- Chapter 65 - Who Studies Before Exams Anyway
On Monday, since it was exam day, Steel rarely went to the Ninja Academy early.
He had already studied for two weeks and didn’t need the extra ten or twenty minutes in the morning.
On the way, Steel met Shinyue Izumo, who was also heading to school.
“Izumo, good morning,” Steel greeted with a bright smile.
“Good morning, Steel,” Izumo responded, smiling back at his good friend.
“How was your weekend? Did you spend it studying?” Steel asked warmly.
“Studying? No way!” Izumo laughed heartily.
“Did you study?” Izumo asked.
“I don’t study,” Steel shook his head and said, “Who seriously studies before exams?”
“Can last-minute cramming even count as real skills?” Izumo nodded in agreement.
The two looked at each other and then burst into laughter.
“Backgammon is so much fun. You must try it after the exams,” Izumo said, acting like a heavy game enthusiast.
In his mind, he thought he had it in the bag. Steel probably really hadn’t studied, leaving Shisui as his only competitor.
“I’ll give it a try when I have time. The novels I’ve been reading lately are also really good. You should check them out when you get a chance,” Steel said with a smile as if he had actually read those novels.
“Should be smooth sailing. Izumo really hasn’t been studying and has just been playing games. My only competitor now is Shisui,” Steel thought to himself.
“Haha, I’ll definitely check them out,” Izumo responded cheerfully, feeling quite good.
“What are you two talking about so happily?” Anko appeared from behind, patting their shoulders.
“Talking about what we did over the weekend,” Steel explained with a smile.
“Playing? Didn’t you study at all?” Anko asked.
“Of course not. Did you spend the whole weekend studying, Anko?” Izumo asked, feigning surprise.
“No, just studied for one day yesterday,” Anko said after thinking for a moment.
Actually, she had only studied for half an hour on Sunday evening. But Izumo’s question made her feel embarrassed to admit it, so she lied about studying for a whole day.
“Oh, one day of studying? That’s good,” Steel said with a smile.
Just one day wouldn’t pose a threat to someone who had studied for half a month. Steel even thought Anko needed to study more and should have studied both days of the weekend.
“Don’t forget about us if you get a reward from your family for good grades,” Izumo joked.
“Hehe, given your games and novels, I might consider it,” Anko said, feeling quite pleased.
The three of them continued chatting happily as they walked to the Ninja Academy and entered their classroom, waiting for the exam to start.
Soon, Mokutsuki and Ayako Ueda walked into Class 1-A. This time, Mokutsuki was assigned to invigilate his own class.
“Teacher Mokutsuki!”
The students greeted Mokutsuki one after another, and he responded with a smile.
“Are you invigilating this time, Teacher Mokutsuki?” Steel asked.
Mokutsuki nodded to confirm.
“Teacher Mokutsuki, can we ask you questions if we don’t understand something during the exam?” Anko asked knowingly.
Thwack!
Mokutsuki tapped Anko lightly on the head with two fingers and said, “You can ask, but the answer will only be this.”
“Ouch,” Anko said, rubbing the spot that was tapped and quickly quieted down.
“Everyone, check if you have all your exam tools ready. The exam will start in ten minutes,” Mokutsuki reminded them.
Some cautious students started checking their supplies after Mokutsuki’s reminder.
“Teacher Mokutsuki, you are very popular among the students,” Ayako Ueda remarked.
She noticed that almost every student had greeted Mokutsuki, which was quite rare. Usually, in a class of forty, there would be some introverted or quiet students who wouldn’t greet the teacher.
Moreover, some might think that since so many others had greeted him, there was no need for them to do so.
“After all, I am their homeroom teacher,” Mokutsuki replied.
After ten minutes, Mokutsuki announced the start of the theoretical exam and, together with Ayako Ueda, handed out the test papers.
The students of Class 1-A gave Mokutsuki a face by not talking throughout the exam, focusing on their papers in silence.
Mokutsuki and Ayako Ueda took turns patrolling the room.
While patrolling, Ayako Ueda curiously glanced at the students’ papers. The quiet atmosphere was rare, given that the students were usually quite lively, likely because it was a Ninja Academy.
After glancing at a few students’ papers, Ayako Ueda was surprised. She randomly checked a few and noticed that their answers seemed correct.
“Teacher Mokutsuki, it looks like your class might lead the grade in average scores again this time,” Ayako Ueda whispered to Mokutsuki.
“It’s hard to say until the results are out. Maybe other classes did well too,” Mokutsuki replied quietly.
Although it was a fact that his class usually performed well, Mokutsuki thought it was better to stay humble.
When the exam ended and the papers were collected, the atmosphere in Class 1-A changed.
“Finally, it’s over,” Steel said, showing a liberated smile.
Studying every day and trying to prevent Izumo from studying had been exhausting.
“Yeah, after the practical exam, we’ll have a long vacation,” Izumo said with a relaxed smile.
With the theoretical exam over, he no longer needed to act every day to keep Steel from studying.
“Steel, Izumo, how do you think you did on the exam?” Anko asked as she approached them.
“Not great. This exam felt pretty tough,” Steel sighed.
“Yeah, there were many questions I had no idea how to answer, so I just wrote something. I don’t know how many points I’ll get,” Izumo said, frowning.
“Really? I thought it was quite simple. Maybe studying yesterday helped?” Anko scratched her head, feeling like she’d seen this scenario before.
“Shisui, how do you think you did?” Anko asked, seeing Shisui about to leave.
“So-so,” Shisui replied, pausing briefly.
He felt it was about the same as the last exam and didn’t have much to say.
“Why do I think it was easy? Did I do really well?” Anko wondered, feeling that the reward dango was getting closer.
“Tomorrow is the practical exam. Everyone must perform well to impress that female invigilator with our ninjutsu skills,” Anko reminded, thinking of their long-forgotten plan to oust the taijutsu teacher.
“Definitely. We need to make sure the school gets a competent taijutsu teacher,” Steel nodded.
“I think Teacher Mokutsuki would be great, but it would be too much work for him to teach so many classes,” Izumo said regretfully.
The other students echoed their agreement, promising to give their all in the practical exam.
