- Chapter 71 - The Terrifying Butterfly Shinobu
“What a great item,” Fang Bo said, looking pleased.
Despite the headless puppet’s limited contribution, Fang Bo was starting to enjoy controlling it.
The feeling of staying far from danger while manipulating a powerful puppet to kill enemies with just a flick of his fingers was mesmerising. This could be the charm of being a summoner.
The puppet’s effectiveness would undoubtedly increase if his close combat skills improved.
“Unfortunately, there’s a slight difference between puppets and other constructs. At the very least, I can’t install any attachments on it.”
Puppets come in many forms. His current one, being flesh and blood, is suitable for a violent close-combat approach.
There are also mechanical puppets like the Yoriichi Type Zero, which, although less durable, can be equipped with various devices.
He could even mount the Dragoon on it if conditions allow, giving the mechanical puppet long-range shooting capabilities.
“Maybe I could even attach the maneuver gear, so the puppet could fly.”
Fang Bo fantasised about his future invincible puppet while applying the lubricant.
His actions resembled an older man helping someone apply sunscreen on a beach, a sight his companions found hard to watch.
“It’s done!”
Durability: 148/280
Seeing the durability restored safely, Fang Bo knew he could continue relying on the puppet in battles.
Once he returned to the Reincarnation Space… No, once he visited the Swordsmith Village, he had to learn how to repair puppets there.
Space doesn’t allow duplicate rewards, and the merit shop doesn’t sell such items currently, so he must learn to do it himself.
[Main Task: Exterminate Evil Spirits (Activated)]
[Task Description: The world is filled with countless tragedies. As a demon hunter, your mission is to eliminate evil.
[Task Requirement: Hunt at least ten evil spirits within thirty days.]
[Special Note: The quality of hunted spirits will affect the task rewards!]
The main task for the second chapter had begun. As expected, space required them to hunt as many demons as possible.
Hunting is necessary, but killing ordinary demons differs significantly from slaying the Twelve Kizuki.
Moreover, the latter is likely to trigger hidden tasks, providing substantial benefits for power enhancement.
“Complete several hidden tasks, enhance our strength, and dealing with enemies will become easier.”
As for specific targets, isn’t it obvious? The top priority is the Mugen Train arc.
With the help of two teammates and Flame Hashira Rengoku Kyojuro’s strength… Well, defeating Akaza still seems daunting. Eliminating Upper Moon Three would require at least two Hashira joining forces.
And they must avoid alerting the enemy, following the plot’s original flow to some extent.
Otherwise, Akaza isn’t foolish enough to appear if he sees nine Hashira gathered.
“Summon one Hashira, depending on who’s available and willing.”
The second chapter’s task duration is ample, giving Fang Bo enough time to explore.
After dealing with the Mugen Train, he could visit the Red Light District, known for its young and beautiful courtesans and a hidden Upper Moon Six.
Unlike the other two tasks, the siblings won’t leave the district. They’ll always be there whenever he goes.
Comparatively, Gyutaro and his sister are much weaker than Akaza, so he might have to visit the district alone.
He could bring along some story protagonists if necessary, as long as other reincarnators don’t snatch the plot chest.
Lost in thought, Fang Bo didn’t notice the figure descending from above.
“Moshi Moshi~”
A girl with curly hair descended gracefully, her white hair spreading like butterfly wings.
With purple eyes observing him, Butterfly Shinobu mused, “Poor thing, so young and poisoned mute by those spiders.”
“…Do you need something?” Fang Bo replied coolly, not underestimating the girl because of her appearance.
One of the Nine Hashira, the Insect Hashira, had poisons that were deadly weapons. Despite her low frontal combat strength, her deadliness rivals many top-tier fighters.
He’d rather not provoke this pretty girl, even if he’s willing to face Flame or Sound Hashira.
“Oh, you can speak. What a pity.” Shinobu smiled warmly, her words making Fang Bo’s companions take a step back. “I wanted to test some drugs on you, but I guess I’ll find other subjects.”
