- Chapter 95 - Obito Can't Win Without Struggle
“So, it’s them, huh? Meeting in the first round.”
The observing fourth-year students all felt a sense of regret. Might Guy and Obito Uchiha were the top two in their year in combat skills. Even in the strongest A group, they had the potential to advance to the semifinals.
But now that they were facing each other early on, one of them was bound to be eliminated prematurely.
“With Obito and Guy facing each other in the first round, it means one less tough opponent later on,” Asuma Sarutobi thought, watching them with keen interest.
He was more familiar with Guy than he was with Obito and didn’t know Guy’s exact combat capabilities. However, since Guy had managed to defeat Obito in the practical exam, his strength was undoubtedly formidable.
With this in mind, Asuma put on a severe expression, ready to gather information on both Obito and Guy from this match.
“A first-round fight with Guy…” Obito wore a troubled expression.
Guy had already mastered the technique of Soru, while Obito had yet to perfect it, unable to execute three consecutive bursts simultaneously.
However, Obito didn’t think he had a chance of winning.
Their current strength didn’t allow them to use Soru multiple times in quick succession; it put too much strain on their leg muscles.
So, Obito only had a slight disadvantage, not an insurmountable one.
Seeing that his first opponent was Obito, Guy felt his fighting spirit ignite.
Both quickly moved to the battlefield, ready to start the fight.
“Begin!” As soon as they were ready, Mokutsuki announced the start of the battle.
The moment Mokutsuki’s words fell, Guy’s figure disappeared from his original spot.
“Leaf Great Whirlwind!”
Guy’s passionate voice echoed through the A group.
Knowing each other so well from constant training, Guy didn’t bother with probing attacks. He went all out right from the start.
He first executed a rapid burst with Soru, closing the distance to Obito in an instant, and then unleashed his most robust kick.
“He’s so fast!” The surrounding students were amazed by Guy’s speed.
To them, it seemed as if Guy had teleported, his form vanishing in an instant.
“What an incredible body flicker technique!” Asuma was even more astonished.
He knew the body flicker technique, but his speed was far from as fast as Guy’s, and he needed to form hand signs.
While Guy aimed to close in for close combat, Obito’s plan was to use Soru to create distance and launch ninjutsu attacks.
However, since Obito was slightly slower, he was still hit by Guy’s kick. Though he managed to block with his arm, the force made his arm tremble uncontrollably.
Starting off on the back foot, Obito’s mind raced. He knew that if he fell into Guy’s attack rhythm, he would lose for sure. So, he quickly decided to use Soru twice consecutively to put some distance between them.
Guy quickly followed, but Obito managed to create a significant gap because Guy only used Soru once.
“I’ve won,” Guy judged.
Counting the first exchange, Obito had used Soru three times within a minute. Even with his more muscular body, Guy wouldn’t dare to use it so much in such a short time. Obito wouldn’t be able to use any more body flicker techniques or even run fast now.
“Fire Style: Great Fireball Jutsu!” Obito, enduring the soreness in his legs, quickly formed hand signs and launched a three-meter-high fireball.
The massive fireball, burning fiercely, hurtled towards Guy.
The guy didn’t panic. Instead, he focused on his surroundings, wary of other possible attacks.
Having faced the Great Fireball Technique many times, Guy knew it was powerful but easy to dodge. The real threat was usually the follow-up attacks during the fireball’s travel time.
However, to Guy’s surprise, Obito didn’t take the opportunity to launch another attack. When Obito reappeared in Guy’s sight, Guy saw there were now five Obitos.
“He used the fireball to obscure my vision and create shadow clones?” Guy quickly deduced Obito’s plan.
The five Obitos spread out and ran, making it hard for Guy to identify the real one among the illusions.
Until Guy noticed one Obito running slightly slower, with an occasional odd expression flashing across his face.
“I found you!” Guy gathered chakra in his legs and used Soru to charge at the slower Obito, aiming to catch him off guard and eliminate him from the match.
Given the strain on Obito’s legs from repeatedly using Soru, it was entirely normal for him to appear slower.
“Leaf Whirlwind!”
The guy aimed a spinning kick at Obito.
It seemed Obito hadn’t anticipated Guy finding him so quickly, nor had he expected Guy’s speed. Obito didn’t even have time to assume a defensive stance.
Just as Guy thought the match was over, his expression changed drastically.
The Obito he kicked vanished upon impact.
“It was a clone!” Guy quickly turned to search for the real Obito.
At that moment, the real Obito had already completed a Fire Style jutsu not far from Guy.
“Fire Style: Dragon Flame Jutsu!”
Obito spat out a half-human-sized fire dragon that charged towards Guy at high speed.
Feeling the heat of the fire dragon close by, Guy had no choice but to endure the pain in his leg muscles and use a double-burst Soru to dodge the attack.
But the Dragon Flame Jutsu was different from the Great Fireball Technique. The fire dragon could change direction. As Guy’s figure vanished, Obito immediately controlled the fire dragon to follow Guy.
“Water Style: Water Formation Wall!”
Just as the fire dragon was about to reach Guy, a water wall rose up, blocking the fire dragon.
Mokutsuki had intervened.
Although Obito should have been able to stop the fire dragon just in front of Guy, Mokutsuki worried that Obito’s condition might lead to the jutsu going out of control, so he preemptively blocked it.
“Uchiha Obito wins!” Mokutsuki announced the result.
He was curious to know if his previous training had paid off or if Obito simply couldn’t perform under favorable conditions. Previously, in evenly matched scenarios, Obito couldn’t win. This time, when Mokutsuki believed Guy had a significant advantage, Obito still managed to win.
“Guy, I won this time,” Obito said with a smug smile after hearing the result, laughing heartily.
He had finally beaten Guy in a practical combat scenario and from a disadvantageous position, no less!
But before Guy could respond, Obito collapsed to the ground, fainting.
“Obito, are you okay?” Guy rushed over to check on him.
Mokutsuki appeared on the field, picked Obito up, and said, “He probably overused his chakra and is too exhausted. I’ll take him to the Konoha Hospital.”
Mokutsuki left a shadow clone to continue overseeing the combat tests while he took Obito to the hospital.
