- Chapter 78 - Do Not Underestimate the Students
Renji Yoroi returned to the group with a frustrated look.
He wasn’t upset about losing because Shisui was indeed strong, and he wasn’t a match. But losing to a newly enrolled Academy student and being defeated so cleanly was humiliating.
“This Uchiha Shisui is incredibly strong. Even a full-fledged Genin couldn’t beat him. Even Kakashi at the same age might not have done better,” some students whispered.
“Or maybe the opponent was just weak…”
Hearing the students’ discussions, Renji felt even more ashamed.
As soon as Renji rejoined the group, he saw Asuma grinning uncontrollably.
“Asuma, did you know something?” Renji asked suspiciously.
Thinking it over, he realized something was off.
Asuma had mentioned that Mokutsuki was his tutor, so it was possible Asuma knew about the genius Uchiha Shisui in Mokutsuki’s class.
“Know what?” Asuma played dumb. “How would I know that first-year student was so strong? He beat you in just a few moves.”
Renji felt another sting. Being beaten so easily by a first-year student was embarrassing.
“Everyone, quiet down,” Mokutsuki said, signaling with his hand for silence. “We have students from first to fourth years here, as well as some recent graduates. You are all comrades from the same village, and I hope you will get along.”
“I will conduct a strength test and then divide you into three groups: A, B, and C. Each group will have different training programs,” Mokutsuki explained, addressing Renji’s earlier question.
With students from various grades and some Genin, Mokutsuki could only teach some people the same thing, so he chose to divide them into groups.
All in the same training ground, he could teach each group one by one, using shadow clones to assist, treating the three groups as three students.
The strength test was simple. Students demonstrated their ninja basics, including ninjutsu, taijutsu, and shuriken throwing, with teachers scoring them.
Mokutsuki called in some teachers from the teacher’s division, and within one class, they completed the scoring and grouping of over three hundred students.
Mokutsuki designated Group A as the Genin-level group for recent graduates and top Academy students, focusing on chakra control, physical conditioning, taijutsu, and Body Flicker Technique.
Group B consisted of outstanding students from within the Academy, focusing on the Three Basic Jutsu, chakra control, and physical conditioning.
Group C was the regular student group, with training similar to Group B but at a more fundamental level and with less intensity.
Mokutsuki glanced at the Group A list and immediately recognized many names.
Naturally, there were Obito, Shisui, and Might Guy, but also Asuma, Kurenai, Genma, and Shizune.
Besides Shisui, most of Group A were either Genin or fourth-year students ranked in their grade.
In Group B, Mokutsuki saw only three familiar names: Ebisu, Hayate Gekko, and Rin Nohara. Ebisu was competent but just short of Group A’s level, and Hayate had just entered the third year.
Anko, Kotetsu, and Izumo ended up in Group C, as the distinction between outstanding and regular students was based on fourth-year standards. Though they could manipulate lightning in the first year, they were considered average by fourth-year standards.
Mokutsuki first went to Group A’s area and said, “Those who have completed tree climbing and water walking training, stand to the right. Those who have only completed tree climbing, stand to the left. Those who haven’t completed either, stand in the middle.”
Most stood to the left, a few to the right, and even fewer in the middle.
Next, Mokutsuki had those on the left try tree climbing and those on the right try water walking.
After observing the students, Mokutsuki gauged the chakra control level of Group A.
Obito, Asuma, Shisui, and Might Guy no longer needed to practice water walking, but the others did.
“You’re not done with the training yet. You’ve only scratched the surface,” Mokutsuki told a student struggling with tree climbing.
Then, Mokutsuki had Obito demonstrate what it meant to complete tree climbing and water walking training.
Obito sprinted up a tree, stuck to a branch, and rotated 360 degrees several times, his feet securely attached.
Then, Obito showcased running freely on the water even while performing the Water Dragon Bullet Jutsu.
“Only at this level can you say you’ve completed the training,” Mokutsuki said, pointing to Obito. “So far, only Asuma, Shisui, and Obito have reached this level.”
Renji, unwilling to accept this, tried it himself, but it barely lasted three minutes before he started swallowing water.
“Asuma can do this?” Renji felt Mokutsuki might be overestimating Asuma’s abilities.
“Don’t underestimate me, Renji. My chakra control is pretty strong,” Asuma said, showcasing his skills to prove himself.
“Has Asuma secretly gotten stronger?” Renji wondered, watching Asuma confidently navigate the water.
“Asuma, you’ve improved a lot,” Kurenai said honestly.
“Ha, it’s just basic skills,” Asuma said, but his grin widened at Kurenai’s praise, feeling that all the training with Mokutsuki had paid off.
“Chakra control is an essential skill for a ninja. I hope that in two weeks, all of you will be standing on the right,” Mokutsuki told the Group A students after demonstrating a few times.
Then, Mokutsuki moved to Group B and asked the same question.
Group B had only Ebisu on the right, most in the middle, and a few on the left.
After observing their chakra control, Mokutsuki found it significantly behind Group A. Except for Ebisu, Mokutsuki had everyone practice tree climbing, with Ebisu continuing water walking.
For Group C, Mokutsuki skipped the question and started teaching taijutsu directly.
Group C’s training plan was morning physical conditioning and taijutsu and afternoon Three Basic Jutsu practices. Once they caught up in these areas, they would start chakra control training.
Mokutsuki left a shadow clone with each group, with his main body moving between groups to correct students’ mistakes.
The morning passed quickly, and Mokutsuki announced the lunch break.