She then instructed members of the Butterfly Estate to care for the three of them.
After all, they had killed an Upper Moon, and her experimentation was just a scare tactic. Shinobu wouldn’t easily harm her allies.
But angering her could lead to unpredictable consequences.
“Her name’s in the intel. She’s indeed terrifying,” Darren said, indicating Shinobu’s fearsome reputation among reincarnators.
With the arrival of Demon Slayer Corps members, the Spider Mountain incident concluded, and they headed to the Butterfly Estate to rest.
Having signed the contract, the other two had no intention of leaving.
They all understood that ordinary demons weren’t worth their attention. The target was the remaining Twelve Kizuki.
Finding them by chance was unlikely, even in ten years.
The best approach was heading to the Demon Slayer Corps headquarters, close to the Butterfly Estate, to check for tasks.
As they reached the mountain base, they encountered the main characters: Tanjiro and his sister, Inosuke, and Zenitsu.
“What? The mission’s over? No chance for me to shine!”
“Phew, that’s great, Tanjiro. We don’t have to face enemies.”
Seeing the group chatting, Fang Bo didn’t interfere.
Knowing the main characters isn’t particularly useful.
Understanding their past to gain unexpected benefits is the right approach.
To Fang Bo, Tanjiro wasn’t of much value.
Tanjiro’s uniqueness lies in two aspects: his rational demon sister Nezuko and the Breath of the Sun inherited from Yoriichi.
He could find substitutes for Nezuko, and even if he asked for the Breath of the Sun, Tanjiro might not give it.
Unless he offers something significant in return, like helping Nezuko become human or killing Muzan.
Those considerations are for later. Now, he needed a break.
With Jorogumo returning to the Onmyoji world, Fang Bo could recover his mental energy.
Though physically fine, his mind was at its limit, needing rest to avoid potential health issues.
They boarded the Butterfly Estate’s carriage, and the exhausted trio quickly fell asleep.
Sometime later, Fang Bo, with his solid mental energy, woke first.
Seeing the others still asleep, he quietly left the carriage and smiled at the waiting Demon Slayer Corps members.
“Where’s Butterfly Shinobu?”
Hearing this, the masked female member frowned, seemingly annoyed by his nonchalance, but pointed the way.
In the front carriage, Shinobu experimented with some drugs on captured spider demons.
The screams from inside hinted at the ongoing process.
When Fang Bo lifted the curtain, he saw a spider demon in despair.
Its pitiful state left him wondering what it had endured.
“You’re awake.” Shinobu greeted, gently stroking the spider demon’s head, excitement in her eyes. “I found many interesting things on the mountain.”
Seeing her eager to chat, Fang Bo stayed silent, curious about her findings.
She presented a small bottle like a treasure, “Do you know this toxin inhibits cell division?”
“Oh.”
“Inject it into demons, and it prevents regeneration, making battles easier.”
“I see.”
Seeing his indifference, Shinobu smiled, gripping her sword, and leaned in, “Jason, where did this toxin come from?”
Feeling the implied threat, Fang Bo sighed, “Yes, it’s related to me.”
“I see.”
Staring at her drawn sword, he reluctantly nodded, “If you need help, I’m willing.”
“Your words are strange, but thank you.”
With that, space announced a task trigger.
[Task 14552: Butterfly Shinobu’s Request.]
[Task Description: Jorogumo’s toxin intrigued a researcher who believes it can aid the Demon Slayer Corps.]
[Task Requirement: Help Shinobu develop a new drug.]
For the task, he’d overlook her threat.
Seeing her turn back to experimenting, Fang Bo was about to state his purpose when he noticed something outside.
A man with a cold gaze was watching him.
Before the figure fully appeared, Fang Bo hadn’t sensed him. But he recognised the man’s true identity.
Another reincarnator.
“I knew it, we weren’t the only survivors.”
Sensing his gaze, Shinobu smiled, “I found something interesting on the mountain.”
“Besides the toxin, the most interesting was this person.”
“When I saw him, he was dissecting a spider demon.”
