twelve, four hundred thirteen…”
Watching Might Guy still doing frog jumps nearby, Shisui couldn’t help but feel a sense of admiration.
They had almost started training at the same time, but Might Guy’s exercises were even more difficult. While Shisui did push-ups, Might Guy did them with a weight on his back.
Even so, Might Guy’s quantity was still higher, and while Shisui was exhausted, Might Guy had the energy left to continue.
Even in pure taijutsu combat, Shisui wouldn’t lose to Might Guy and be even more robust, but in terms of physical strength, he was far behind.
When Might Guy took a break, Shisui couldn’t help but ask, “Guy, did you always train like this before? You can handle such a large training load.”
Might Guy nodded and replied, “I started before joining the Ninja Academy. My father trained with me.”
Hearing this, Shisui felt a bit wistful and envious because he had lost his parents at that age.
Shisui believed that if his parents had been alive, they would have taught him ninja skills, too.
“Shisui, are you struggling to complete the training? I have a training secret if you want to hear it,” Might Guy offered.
Not having the same clan ties as Obito and Shisui, Guy hadn’t interacted much with Shisui, but through frequent training and meals together, Might Guy had come to see Shisui as a trustworthy companion.
“What secret?” Shisui asked, interested.
“Self-restraint. Treat these training tasks as challenges, and if you don’t complete them, impose penalties on yourself. For example, if you don’t finish 3,000 push-ups on time, punish yourself by doing 500 more,” Might Guy explained.
“Forcing yourself with these constraints is a great training method,” Shisui thought, finding Might Guy’s method similar to Mokutsuki’s battle homework strategy.
Shisui hadn’t expected someone who seemed as rough around the edges as Guy to come up with such a method to motivate himself.
“It’s pretty good, right? My father taught me this. Whenever I face a challenge I can’t complete, I use self-restraint,” Might Guy said, scratching his head with a smile.
“Then your father must be a great Jonin,” Shisui praised.
Given how Guy turned out, Shisui couldn’t imagine his father being anything less than impressive.
“Haha, he’s just a Genin, but I think my father is amazing,” Might Guy laughed.
Although he was a forever Genin, that didn’t stop Guy from believing in his father’s strength.
“A Genin…” Shisui was surprised and even more curious about Guy’s father.
Given Guy’s age, his father must be at least twenty-eight, probably over thirty. It was rare for someone that age to be a Genin still.
“I have a chakra control technique for taijutsu. Let’s discuss it,” Shisui offered in return.
…
At the Ninja Academy, in the classroom of Class 1-A.
“The ninjutsu theory course ends here. The final exam is in two weeks, so use this time to review and prepare,” Mokutsuki said.
Initially, the course should have ended a week ago, but Mokutsuki taught quickly, so there were two weeks left for review.
“Mokutsuki-sensei, don’t forget my dango,” Anko said.
“As long as you do well on the exam, there will be plenty of dango for you,” Mokutsuki smiled.
“Mokutsuki-sensei, I want some snacks,” Kotetsu raised his hand.
“If you prepare well for the exam, there will be rewards,” Mokutsuki said, organizing his lesson plans.
The bell rang, signaling the end of class, and along with it came a message from the system.
**[Lecture Completed]**
**[Evaluation: A]**
**[Reward: Fire Style: Phoenix Flower Nail Crimson]**
Mokutsuki picked up his lesson plans and nodded to himself. This was a relatively practical fire-style ninjutsu.
“Two weeks of review sounds exhausting,” Kotetsu complained.
“Then don’t review. After all, we’ve been paying attention in class,” Izumo suggested.
Because of Kotetsu’s unreliability, Izumo felt finding a girlfriend would be up to him. He had already found out that the girl next door was in Class 1-6 at the academy.
He planned to get the top score in the theory exam and then use that to approach her.
Although Kotetsu had scored a few points lower than him in the last exam, their recent mock exams were very close. Izumo saw Kotetsu as a rival for the top spot and wanted to discourage him from reviewing.
“Not reviewing sounds good. My older cousin said that sometimes not reviewing and facing the exam more relaxed can lead to better results,” Kotetsu said, nodding.
Kotetsu’s initial complaint was a setup to suggest not reviewing, hoping to throw Izumo off so he could take the top spot.
He had already boasted to Mei about getting the top score in theory, and Izumo was his main rival.
“Is that really true?” Anko asked, intrigued and two weeks of review sounded tiring to her.
Kotetsu and Izumo both nodded.
“Shisui, do you usually review for exams?” Anko asked Shisui in the back.
Shisui shook his head; he remembered everything from class.
Seeing this, Anko, who had scored first in the last theory exam, felt even more convinced that she didn’t need to review.
“Then let’s play this weekend,” Anko invited her two friends.
“No, I have things to do at home,” Kotetsu declined, intending to study hard for the top spot.
“How about you, Izumo?” Anko asked.
Izumo also shook his head, saying, “My family has a lot going on recently, so I can’t go.”
He had worked hard to convince them not to review, so he had to stay home and study.
“Okay, I’ll find someone else to hang out with,” Anko said, not doubting their excuses.
The actual exam had already begun outside the classroom, and Anko was already out of the running.
