- Chapter 2 - Old Man Law Next Door Has Become the Pirate King
With a sad look, Wang Yu gazed at the rolling waves of the sea and pulled out a newspaper from his waist to start reading.
He had picked up this newspaper in the village, even though he had already read it once.
As for why he could understand it, that was definitely a perk of being a transmigrator.
Speaking of perks, Wang Yu cursed in his heart.
Isn’t it common for transmigrators to have cheat systems nowadays?
But after three days as Foxy, he still hadn’t summoned one.
Not even a single feather.
Wang Yu felt that the world had some malice towards him, casting a shadow over his heart, making things quite unbearable.
It was now the year 1500 in the Sea Circle Calendar, and Old Man Law next door had become the Pirate King about a year ago.
At this moment, who knows where he was causing trouble for Portgas D. Ace’s mother? It’s also unclear if he had contracted an incurable disease, as many One Piece fans speculate that Law died of cancer, though no one knows for sure.
It seemed pretty shocking that a formidable person like him could die of cancer.
However, Wang Yu speculated that Law might have died from some virus or even syphilis. He even wondered if it could be a sexually transmitted disease.
The Great Pirate Era hadn’t started yet, so Old Man Law could still live for a while.
Talking about this made Wang Yu question how old Foxy actually was.
When watching the anime, he thought Foxy looked a bit worn, but he didn’t expect him to be this old.
The Great Pirate Era hadn’t even started yet, and Foxy was already in his teens. By the time the plot begins, wouldn’t he be a middle-aged man?
There are still more than 20 years to go.
Damn it, when Law starts the Great Pirate Era, pirates will be everywhere, and it won’t be easy to survive those 20-plus years!
Wang Yu thought about it. In these 20 years, the Four Emperors will establish their positions, as will the Seven Warlords of the Sea. Various powerful and bizarre characters will reach the peak of their lives during this period. It’s much more dangerous than Luffy’s era.
No way, I have to join the Marines early to save my neck.
Wang Yu didn’t have grand ambitions to become a king or ancestor. His only hobby was discussing human origins with pretty girls or playing with birds and dogs. Constantly fighting isn’t a life worth living.
In other words, he had no ambition and was inherently lazy and irresponsible.
A rotten piece of wood can’t be carved. If it were any other transmigrator, their first goal would be to find a way to defeat the Four Emperors and take their place.
Then, they would destroy the Revolutionary Army and the World Government, establish a vast empire, and live a life of luxury.
That’s what a normal transmigrator should do.
At first, Wang Yu thought so too, but without a system or any other cheats, he gave up on that idea.
Putting away the newspaper, Wang Yu stood up from the rock, stretched lazily, and slowly left the small hill.
Currently, Foxy lives in a small village somewhere on the Grand Line, an insignificant place.
In three days, he hadn’t seen any pirates.
Walking down the road, Wang Yu pondered how to leave this place and join the Marines. Going out to sea alone was impossible; it was no different from seeking death.
Luffy could drift in the vast sea with just a barrel, which showed the terrifying power of the protagonist’s aura.
If it were any other insignificant character, they’d sink to the bottom of the sea without a trace.
He had to rely on luck, hoping for a merchant ship or a passing Marine.
Wandering around, Wang Yu passed several small hills and saw fields and vegetable plots with a few mountain paths extending through them, fitting the typical depiction of a secluded paradise.
“Foxy, you went to the seaside again?”
In the vegetable field, a simple woman was working with a hoe. She wasn’t a stranger to Wang Yu.
“Yeah.”
Nodding, Wang Yu learned from Foxy’s memories that this woman, called Abis, had taken good care of him.
Foxy turned out to be an orphan, raised on communal food, living a poor life. He found the Noro Noro no Mi in a mountain stream when he was young.
What puzzled Wang Yu the most was that after eating the Slow-Slow Fruit, Foxy hadn’t developed it. His only move was to make an orchid finger gesture and shoot a slow pink beam, which even seven- or eight-year-olds could dodge.
He had no ambition and spent his days living like a salted fish with no goals.
No wonder he was still a nobody 20 years later, even failing to beat a newbie like Luffy.
Along the way, many villagers greeted Wang Yu, and he responded to each one.
Soon, Wang Yu walked through a street and arrived at his current residence.
A small wooden hut with just one room and a leaky roof.
Apart from a bed and some shabby household items, it was highly impoverished.
Standing at the door, Wang Yu sighed as he looked at the cramped room.
Destitute and impoverished, it seemed success was his only option.
“Fine, Foxy is Foxy. I’ll accept my fate.”
Picking up a chipped broom, Wang Yu began to clean up. Who knew when he could leave, but at least here, he had shelter from the wind and rain.
After spending two or three hours tidying up, Wang Yu was satisfied with the refreshed doghouse.
Wiping the sweat off his forehead, he scooped a spoon of cold water from the water tank and drank it down, belching contentedly.
“I need to find a way to lose this potbelly and start training.”
Sitting on a large rock outside the wooden house, Wang Yu rested and thought.
Appearance and strength were crucial. Who knew when he might encounter danger?
For a better life in the future, if not now, then when?
As for how to train, Wang Yu could mimic the routines from anime and novels: running, frog jumps, push-ups, and various exercises. They were bound to be helpful.
But before training, he needed to solve the food problem. The strong in this world had big appetites.
Though Wang Yu was currently penniless, getting food was still simple, especially since he was now a Devil Fruit user.
Even the most useless Devil Fruit user wouldn’t starve to death!
Picking up the machete he had just tidied, Wang Yu found it quite handy.
He followed the path towards the back mountain, greeting villagers along the way.
The scorching sun blinded him as he entered the forest. The deeper he went, the fewer human traces there were, and the vegetation became denser.
Villagers occasionally hunted in the forest, but they never went too deep due to rumors of tigers and bears.
In this world, humans were formidable, but so were other creatures.
Wang Yu didn’t plan to go deep, just circling the outskirts, hunting some easy prey.
Soon, Wang Yu spotted a target: a wild sika deer.
It was the size of an adult human, leisurely grazing in the forest, occasionally raising its head to stay alert, ears twitching.
Carefully hiding in the forest, Wang Yu gripped the machete in his right hand and formed an orchid finger gesture with his left. A small pink beam slowly shot towards the deer, moving at a snail’s pace.
The deer, sensing movement, looked up at the slowly approaching beam, eyes filled with curiosity. It didn’t understand what this light was but felt it wasn’t dangerous.
Seeing the deer’s stupidity, Wang Yu knew he had succeeded.
After some research, Wang Yu found out Foxy was born on April 4, 1486, in the Sea Circle Calendar. He’s curious to know if it’s accurate.
