One Piece Shadow Army - Chapter 33
The ship sailed on, carried by the wind.
On the upper deck, Curls enjoyed the sea breeze while sketching the vast, majestic seascape before him.
Sketching was his greatest interest besides training to become stronger.
Though not colorful like oil paintings, his sketches captured the dynamic scenes of the ship sailing on the sea, waves crashing on either side.
With the final stroke, the seascape sketch was complete.
Curls stretched slightly, feeling a bit self-deprecating.
Too bad he’s not named Jack; otherwise, he might have found love at sea.
But then again, this was the world of pirates. Even if he were named Jack, love would be unlikely—only battles on ships awaited.
With a slight sigh, Curls packed away his sketchbook and leaned against the deck railing to enjoy the wind.
The ship’s destination was the Baratie, the sea restaurant, and along the way, there were plenty of entertainment options for the passengers.
His father, Ronald, was in the ship’s main hall, chatting with other wealthy individuals.
His sister, Verisia, was in the restaurant, enjoying food and pastries.
Curls, uninterested in other activities besides training and sketching, preferred to stay outside.
After half an hour, Curls found the outside a bit dull and walked back inside the ship.
The luxurious interior featured a central stage where a few couples were dancing the tango to the music from a radio.
Uninterested in the dancing, Curls sat at the table where his sister was eating.
“Brother, do you want some?” Verisia offered a piece of cake.
“I’m not hungry right now.” Curls shook his head.
“Then I’ll eat it!” Verisia happily munched on the cake.
“Okay.” Curls ruffled his sister’s hair, smiling rarely.
Curls smiled most when with his family, which was the reason he strived to become stronger.
Suddenly, Curls noticed a man with pink hair.
A Marine.
The man had a plain appearance and slightly dark skin, but the Marine justice coat he wore and his spirited demeanor revealed his identity.
In the Marines, only those with the rank of ensign or higher could wear the justice coat.
The pink-haired man had a reason to be proud, being an ensign at his age.
This Marine officer, with a decent-looking female companion, sat at a table behind Curls by the window.
“Ensign Fullbody, are you really from Marine Headquarters?”
“Of course, I’m an ensign from Marine Headquarters. There’s no doubt about that.”
Their conversation reached Curls’s ears, identifying the ordinary-looking, slightly dark-skinned Marine.
It was Fullbody, the Double Iron Fist from the storyline!
…
Loguetown Marine Base.
In the infirmary.
Bright sunlight filtered through the windows, and the sea breeze gently stirred the curtains, bringing a sense of freshness.
In a daze, Kahn opened his eyes. He slowly sat up from the bed, holding his head in his right hand, pondering his situation.
Creak!
Mode, returning with hot water, was delighted to see him awake.
“Major, you’re awake! That’s great!”
Looking at the white bandages wrapped around him and the smell of disinfectant in the air, Kahn deduced where he was.
“How long was I unconscious?”
Mode put down the kettle and replied, “Major, this is the fourth day of your coma. It’s a relief you woke up today. I was starting to worry something had happened to you.”
With Mode’s help, Kahn leaned against the wall, sitting up.
“Was everyone on the patrol ship safely brought back?”
Mode stood straight and saluted, “As you instructed, all personnel were safely returned to Loguetown. The new recruits have also completed their commissioning ceremony.”
Hearing this, Kahn relaxed and asked, “Where is Curls?”
Mode said, “Curls took leave to visit his family and will be back in three days.”
Then, smiling, Mode continued, “Congratulations, Major. Your achievements this time are immense. You might be promoted to captain.”
“Achievements, promotion to captain?”
Kahn was puzzled. While training new recruits was a duty, it wasn’t enough to leap from major to captain.
Mode explained, “Yes! Major, you single-handedly defeated the Black Cat Pirates and killed Captain Kuro. Such a great achievement deserves a significant promotion.”
Killed Captain Kuro? Defeated the Black Cat Pirates?
Kahn sensed something was off, “You found many Black Cat Pirate corpses on the patrol ship?”
Mode, puzzled, answered, “Yes, including Captain Kuro, with a bounty of 15 million Berries, and the Meowban Brothers, Sam and Buchi, with bounties of 7 million Berries each. Didn’t you defeat them, Major?”
Kahn was shocked.
After killing Ralos, he fell unconscious, leaving only the mentally exhausted Curls on the patrol ship.
All those Black Cat Pirates, including Captain Kuro, must have been defeated by Curls!
But given Curls’s condition, facing the entire Black Cat Pirates alone seemed impossible!
Kahn asked, “Who said I defeated the Black Cat Pirates and Kuro?”
Mode explained, “After we Marines fell unconscious, only Curls remained on the patrol ship.”
“And Curls told me he also fell unconscious afterward. The Black Cat Pirates and Kuro were all defeated by you, Major.”
Incredible.
Curls must have fought fiercely to protect him and the Marines after he fell unconscious.
But why did Curls persist through the night instead of waking him?
And why did Curls give him credit?
Kahn was confused.
“Are you sure Curls said that?”
Mode confidently replied, “Yes. I reported it to Captain Smoker. With such a great achievement, you might even be transferred to Marine Headquarters, Major.”
Marine Headquarters?
Kahn turned to look out the window at some green plants, where a mantis was hopping around.
If the mantis remained still, it would be almost impossible to spot at a glance.
But for certain purposes, the mantis would move because it couldn’t stay in one place forever.
After a moment of silence, Kahn nodded, “I understand. I did defeat the Black Cat Pirates and Captain Kuro. Inform Captain Smoker that I want to request a transfer to Marine Headquarters.”
“Great, Major! I’ll report to Captain Smoker right away!”
Mode was overjoyed. Major Kahn had always stayed out of the limelight at Loguetown Marine Base, often having his achievements overshadowed.
In Mode’s heart, it was a regret that such a great Marine was buried in the ordinary East Blue.
Now that Major Kahn decided to go to Marine Headquarters, Mode couldn’t be more excited.
After Mode left, the room gradually quieted.
Kahn picked up the famous sword given to him by Dragon, pondering his next steps.
As a revolutionary spy planted in the Marines, Kahn had been hiding in the East Blue, aiding the revolutionaries’ activities and plans here.
But with the recent capture of revolutionary spies, they lost touch with Marine Headquarters. A few days ago, Kahn received a new mission from Dragon, the revolutionary leader.
“Infiltrate Marine Headquarters!”
The East Blue affairs would temporarily be handed over to another revolutionary manager.
Originally, Kahn had wondered how to transfer to Marine Headquarters smoothly, but Curls’s credit for defeating Captain Kuro and the Black Cat Pirates provided the perfect opportunity.
So, Kahn accepted Curls’s goodwill and took the credit.
He would now logically rise in rank and transfer to Marine Headquarters to carry out Dragon’s latest mission.

PS: Regarding Major Kahn being a revolutionary spy, I’ve foreshadowed this in earlier chapters.
Such as his background from the Isshin Dojo, his reaction to seeing revolutionary spies caught in the newspaper, and his tendency to protect the weak.
This chapter explains why a swordmaster like Kahn hid in the East Blue and why he had a [Great Grade Sword].
