Reborn with Steve Stand - Chapter 64
When Fang Mo’s words reached Nick Fury’s ears, he nearly spat out the milk he was drinking.
“Looks like they’re not together,” observed Dr. Banner, glancing at Tony. “Our sorcerer friend doesn’t seem too thrilled about it either, I suppose.”
“I think he just doesn’t care,” replied Tony Stark.
“Tony, Bruce, there might be some misunderstandings here,” Nick Fury said, rubbing his temples with a headache. Feeling betrayed by Fang Mo, he continued, “You should know Fang Mo’s personality. He even makes jokes about Nazis, so it’s better not to take his words too seriously…”
“Is that so?” Tony raised an eyebrow.
Suddenly, Captain America burst into the room, slamming an energy weapon on the table with a loud noise. He exclaimed, “Explain how this thing works.”
“Captain, I didn’t authorize access to the arsenal…” Nick Fury responded immediately.
“Someone suggested it to me,” Captain America calmly explained. “Guess being an old-fashioned soldier isn’t popular anymore.”
“Thanks to the Captain, we now have solid evidence,” Tony stood up slowly from his chair. “So, Director Red Skull, care to explain anything else?”
“Please don’t compare me to a Nazi war criminal,” Nick Fury pleaded.
“But what you’ve done isn’t any different,” Captain America said directly. “I thought the world was changing for the better when I saw what was broadcasted on TV, but now it seems… nothing has changed.”
“Misinformation is a real problem,” added Fang Mo casually.
“What’s going on?” Thor and Natasha entered the room quickly, likely drawn by the argument.
“SHIELD is using the Tesseract to develop weapons of mass destruction,” Dr. Banner confronted Natasha. “Agent Natasha, I assume you know about this, right?”
“Let’s not argue about it, Bruce. We need to stay calm,” Natasha calmly advised. “I don’t have all the information, but fighting among ourselves won’t help.”
“Of course, I’ll try to stay calm,” Dr. Banner said. “But right now, I need some answers.”
“Oh, and so do I,” Tony chimed in. “I’d really like to know if SHIELD would have continued studying the Tesseract and building spaceships if this incident hadn’t happened.”
“They’ve already been working on it,” Fang Mo interjected, seemingly unconcerned about the seriousness of the situation. “Project PEGASUS involves studying spacecraft powered by the Tesseract’s energy. They even brought aliens into the experiment…”
“MotherFucker! Can you please keep quiet for a moment?” Nick Fury, feeling his head about to explode, quickly said to Fang Mo.
“Did he say something wrong?” Dr. Banner couldn’t help but ask. “I can’t believe what you’ve done. Maybe you’re even more involved with the Tesseract than Red Skull?”
“Let’s stop mentioning Red Skull,” Nick Fury took a deep breath and requested. “Okay, let’s continue talking about the Tesseract.”
…
Nick Fury paused for a moment and then suddenly pointed at Thor beside him. “Okay, I admit, it’s all because of him.”
“Huh?”
Thor, who was observing the situation, was taken aback. How did he end up being blamed?
“We recently had an alien visitor,” Nick Fury continued, ignoring Thor’s confusion. “Thanks to our ‘Advisor’ Fang Mo’s help, we prevented a disaster when that strange armor attacked the town. It made me realize that humans are not alone…”
“Wait, let me interrupt you.”
Tony said, “According to Fang Mo, you’ve been researching energy weapons long before…”
“We encountered aliens during the PEGASUS Project,” Nick Fury said sternly. “They’re called the Kree, an alien race with advanced technology capable of destroying Earth. I must find a way to bridge this gap.”
“It was your experiments with the Tesseract that caught the attention of the aliens.”
Hearing this, Thor couldn’t help but speak up, “I asked the alien named Gamora about it. According to her, your experiments activated the Tesseract’s energy frequency, sending signals throughout the universe, as if inviting other civilizations to wage war with Earth.”
“What can we do about it?”
Nick Fury countered, “The alien threat is imminent. We can’t just sit and wait. We have to find a way to deal with it…”
“Like nuclear deterrence?” Tony sneered. “I should have known. This isn’t the first time you’ve done something like this.”
“Do I need to remind you of what Stark Industries used to do?” Nick Fury turned to Tony.
Amidst the rising tension and mutual distrust among the team members, a scene similar to the original story unfolded. Everyone felt dissatisfied, and in the midst of an impending alien invasion, these grievances grew into restlessness and anxiety, leading to blame being placed on each other.
Meanwhile, Fang Mo enjoyed the spectacle.
As accusations and revelations of untold secrets unfolded, such as Tony’s childhood antics or Banner’s heart-wrenching love story with Betty, a fighter jet suddenly appeared and approached the Helicarrier.
In the next moment, a massive explosion rocked the cabin, engulfing it in flames. Glass shattered, and the shockwave sent everyone flying.
The Helicarrier was under attack, alarms blaring, and the entire crew on high alert.
Thor, being the most physically capable, quickly reacted. Realizing they were being invaded, he rushed towards the glass cell to prevent the enemy from rescuing the hostages.
Tony and Captain America swiftly understood the situation and prepared to retrieve their weapons, the shield and the armor suit, respectively.
Natasha and Dr. Banner, on the other hand, fell into the equipment compartment below the lab. Natasha intended to inform Nick Fury of their safety through her earpiece, but when she turned around, she saw Dr. Banner’s muscles bulging and a terrifying green hue spreading across his body.
Witnessing Dr. Banner’s transformation, Natasha’s heart skipped a beat.
Soon, Banner fully transformed into the Hulk, roaring in anger and demolishing everything around him. However, after smashing a few objects, he suddenly seemed to sense something and locked his gaze on Natasha.
But before Natasha could react, a figure descended from the gaping hole above.
“Well, well, isn’t this Hulk?”
