- Chapter 78 - Do Not Underestimate the Students
What is it like to teach more than three hundred people at once?
Being watched by over two hundred pairs of eyes, with looks filled with curiosity, expectation, and doubt, Mokutsuki had reason to believe that a more introverted person would find it hard to speak under such intense scrutiny.
However, Mokutsuki was not an ordinary person; the more students there were, the happier and more excited he became.
“Hello everyone, I am Yuzuru Mokutsuki, the teacher in charge of this summer training,” Mokutsuki said with a warm smile, introducing himself.
Although he was pretty well-known in the school, and some of the classes had him as a substitute teacher, Mokutsuki didn’t assume everyone knew his face, so an introduction was necessary.
“Mokutsuki-sensei!” Some students who were familiar with him greeted him warmly.
Mokutsuki smiled and nodded in response before continuing, “I know many of you are wondering why we’re holding summer training during the holiday and what the purpose of this training is.”
“I can tell you clearly that this training has only one purpose: to enhance the strength of the participating students so they can become more qualified ninjas in the future!”
Mokutsuki didn’t mention the harsher realities, such as preparing for possible war, since the war hadn’t officially broken out yet. Even the most cautious Konoha ninja probably wouldn’t anticipate Konoha becoming the center of the war, besieged by the four great ninja villages.
“What will the training be like? It can’t be the same for us Genin and the students, right? There’s a big difference in our abilities,” said Renji Yoroi, a teammate of Asuma, who had been brought here by him.
Renji felt tricked. How could a Chunin teacher be as great as Asuma had claimed?
“I have arrangements for that. But don’t underestimate the Ninja Academy students,” Mokutsuki replied, calling out Shisui.
“His name is Uchiha Shisui. He’s a student in my class, currently in the first year. You can spar with him to test the Academy’s students’ level,” Mokutsuki said with a smile.
Mokutsuki had anticipated this situation. Genin, having seen more of the ninja world and trained under Jonin, would naturally have a different mindset when facing Ninja Academy students and Chunin teachers.
In the ninja world, strength was paramount. Mokutsuki’s solution was simple and direct: if you think the students are weak, fight them and see if you can win.
Seeing Shisui walk out calmly, Asuma’s eyelids twitched uncontrollably. He remembered being defeated by this first-year student two months ago, a scene he could never forget.
“Renji, I wouldn’t tolerate this if I were you. He’s just a first-year student,” Asuma whispered to Renji, eagerly anticipating Renji’s shocked expression upon defeat. He didn’t want to bear this pain alone.
“This doesn’t seem right. He’s just a first-year student,” Kurenai said softly, feeling it was unethical.
“Then let me, as a senior, see if the Academy’s standards have declined,” Renji said, stepping forward.
Mokutsuki could have called out a fourth-year student, but instead, he called a first-year. Renji felt underestimated and couldn’t resist, especially after Asuma’s instigation.
The students stepped back to give them enough room to fight.
“If you can’t handle it, just surrender. Don’t blame me if you get hurt,” Renji warned, drawing a kunai.
“Thank you for the reminder, senpai. I won’t push myself,” Shisui replied politely.
Seeing Shisui’s respect for his seniors, Renji decided to let Shisui lose gracefully, not too harshly.
Obito covered his face, unable to watch the impending brutal scene. He knew Renji’s strength well enough to know he couldn’t beat Shisui.
This fight was a foregone conclusion. The one being thrashed wouldn’t be the first-year student Shisui, but the graduated Genin, Renji.
“Go Shisui, show that guy who looks down on students what you’ve got!” Anko cheered from the front row.
Kotetsu and Izumo also moved to the front to cheer for Shisui.
“Uchiha Shisui, isn’t he that first-year genius who scores perfect marks in everything?” a fourth-year student said, recognizing Shisui’s name.
“No matter how talented, it’s impossible for a first-year to beat a full-fledged Genin, right?”
While the students hoped for Shisui’s victory, most didn’t believe it was possible. A first-year student beating a Genin was too extraordinary.
“Begin!” Mokutsuki, acting as the temporary referee, called out when both were ready.
“I’m coming,” Renji warned, then charged at Shisui with his kunai.
Shisui calmly drew his own kunai and met Renji head-on.
The sound of clashing kunai echoed as Shisui effortlessly parried Renji’s attacks, no matter how fierce.
Renji felt something was off. The strength, speed, and reactions were not those of a first-year student.
Renji jumped back, quickly formed hand signs, and created five shadow clones to confuse Shisui.
“Fire Release: Great Fireball Jutsu!” Shisui calmly formed hand signs and released a three-meter-high fireball.
“Who’s the real Academy student here?” Renji wondered, staring at the massive fireball approaching and his intangible clones, his mind going blank.
Fortunately, the fireball wasn’t too fast, and Renji managed to escape its range by sprinting at full speed.
As Renji breathed a sigh of relief, feeling he had dodged the fireball, a kunai pressed against his neck from behind.
Feeling the cold blade, Renji realized Shisui had stealthily approached him.
“I lost. I shouldn’t have underestimated the Academy students,” Renji admitted his defeat. If Shisui were an enemy, he would be dead.
“Thank you, senpai,” Shisui said humbly, putting away his kunai.
Shisui could have quickly taken down Renji instantly, but he didn’t want to embarrass him too much, as Renji’s earlier remarks seemed unintentional.
“He held back. That Great Fireball was weaker than the one he used on me,” Asuma thought.
“Senpai, do you have a grudge against him? Why are you so happy?” Kotetsu asked, seeing Asuma smiling.
“No, I just remembered something amusing,” Asuma denied, still smiling.
**Author’s Note:**
Regarding a point in this chapter, Renji Yoroi wasn’t Asuma’s teammate in the manga. But in the anime’s Chunin Exam flashbacks, Asuma, Kurenai, and Renji were together, with Rin celebrating Kakashi’s promotion to Jonin. Given the confusion around Asuma’s teammates, I set it up this way. The Naruto storyline has many inconsistencies, like Kakashi graduating as a Chunin yet still teaming up with Obito and Rin, who graduated years later and even took the Chunin Exam with them. I can’t guarantee every detail is perfect, but I will try to make it cohesive.
