- Chapter 74 - The Disappearance of the Third Kazekage
“Special training during the holiday, huh? It’s finally here,” Obito took a deep breath, already anticipating the upcoming month and a half of misery.
During school, at least there were five days of classes to provide some relief. Now with the long holiday, every day would feel like a weekend.
Obito just hoped the combat training would go back to how it was before. Otherwise, with over two hundred extra questions each day, his life would be over by the end of the holiday.
Upon hearing about the special training, Might Guy’s eyes lit up, but remembering the extra questions on weekends, he felt immense pressure.
Shisui’s expression remained unchanged. Unlike Might Guy and Obito, he had already mastered the Shadow Clone Jutsu and had his clone attend school for him.
Except for exams, Shisui spent most of his time training with Mokutsuki. So, even if Mokutsuki said the holiday training would be as intensive as the weekends, it would be the same as his usual routine.
“We’ll rest on Thursdays and Sundays. On the other days, come to my place for training in the morning and afternoon. You can go home for lunch, or if you stay, I’ll cook,” Mokutsuki said.
Although they came to Mokutsuki’s place every day during school, the actual training time from Monday to Friday was limited.
So, even with five days of training and two days of rest, the actual training time during the holiday would be much more than during school.
“Two days off a week!” Obito exclaimed with delight.
He did the math and realized this might be easier than during school.
During school, they had classes from Monday to Friday and still had to train with Mokutsuki, with weekends fully dedicated to training.
“Additionally, we’ll pause the combat training. Obito, you’ll continue practicing fire chakra nature transformation. Shisui and Guy, you’ll learn Soru with me,” Mokutsuki outlined the new holiday training plan.
During the Junior Ninja Competition training task, Obito had started practicing nature transformation but had only scratched the surface. He needed to continue training.
Unlike Naruto, Obito didn’t have immense vitality and chakra to use the Multi-Shadow Clone Jutsu for training. He could only progress step by step.
“No combat training!”
If two days off made Obito happy, pausing combat training made him love the holiday even more.
Without combat training, there wouldn’t be a mountain of questions. While nature transformation training was tiring, it was preferable to do questions.
After assigning the training tasks, the disciples started their respective practices.
Obito practiced with a large ice block, constantly releasing chakra, while Shisui and Might Guy learned Soru with Mokutsuki.
Watching Mokutsuki and the others flicker around, Obito felt the cold from the ice block seep into his heart.
“Mokutsuki-sensei, what is the taijutsu challenge you mentioned before? I want to learn the instant movement technique too,” Obito couldn’t help but ask.
He remembered Mokutsuki saying that besides getting first place in the grade, completing a taijutsu challenge would also earn the right to learn Soru.
But Mokutsuki had said Obito wouldn’t be able to complete the challenge back then, so Obito had yet to ask about the specifics.
However, after a month of training, he felt stronger and thought he might be able to complete the challenge now.
“The taijutsu challenge? It’s tough. Are you sure you want to try?” Mokutsuki created a shadow clone to talk with Obito.
“But everyone else is learning the instant movement technique. If I don’t, I’ll fall behind,” Obito said.
“Alright, I’ll set up the field today, and you can try the challenge tomorrow,” Mokutsuki nodded.
Obito’s reaction was within his expectations.
He hadn’t directly taught Soru to all his disciples but had set conditions to intensify the training for those who failed.
Rather than forcing training, he believed it was better to stimulate the disciples’ motivation.
He planned to set up mechanisms that required sufficient speed and strength to complete. To learn Soru, Obito would indeed work hard to improve his physical condition.
Once the challenge was completed and his body strengthened, learning Soru would be easier.
Additionally, a reward earned through one’s own effort would make Obito take the learning process more seriously.
Mokutsuki considered every aspect to help his disciples enhance their abilities, including their psychological well-being.
After training, Mokutsuki went to his house in the central district as usual.
Today, he prepared sushi and tempura.
However, there was a slight interruption during dinner. As the three were eating and chatting, they heard the cry of a hawk from outside.
“Why now?” Kushina, who had just finished a piece of sushi, was a bit annoyed.
“Let’s go. It’s sudden, so it must be something important,” Minato said, standing up.
“Sorry, Mokutsuki, but we have to leave for now. An emergency Jonin meeting has been called.”
Whenever something significant happened in Konoha, ninja animals were dispatched to notify Jonin urgently. This wasn’t Minato’s first time experiencing it.
“Mokutsuki, remember to save some for us. These meetings usually don’t last long. With Minato’s speed, we’ll be back soon,” Kushina reminded Mokutsuki to save some food before leaving.
“I can’t finish all of it alone,” Mokutsuki smiled and nodded, wondering what the emergency could be.
Based on the timeline, Mokutsuki guessed it might be related to the Third Shinobi World War.
“Is the war about to break out?” Mokutsuki pondered.
Kushina and Minato didn’t keep Mokutsuki waiting long. They returned in less than half an hour.
“I thought it was something serious, but it turns out the Third Kazekage of Sunagakure disappeared,” Kushina said as she entered the room.
“Calling an emergency Jonin meeting so suddenly made it seem like the Third Hokage had disappeared.”
Hearing Kushina’s words, Mokutsuki thought, as expected, that a major war was imminent.
The Cloud Village, which had been building its strength, wouldn’t miss this opportunity with the Third Kazekage disappearing.
“Any Kage’s disappearance significantly impacts the ninja world. The sudden disappearance of the Third Kazekage likely means war is on the horizon,” Minato said, his expression serious.
“Indeed, Sunagakure is in trouble,” Kushina nodded, taking a big bite of sushi.
Listening to their conversation, Mokutsuki felt mixed emotions.
Few could foresee that the Third Shinobi World War, triggered by the Third Kazekage’s disappearance, would result in Konoha being besieged the hardest, though it ultimately emerged victorious.
With the impending war, Mokutsuki felt a growing sense of insecurity.
Fortunately, as a Root agent, he knew Danzo would wait to send him to the front lines. He would be in the later waves if sent at all.
Mokutsuki had no expectations from Danzo.
He only hoped to elevate his strength to the Kage level before the flames of war reached Konoha.
Strength was the most crucial thing in this dangerous world; without it, everything else was meaningless.
