- Chapter 67 - The Highlight Battle
“Will candidate number 37, Isao Akasaki, and candidate number 38, Shisui Uchiha, please enter the arena.”
Hearing that his opponent was Shisui, Isao Akasaki froze on the spot for a moment.
Without a doubt, Shisui was the opponent every student in Class 1-A least wanted to face.
The reason was simple: Shisui was just too strong.
In the previous exam, Shisui had taken first place in both the class and the grade with an overwhelming performance. Even Anko, who was second in the grade, could only be crushed by him.
The practical exam scores were based on performance during the battle. If you were instantly defeated, the proctors wouldn’t see your skills, leading to a lower score.
But since Isao Akasaki had drawn Shisui as his opponent, he could only accept his bad luck and enter the arena.
After Mokutsuki announced the start of the exam, Isao Akasaki immediately used all three basic techniques, showcasing his proficiency.
“This student has a good understanding of the scoring rules,” Ayako Ueda nodded approvingly. She didn’t think Isao Akasaki did anything wrong.
Shisui watched quietly as Isao Akasaki displayed his techniques. Once he felt it was enough, he threw two shurikens to dispel the clones and then quickly rushed forward, defeating Isao Akasaki with two punches.
“The gap in their abilities is too wide,” Ayako Ueda noted, unable to see any significant changes in Shisui’s strength compared to the last exam.
Isao Akasaki was simply too weak compared to Shisui, making it hard to gauge Shisui’s progress.
After the battle between the thirty-ninth and fortieth candidates, Ayako Ueda completed her first round of scoring.
A quick glance showed that none of the forty students scored below 8 in ninjutsu, with an imposing average score.
“This time, Mokutsuki, you’ll probably receive another commendation from the Third Hokage. With these scores, I might even be called in for questioning,” Ayako Ueda joked.
“If that happens, we’ll likely be questioned together,” Mokutsuki replied, showing Ayako Ueda his scores, which were similar to hers.
Although they were his own students, excellence deserved recognition. He didn’t feel the need to score them lower to avoid bias deliberately.
As the battles continued, students inevitably faced off against their friends. Shinyue Izumo tearfully eliminated Steel, and Anko tearfully eliminated Shinyue Izumo.
“Haha, Steel, your deception technique is useless,” Shinyue Izumo laughed, using humor to hide his sadness and comfort his good friend.
Steel: …
He swore to train every day during the break and vowed to defeat Shinyue Izumo next semester to regain his honor.
“Haha, Izumo, Steel, how could you two ninjutsu talents possibly be a match for the genius Anko?” Anko, who made it to the class final, crossed her arms triumphantly.
The two boys exchanged a glance and decided to give Anko a taste of her own medicine when the theory test scores were announced.
“Will candidates Anko Mitarashi and Shisui Uchiha please enter the arena?” The class practical exam had reached its final stage.
Ayako Ueda watched the battle intently. Anko was the second strongest in the grade last time, arguably only second to Shisui, so she should be able to push Shisui to show more of his abilities.
Knowing Shisui was a formidable opponent, Anko immediately used her deception technique as the battle began.
This time, she made some changes. She first created seven Shisui clones, then used the Transformation Jutsu to turn herself into Shisui, and finally created a clone of herself.
But Shisui wasn’t so easily fooled. Despite the numerous illusions interfering with his sight, he never lost track of the real Anko. With a Body Flicker Technique, he appeared beside Anko and defeated her.
“A Body Flicker Technique… I’d probably need to place him in a fourth-year practical exam to see more of his capabilities,” Ayako Ueda thought.
Shisui’s fight with Anko was also one-sided, but he did show a bit more.
With Shisui securing first place in the class practical, the second day of class exams it ended.
As Mokutsuki and Ayako Ueda walked back to the office, they encountered a flustered Isao Ikeya.
“Why are Maito Gai and Uchiha Obito so strong?” Isao Ikeya couldn’t understand. They didn’t seem particularly impressive during class.
He had drawn the lot to monitor his own class and watched Maito Gai and Obito’s performances all day. He felt even Hyuga Homura might not be able to defeat them.
Isao Ikeya found it strange. How could two well-known underachievers suddenly become so strong? Was he, after all, a hidden teaching genius?
Being somewhat self-aware, Isao Ikeya quickly dismissed that notion, as he also taught a third-year class whose overall level was just average.
Seeing Mokutsuki and Ayako Ueda, he shared his thoughts with them.
“Maybe they’ve accumulated knowledge and are now showing it?” Ayako Ueda speculated uncertainly.
“Whatever the reason, isn’t it good that the students are strong?” Mokutsuki smiled.
Isao Ikeya felt Mokutsuki was right. It didn’t matter why they were so strong this semester; the school’s bonuses were real.
…
On the third day, the grade-level practical exams began.
Proctors were randomly selected from the grade-level teachers. Ayako Ueda was chosen, but Mokutsuki wasn’t.
However, as a first-year teacher, Mokutsuki still went to watch for a while.
After Ayako Ueda scored one round, she found that some top students from other classes weren’t as strong as the ninjutsu talents from Mokutsuki’s class.
“The two students per class limit needs to be revised. If not for this restriction, at least six out of the top eight would be from Class 1-A,” Ayako Ueda thought.
She felt this rule was unfair to a particularly outstanding class like Class 1-A.
Clearly, students strong enough couldn’t participate in the grade-level practical exams due to the rule.
After watching the first round, Mokutsuki left to check out the fourth-year grade-level practical exams.
There was no suspense about Shisui taking first place in the grade. Mokutsuki was more concerned about the fourth-year situation.
Both Maito Gai and Obito had tasks to achieve first place.
With two months of rigorous training as a foundation, Mokutsuki expected the training task rewards to be excellent and was looking forward to them.
When Mokutsuki arrived, the fourth-year exams had just completed the first round and were moving into the quarterfinals.
“Will candidate number one, Hyuga Homura, and candidate number four, Maito Gai, please enter the arena.”
As the proctor’s voice rang out, the observing students began to whisper.
Based on the previous exam scores, this match was undoubtedly the highlight of the grade-level practical exams, as it featured the top two performers from the last exam.
